API remoting lets software request an operation from a service running in another process or on another machine. Remote procedure call (RPC) is a common model for doing this: client code invokes an operation through a local-facing interface, while RPC support carries the request to the server and returns a result or error. The call may look familiar, but it crosses a network and a separate security boundary, so failures, compatibility, and security need deliberate handling.
How does a remote procedure call work?
The Open Group describes the abstraction this way: “The RPC paradigm makes remote calls an extension of the familiar local procedure call mechanism.” In a local procedure call, the operation normally runs in the caller’s process. In RPC, the requested handler runs in another address space and security domain.
A typical RPC exchange has several parts, though the wire format, transport, binding mechanism, and generated support code vary by system:

The client uses an interface that identifies the service’s callable operations and the parameters they accept.
- Resolve and bind to the service. The client needs enough information to identify the target and communicate with it. A system may resolve a name or endpoint separately, then establish or use a binding.
- Send the call. RPC support encodes the call information and conveys it through a runtime and transport to the server.
- Run the operation. The server receives the request and processes the requested operation.
- Return a response. The server sends a result or error, which the client associates with its request.
This is a useful model, not a universal implementation recipe. Different RPC systems make different choices about interface definitions, generated code, transports, and how calls are matched to responses. The Open Group’s DCE 1.1 RPC API specification and the ONC RPC protocol specification, RFC 5531 describe particular RPC models and mechanisms.

Why interfaces and bindings matter
An RPC interface defines the operations a service offers and the parameters those operations use. Interface identity and version information can help a client and server determine whether they are compatible. A binding supplies the relationship and addressing information needed to communicate with a server; in some systems, name or endpoint resolution is a separate step.
If client and server disagree about an interface version, protocol, or parameter representation, a call may fail or be interpreted incorrectly. Compatibility therefore depends on more than whether both sides are reachable: they must also agree on how the operation is identified and what its inputs mean.
What can go wrong when the call is remote?
A local call usually runs in the caller’s local execution environment. A remote call depends on multiple components that can fail independently, including the client, server, network link, and naming or binding mechanisms. Possible problems include a crashed server, a broken communication path, failure to find or bind to the intended service, or incompatible protocols.

One especially important case is an ambiguous outcome: the server may have completed an operation, but the response may have been lost before the client received it. From the client’s perspective, a timeout alone does not establish whether the operation ran.
Retries and operation semantics
Retry behavior must account for what the operation does. If an operation is safe to repeat, retrying after a timeout may be reasonable. If it changes state or triggers an external action, an automatic retry can duplicate the effect when the first request already completed. The client and service need a policy suited to the operation, such as carefully chosen timeouts and a way to handle repeated requests safely.
RPC itself does not guarantee application-level reliability or exactly-once execution. RFC 5531 states that ONC RPC does not itself implement reliability; behavior depends on the transport and application. This is a property of that protocol specification, not a claim that every RPC framework behaves identically.

Does RPC provide security automatically?
No. A remote call crosses machine boundaries and may expose server resources, so an implementation and deployment need appropriate controls. The Open Group’s DCE RPC model describes services that can include authentication of clients and servers, authorization to access resources, and different degrees of cryptographic protection. Those capabilities do not mean they are enabled or configured in every RPC system.
Microsoft’s RPC over HTTP documentation gives one deployment-specific example: an RPC Proxy can perform authentication, validation, and access checks before forwarding requests to an RPC server. That is a Microsoft architecture, not a built-in property of RPC generally.

RPC is operation-oriented: the client asks a remote service to perform a procedure. REST is commonly described in resource-oriented terms, while SOAP is a messaging framework with its own conventions. A U.S. Department of Health and Human Services presentation groups REST, SOAP, and RPC as common API styles and describes RPC as a client request for a remote procedure; this is a broad orientation rather than a definitive taxonomy or current market survey.

When evaluating an API design, focus on the specifics that determine how it behaves:
- Interaction model: Does the client invoke named operations, or address resources and their representations?
- Interface and transport: How are operations, parameters, messages, and communication methods defined?
- Compatibility: How do clients and servers identify versions and handle changes?
- Security: Which authentication, authorization, and communication-protection controls are actually configured?
- Failure handling: What are the timeouts, retry rules, and safeguards for operations whose completion may be unclear?
There is no basis here for calling one style universally faster, safer, or simpler. Those qualities depend on the particular design and implementation.

Use the RPC model when client code requests a defined operation from a service elsewhere and a runtime carries that request and its response. It helps explain why an apparent function call has concerns that a local call does not: service discovery and binding, interface agreement, network failure, and controls across a security boundary. It does not describe every API, and choosing RPC does not by itself settle how reliable or secure a system will be.
