NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day for October 16, 2026, presents a composite night-sky photograph from Lauffen, Germany, in which the International Space Station (ISS) and Space Shuttle Discovery cross the evening sky on apparently diverging tracks. The bright trail on the right is the ISS; the other prominent trail is Discovery, photographed shortly after the shuttle launched on mission STS-124.
The tracks do not actually bend away from one another. Their apparent separation is a perspective effect called parallax: the two spacecraft were at substantially different altitudes and therefore changed position against the background sky differently from the photographer’s viewpoint.
What the “Chasing the ISS” APOD shows
Jürgen Michelberger photographed two spacecraft passing over Lauffen after Discovery’s STS-124 launch. Discovery was traveling toward an orbital rendezvous with the ISS. The image combines two long exposures into one composite, allowing both vehicles’ movement to appear as bright lines across the twilight sky.

NASA/APOD identifies the trail at the right as the ISS and the trail near the center as Discovery. The vehicles were not flying side by side at the same height, so the picture is not a literal view of two parallel tracks. It is a record of two related orbital paths projected onto one view from the ground.

Why the trails seem to diverge
Parallax from different altitudes
Parallax is the apparent shift of an object when it is viewed from a particular position rather than from directly above it. In this photograph, the ISS and Discovery were at very different distances from the camera. Even if their routes were similar in orbital terms, their projected directions across the sky could look as though they split apart. NASA describes this directly: “Parallax causes the paths of the ISS (right) and Discovery (near center) to seem to diverge as they were at very different altitudes.”
Perspective is not a change in orbital intent
Discovery’s destination was an orbital rendezvous with the ISS. The diverging lines therefore do not show the shuttle abandoning the station or the spacecraft physically veering away in the manner aircraft might. They show how two nearby-looking objects at different heights can produce different lines of sight for a ground observer.

When the two spacecraft passed over Lauffen
| Event | Timing after Discovery’s launch | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| ISS passage | About 10 minutes | The station crossed the photographer’s sky first. |
| Discovery passage | About 21 minutes | The shuttle crossed Lauffen roughly 11 minutes after the ISS passage while heading toward rendezvous operations. |
These timings are the approximate intervals reported in the NASA/APOD description associated with the 2008 image. They describe that launch-day observation, not a general schedule for seeing the ISS or a shuttle from other locations.

- Fixed camera: Michelberger mounted the camera on a tripod so the framing would remain steady during the long exposures.
- Two exposures: Each exposure lasted roughly two minutes, long enough for the spacecraft to draw continuous light trails while the sky and stars remained in the same composition.
- Composite assembly: The two exposures were combined into a single image. The composite presents both passages together rather than claiming that one exposure captured the entire sequence at once.
A stable tripod matters because even slight camera movement would blur stars and make the spacecraft trails difficult to align. The technique is useful for night-sky photography generally: keep the camera fixed, focus before starting the exposure, and combine frames only when the composition and timing are understood.

Why the ISS is visible after sunset
The ISS is visible from the ground when it reflects sunlight toward an observer. That is why the best opportunities are commonly shortly after sunset or before sunrise: the sky can be dark where you are while sunlight still reaches the station at orbital altitude. Once the station enters Earth’s shadow, it stops reflecting direct sunlight and its bright trail disappears.
The station circles Earth in about 90 minutes and completes roughly 16 orbits per day. Those figures describe its orbital period, not a promise that it will be visible on every orbit. Visibility depends on your location, the station’s pass geometry, local twilight, cloud cover and whether the station is sunlit during the pass. Use an ISS-pass predictor for your exact location and check the forecast shortly before going outside.

How to interpret similar ISS photographs
When comparing this APOD with another ISS image, separate the photographic method from the orbital story. Four details are especially important:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Subject pairing: Is the frame the ISS alone, or does it include a shuttle, launch vehicle or another spacecraft?
- Capture method: Note whether the camera was fixed on a tripod, how long each exposure lasted and whether the final picture is a composite.
- Geometry: Different spacecraft altitudes can create strong parallax and make apparently related paths diverge.
- Viewing conditions: Time after sunset, sky brightness and the photographer’s location change how bright and high the trails appear.
About the APOD date and archive record
The assignment identifies this entry as the October 16, 2026 APOD. The accessible NASA page carrying the exact “Chasing the ISS” title is dated June 4, 2008, and the October 16, 2026 page was not available in the archive record used for this article. The image’s scene, launch timings and photographic details correspond to that 2008 APOD entry; NASA’s final date-specific credit and wording for the 2026 listing should be confirmed when the 2026 page is published or restored.
