There is no universal winner. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is usually the better fit if you want Apple-directed service, Apple’s published incident fees, and a stated limit of two lost or stolen iPhone replacements per year. Carrier insurance can be the better value when its quote for your exact iPhone and state is materially cheaper, when you want the premium billed with your wireless account, or when the carrier’s repair and replacement network is more convenient.

The right comparison is your total expected cost—not the monthly premium alone. Add the premium to the service fee or deductible you would pay for the type and number of claims you realistically expect. Prices, deductibles, enrollment rules, state forms, and replacement inventory can change, so verify the live quote before enrolling. The figures below were checked against Apple, Verizon, and AT&T materials available in 2026.

What each type of protection actually is

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss combines two different products. Apple describes AppleCare+ as a service contract covering hardware, technical support, battery depletion, and accidental damage from handling. The Theft and Loss portion is an insurance policy for a lost or stolen iPhone. That distinction matters because a service fee applies to covered accidental damage, while a separate deductible applies when the phone is lost or stolen.

Carrier offerings are insurance or protection bundles administered through the carrier and its claims partners. The exact benefits depend on the carrier, device tier, state, and plan. A bundled plan may include accidental-damage repair, loss and theft protection, an extended warranty, security software, or technical support. Read the plan for your model rather than assuming that every phone on the same carrier has identical terms.

Published prices and limits at a glance

Plan Published recurring charge Damage service fee or deductible Loss/theft terms Replacement standard or notes
AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss Premium varies by iPhone model and payment option; the Apple materials cited here do not provide one universal price. $29 for each screen or back-glass accidental-damage incident; $99 for other accidental damage. $149 deductible for a theft or loss claim; up to two lost or stolen iPhone replacements every 12 months. Apple service and support channel; confirm the current replacement details for your model and region.
Verizon Wireless Phone Protection $4.95 or $7.95 per month nationwide. New York prices are $4.25, $5.25, or $8.25 per month. Deductible varies by device and plan; the cited Verizon materials do not state one amount that applies to every iPhone. Includes loss, theft, damage, and water damage; claim rules and deductibles depend on the enrolled device and option. Verizon also offers Mobile Protect, which combines Wireless Phone Protection, Verizon Extended Warranty, and Mobile Secure. A deductible is charged in addition to the monthly fee.
AT&T Protect Advantage $16 per month for device tiers 1–2; $19 for tiers 3–4; $25 for tiers 5–6. Terms effective October 20, 2025. Replacement deductibles of $25, $100, $225, $275, $300, or $400, depending on device tier. Eligible repairs can have a $0 service fee. Unlimited claims, with each claim limited to $3,500. Approved replacements may be new or AT&T Certified Restored equipment, including previously opened, used, refurbished, or remanufactured devices and potentially non-original replacement parts.

These are published figures, not a quote for every customer. Your iPhone model, storage capacity, state, enrollment date, and selected option can change the amount you pay.

How to compare the total cost

Use a simple claim-cost calculation before choosing. For each plan, estimate the premium over the period you expect to keep the phone, then add the fee or deductible for the incidents you consider plausible. Compare the result with the cost of replacing the phone without insurance.

  1. Identify the exact device. Record the iPhone generation, storage tier, and whether it is new, upgraded, or a replacement. Carrier plans assign device tiers, and Apple’s pricing varies by model.
  2. Check the location. State rules can change premiums and forms. Verizon, for example, publishes a different monthly price schedule for New York.
  3. List likely incidents. Separate screen or back-glass damage, other accidental damage, loss, and theft. A plan that is inexpensive for a cracked screen may be less attractive if theft is your main concern.
  4. Apply the plan’s fee to each incident. Apple publishes separate charges for screen/back-glass damage, other damage, and theft or loss. Carrier deductibles can differ by device tier and claim type.
  5. Include claim frequency limits. Apple states a maximum of two lost or stolen iPhone replacements per year. AT&T states that claims are unlimited, subject to a $3,500 limit per claim. Other limits may apply to a carrier option.
  6. Account for uncovered events. Exclusions, ineligible devices, and missed enrollment windows can make the premium provide no benefit for a particular incident.

Do not compare Apple’s incident fees with a carrier’s monthly charge as if they were the same thing. The premium buys eligibility for the benefit; the fee or deductible is paid only when an approved claim or service event occurs.

Damage protection: where the economics differ

Screen and back-glass damage

Apple’s published $29 fee applies to each covered screen or back-glass accidental-damage incident. That transparent, model-independent figure in Apple’s product information is useful if your main risk is a cracked display or rear glass. You still need to confirm that the damage meets the plan’s accidental-damage definition and that the device has no disqualifying condition.

Carrier plans may repair an eligible device or replace it, but the applicable deductible depends on the carrier’s device tier and option. AT&T lists a $0 service fee for eligible repairs, while replacement deductibles vary by tier. Verizon states that its deductible depends on the device and plan. Ask whether a repair is available for your exact model, whether a deductible applies to that repair, and whether the claim is fulfilled by a local facility or shipped to you.

Other accidental damage and water exposure

Apple lists a $99 service fee for other accidental damage. Apple’s disclosure also identifies accidental damage from handling as a covered benefit, subject to exclusions and the plan’s terms.

Verizon Wireless Phone Protection expressly includes water damage in its covered damage categories. That does not mean every liquid incident is automatically approved; the device must satisfy the policy’s conditions and any inspection requirements. AT&T’s repair-versus-replacement decision and deductible depend on the device tier and claim determination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery service and ordinary wear

Apple includes battery depletion in the AppleCare+ service-contract benefits. The disclosure does not make every reduction in battery capacity a free replacement, so check the current battery-service conditions for your iPhone before relying on that benefit.

Normal wear and tear and cosmetic damage are among Apple’s stated exclusions. A scratch that does not impair function, an aging finish, or damage caused intentionally is not the same as accidental damage from handling. Carrier policies have their own exclusions and inspection standards; do not assume that a cosmetic issue qualifies merely because the phone is enrolled.

Theft and loss: deductibles, limits, and practical differences

Apple’s Theft and Loss option has a published $149 deductible for an approved theft or loss claim and allows up to two lost or stolen iPhone replacements every year. The annual limit is important for people who frequently misplace devices, travel often, or carry a phone in environments where theft is a realistic risk.

Verizon Wireless Phone Protection includes loss and theft, but the deductible is device- and plan-specific. The monthly premium alone cannot tell you whether a Verizon claim will cost less than an Apple claim. Request the deductible shown for your exact iPhone before enrolling.

AT&T Protect Advantage states that claims are unlimited, with each claim limited to $3,500. Its replacement deductible is tied to the device tier and can range from $25 to $400. “Unlimited” does not remove the need to meet the policy’s conditions, pay the applicable deductible, or stay within the per-claim dollar limit.

For any loss or theft claim, keep your purchase or upgrade records and follow the plan’s security and reporting instructions promptly. A claim can be denied if the device is not eligible, the required account information is missing, or an exclusion applies. The plan documents—not a sales summary—control the outcome.

Repair and replacement experience

Apple-directed service

AppleCare+ is the clearer choice when you want Apple as the primary service channel. You can start with Apple support and use Apple-authorized service options for covered damage. That can simplify diagnosis, parts matching, and technical support for people who prefer to deal with the phone maker rather than a carrier claims administrator.

The convenience has a trade-off: AppleCare+ premiums are model-specific, and the service contract and insurance terms must both be satisfied. Confirm the current plan price, payment schedule, service availability in your area, and the conditions for a theft or loss replacement.

Carrier fulfillment

Carrier insurance can be convenient when the premium is billed with your wireless account or when the carrier has a nearby repair network. Verizon’s Mobile Protect bundle adds an extended warranty and Mobile Secure to Wireless Phone Protection, so it may provide benefits beyond a standalone damage policy.

AT&T states that, after an approved claim, a replacement may arrive as soon as the next day. The replacement may be new or AT&T Certified Restored equipment, including previously opened, used, refurbished, or remanufactured devices, and it may contain non-original replacement parts. If receiving a phone that is not factory-new matters to you, treat that language as a major decision point rather than an afterthought.

Carrier replacement inventory can change. Ask whether the replacement will be the same color and storage capacity, whether accessories are included, and what warranty applies to the replacement. The plan may provide an equivalent model instead of the exact retail configuration.

Eligibility, enrollment, and cancellation

Apple enrollment questions

Apple’s enrollment availability depends on the purchase channel, device condition, and the option offered for your iPhone. The Apple materials summarized here do not establish one enrollment window that applies to every model and country. Check the offer shown for your device while it is eligible, and do not wait until after damage occurs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask whether you are buying a monthly plan or a fixed term, how cancellation affects future eligibility, and whether Theft and Loss is included in the option you selected. AppleCare+ without Theft and Loss does not provide the same lost-or-stolen benefit.

AT&T enrollment

AT&T generally permits enrollment within 30 days of activation or upgrade, or during an open-enrollment period, subject to device eligibility. A phone outside the allowed window may not be added simply because it is in good condition. Check the date of activation or upgrade and the enrollment notice on your account.

Verizon enrollment and cancellation

Verizon’s eligibility depends on the selected protection option and the device’s status. Verizon warns that canceling Wireless Phone Protection can affect eligibility for another protection option unless the device meets that option’s separate requirements. Before canceling, ask what replacement coverage, if any, remains available and whether a new inspection or enrollment window would apply.

Changing carriers

Do not assume that a carrier-billed plan follows the phone automatically when you move the line to another network. Confirm whether coverage ends when the carrier account closes, whether a final premium is charged, and how an open claim is handled. AppleCare+ is a separate Apple service contract and insurance benefit, but the transfer, cancellation, and regional rules still need to be confirmed for your specific agreement.

Exclusions that can defeat an otherwise good plan

Apple’s disclosure lists normal wear and tear, cosmetic damage, reckless or intentional acts, unauthorized parts or service, and pre-existing defects among its exclusions. Similar exclusions are common in carrier policies, although the wording and inspection process differ.

  • Pre-existing damage: Enrolling after a crack, liquid event, or malfunction does not turn that event into a covered claim.
  • Unauthorized repairs: Third-party parts or service can affect eligibility under Apple’s terms and may complicate a carrier inspection.
  • Intentional or reckless damage: A deliberate act is not the same as accidental handling.
  • Cosmetic-only issues: Scratches, dents, or finish wear may be excluded when the phone still works normally.
  • Missing documentation or security steps: Claims commonly require account verification, proof of ownership, and compliance with instructions for a lost device.

Read the exclusions before paying the first premium. A lower monthly price is not a bargain if the event you fear is excluded.

Which plan fits common iPhone owners?

Choose AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss when:

  • You want Apple-directed technical support and authorized service.
  • Your main concern is accidental damage and you value the published $29 screen/back-glass and $99 other-damage fees.
  • You want a clearly stated allowance of up to two lost or stolen iPhone replacements per year.
  • You prefer Apple to manage the service relationship rather than a carrier claims administrator.

Choose carrier insurance when:

  • The quote for your exact iPhone and state is materially cheaper after adding the likely deductible.
  • You want the premium consolidated on your wireless bill.
  • Your carrier offers a repair location, replacement speed, security package, or extended-warranty benefit that you will actually use.
  • You need a claim structure that fits your risk, such as AT&T’s stated unlimited claims with a $3,500 limit per claim.

Consider declining both when:

  • You can comfortably replace the phone and are unlikely to file a claim.
  • The premium plus probable deductible approaches the cost of self-insuring over the time you will keep the device.
  • You are outside an enrollment window or the phone already has damage that would be excluded.

Declining coverage is a financial choice, not proof that the phone is low risk. Set aside the amount you would otherwise spend on premiums if you choose to self-insure.

A decision checklist before you enroll

  1. Write down the iPhone model, storage capacity, purchase or upgrade date, and current condition.
  2. Get the live AppleCare+ quote and the live carrier quotes for your state. Save the fee schedule shown for your device.
  3. Ask for the deductible for screen damage, other damage, and theft or loss—not just the monthly premium.
  4. Confirm the number of claims allowed, any annual or per-claim dollar limit, and whether repairs count differently from replacements.
  5. Ask whether a replacement can be refurbished, remanufactured, or fitted with non-original parts.
  6. Check the enrollment deadline and what happens if you cancel or change carriers.
  7. Read exclusions for cosmetic damage, unauthorized service, pre-existing defects, and reckless or intentional acts.
  8. Keep the policy certificate, receipt, device serial number, and claim contact details where you can access them if the phone is lost.

Preventing the claim is cheaper than choosing between claims

A case and an exact-model tempered-glass screen protector can reduce the chance of a cracked display, which is one of the most common covered incidents. Verify compatibility with your iPhone’s precise screen size, camera cutout, and case before buying. A protector is prevention, not insurance: it does not replace theft, loss, water, or other-damage coverage, and it cannot guarantee that the underlying glass will survive a drop.

Bottom line: compare your quote, not a headline price

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is the more predictable choice for Apple-centric service, published incident fees, and a stated two-replacements-per-year theft/loss limit. Verizon or AT&T can win when the carrier’s model- and state-specific quote is lower, billing convenience matters, or the carrier’s repair and replacement benefits fit your habits better. Because premiums, deductibles, tiers, inventory, and state rules vary, the only defensible final decision is the one made from current quotes for your exact iPhone and location.
