Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines are best treated as product requirements, not a last-minute upload checklist. They connect safety, privacy, performance, truthful presentation, payments and review access—and they apply to the entire app experience, including third-party SDKs and services. Reading them can help you catch avoidable problems, but it cannot predict or guarantee an approval decision.
What the App Store Review Guidelines are meant to do
Apple describes the App Store as a curated marketplace intended to provide users with a safe experience and developers with an opportunity to succeed. It says it reviews submissions and scans for malware or software that could affect safety, security or privacy. The App Store Review Guidelines set out the expectations developers must meet.
The guidelines are not a fixed checklist that covers every possible product design. Apple calls them a living document and notes that new apps can raise questions that lead to new rules. Read the current version when planning a feature and again before submission.

What I learned: review readiness starts with product design
Compliance includes services and code you did not write
Apple places responsibility on the developer for the app as a whole, including ad networks, analytics services and third-party SDKs. A compliant screen or first-party codebase is not enough if an integrated service collects data improperly, exposes users to unsafe content or otherwise conflicts with the rules. Review the behavior and data practices of every dependency you ship.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Privacy and safety have to work in the product
Privacy obligations are operational: disclosures, consent flows and actual data practices need to align. For apps with user-generated content, Apple specifies safeguards that include filtering objectionable material, a way to report content and timely responses, the ability to block abusive users, and published contact information. Apple also says certain apps built primarily around random or anonymous chat do not belong on the App Store.
Apps in the Kids Category face additional constraints, including rules around links, purchases and distractions outside a parental-gated area, as well as privacy-related requirements. A general-audience design should not be assumed to satisfy those additional conditions.

Functionality and presentation must match what users are promised
Apple expects developers to test for crashes and bugs, use public APIs and provide more than minimal functionality. The app must also perform as advertised; misleading presentation, impersonation and hidden or undocumented features can create review problems. Test the actual user journey, not just whether the app launches.
Payment rules depend on the applicable terms
The guidelines address in-app purchases and subscriptions, but a single payment rule should not be generalized across all storefronts. Applicable provisions can depend on geography, storefront, eligibility and program terms. Apple’s current guidelines refer to regional terms and addenda, including an addendum for certain EU alternative distribution and payment options. Check the current rules that apply to your app and market rather than relying on a summary written for another region.

How to prepare an app for App Review
Apple’s “Before You Submit” checklist translates the broader policy into practical submission work. Use it alongside the full guidelines, not instead of them.
- Test the app: Look for crashes, bugs and broken or incomplete flows. Test hardware-dependent behavior on suitable devices; Apple says developers can use Xcode to install an app on a device.
- Make the listing accurate and complete: Ensure the app’s metadata describes its real features and behavior, and keep developer contact details current.
- Make the app reviewable: Provide access, credentials or hardware needed to assess the app. Keep backend services available during review.
- Explain anything that is not obvious: Use review notes to describe unusual features, workflows or purchases so the reviewer can find and understand them.
- Check the whole stack: Revisit privacy practices, content safeguards, SDKs, analytics, advertising and other third-party services against the current requirements.
These preparations reduce avoidable friction; they do not remove the need to comply with every applicable rule. Apple states: “This doesn’t replace the guidelines or guarantee approval, but making sure you can tick every item on the list is a good start.”

What Apple’s review figures do—and don’t—show
In its 2026 report, Apple said it evaluated more than 9.1 million app submissions in 2025. It reported rejecting more than 2 million for failing to adhere to the guidelines, including more than 443,000 for privacy violations and more than 22,000 for hidden or undocumented features. These are Apple’s reported totals, not an independent audit. They show the kinds of issues Apple says it encounters at scale; they do not establish an individual developer’s odds of rejection.
Check what changed before you rely on an old summary
Apple’s June 8, 2026 developer announcement says the Apple Developer Program License Agreement and App Review Guidelines were revised to support features, update policies and clarify requirements. The announcement lists agreement changes, including specified requirements concerning developer identity and use of named frameworks and APIs; it does not say that every guideline changed on that date. For a specific rule, consult the live guideline text and distinguish it from changes to the developer agreement.

The practical lesson is to treat review readiness as continuing product work. The guidelines help identify responsibilities across the app, its data practices, its dependencies and its submission materials, while Apple’s current rules and the details of a particular app determine what applies.
