If you’re creating an Apple Account in the App Store, choose None when the payment-method option appears. For an existing account, check Settings > [your name] > Payment & Shipping to review saved methods. Neither step overrides an unpaid bill or every account condition: first check whether the alert says “billing problem with a previous purchase” or “verification required.”
First, identify what the App Store is asking you to do
A request to add billing details can have different causes. The right fix depends on whether you’re creating an account, managing an existing account, responding to an unpaid order, or using Family Sharing.

Creating a new Apple Account: choose None if it appears
When you create an Apple Account through the App Store, follow the on-screen flow and select None at the payment-method step if that option is available. Apple says you won’t be charged until you make a purchase. The option and flow can vary by device and availability; Apple’s guide documents the supported process at Create an Apple Account.

- On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
- Tap [your name], then Payment & Shipping.
- Review the payment methods listed. If the account allows it, remove a method you no longer want to use, or update an expired or incorrect method.
Apple’s instructions explain how to add or update payment methods, but don’t establish that every account can be left without one. An unpaid order or other account circumstances may require a valid payment method. See Apple’s payment-method guidance before treating removal as a permanent way to prevent future prompts.

“Billing problem” or “verification required”: settle the unpaid order
These alerts are different from a routine request to enter payment information. Apple says they mean a previous purchase could not be charged and there is an unpaid balance. Until it’s paid, you may be unable to make purchases, download free apps, or use subscriptions. Apple’s steps are in If you see a billing problem with a previous purchase.
- Open your Apple Account’s Purchase History and look for an order marked Amount You Owe.
- Retry the current payment method, or add a valid method and pay the outstanding order.
- If available in your country or region, redeem an Apple Gift Card or App Store Card, add its credit to your Apple Account, then apply that credit to the unpaid order.
A gift card is a possible way to pay a confirmed unpaid order where supported; buying or redeeming one does not generally turn off billing prompts. Apple says gift-card availability varies by country or region. If you can’t resolve the balance, contact Apple Support.

Family Sharing: check who is responsible for the charge
When Purchase Sharing is on, the family organizer’s payment method is generally charged for family purchases unless the purchasing member has a valid payment method. If you aren’t the organizer, ask them to check the payment method or the specific unpaid order. Details are in Apple’s Family Sharing purchase guidance.
Turning off Purchase Sharing changes how family members share individual purchases; it isn’t simply a billing-prompt setting. Review the effects in Apple’s guidance before changing it.

If a payment method is required, check region and billing details
- Country or region: Confirm that the payment method is accepted for the country or region on your Apple Account. Don’t change the account region merely to bypass a prompt; the method must correspond to that region. See Apple’s payment-method guidance.
- Name and billing address: Enter details that match the records held by your bank or other financial institution. Apple’s payment-method instructions call out matching billing details.
- Issuer verification: Some payment methods require verification by the bank or issuer. If that check fails, contact the financial institution; Apple’s unpaid-balance guidance and payment-method guidance direct users to the relevant support route.
When to contact Apple or your financial institution
Contact Apple Support if an unpaid order remains unresolved or you can’t pay it through the available options. Contact your financial institution if the method is accepted for your account’s region but issuer verification keeps failing. If there is no unpaid order and you still can’t manage the method shown under Payment & Shipping, Apple Support can advise what applies to your account.
