Use OAuth with narrow scopes when an agent acts for a person. Use a dedicated service identity—preferably with short-lived credentials or workload identity federation—for unattended jobs that access application-owned resources. Use an API key only when the target API requires it or offers a genuinely constrained key flow; keep that key on a backend, restrict it, monitor it, and rotate it.
These labels are not mutually exclusive. A service account can obtain an OAuth access token, while an API key may identify only a project or API consumer rather than the human who initiated an agent action. The right choice depends on whose data is being accessed, how long access should last, how narrowly it can be limited, and what the provider actually supports.
The fast decision: match the credential to the resource owner
Start by naming the principal the target service should see. If the agent reads or changes a person’s data, the person must authorize it. If a backend processes resources owned by your application, the backend needs its own workload identity. If an API has no suitable identity flow and explicitly requires a key, use a separate, restricted server-side key rather than placing one in the agent’s client code.
| Situation | Starting choice | Why and what to verify |
|---|---|---|
| The agent acts on an individual user’s files, mail, calendar or other private data | OAuth user-consent flow with the smallest practical scopes | The token represents user authorization. Plan for consent, refresh-token storage, expiry, revocation and any provider verification requirements. |
| An unattended backend calls resources owned by your application | Dedicated service account or equivalent workload identity | No end-user consent is required. Grant only the roles that component needs and prefer short-lived, provider-managed credentials. |
| The workload runs outside the cloud that owns the resource | Workload identity federation or another supported external-workload flow | A trusted external identity can be exchanged for a short-lived token, avoiding a downloaded private key. Availability and setup differ by provider. |
| The API specifically requires a key or exposes a suitably bounded key flow | A separate restricted API key held on your server | Apply restrictions, expiration and monitoring where available. Read the API’s current production guidance; a key is not a universal substitute for IAM or OAuth. |
| A multi-step agent has tools with different privileges | Separate identities, or broker short-lived access for each component | One broad identity lets every component do too much. Per-tool identities and temporary elevation reduce blast radius. |
There is no authoritative universal score for cost, breach rate or implementation time. The official guidance is prescriptive rather than a measured comparison, so choose from the provider’s supported flows and your threat model instead of an invented ranking.

Compare the methods on six security axes
- Identity represented: OAuth normally represents a user’s authorization; a service identity represents an application or workload; an API key often represents a project, account or API consumer.
- Permission scope: Check whether access can be limited to particular resources, operations, roles or OAuth scopes, and whether each tool receives only its own permissions.
- Lifetime and revocation: Prefer credentials that expire quickly and can be revoked independently. User consent can be withdrawn; keys and private key files require an operational replacement and revocation plan.
- Exposure and blast radius: Ask where a secret can be copied, logged or reused if the agent host is compromised. API keys and private service-account keys are bearer-like secrets.
- Auditability: Determine whether logs identify the individual user, a distinct workload, or only a shared key. Google warns that API keys can obscure end-user identity in audit records (Google Cloud API-key guidance).
- Compatibility and operations: Confirm the target API’s supported grant, consent and verification requirements, then budget for secure storage, refresh, monitoring and rotation.
API keys: useful compatibility tool, weak default identity
What a key actually proves
An API key is a secret attached to a request, commonly as a bearer credential. It usually proves that the caller possesses a key issued for a project or service; it does not, by itself, identify the end user who prompted an agent. OpenAI’s key-safety guidance says applications should not deploy keys in browsers or mobile apps and should route requests through a backend (OpenAI, Best Practices for API Key Safety). Google Cloud likewise says that for most APIs authorization keys should not be used in production and recommends moving toward IAM and short-lived service-account credentials (Google Cloud, Best practices for managing API keys).
Those are provider-specific recommendations, not a claim that every key is forbidden in every production service. Some APIs are designed around keys, and a tightly constrained key can be the compatible choice when stronger identity mechanisms are unavailable.
When a key is defensible
- The API explicitly requires a key and offers no supported OAuth or workload identity alternative.
- The key can be limited by API, operation, project, source IP, environment or quota.
- The call is made by a controlled backend, not by model-generated client code or a browser/mobile bundle.
- You can detect use, replace the key, and revoke the old one quickly.
Safe key handling
- Create a key dedicated to one workload, environment or team member where the provider supports that separation.
- Apply API, referrer, network or IP restrictions and an expiration or maximum lifetime if offered.
- Store it in a server-side secrets manager or equivalent protected configuration; never put it in prompts, source control, client code or ordinary logs.
- Send requests through a backend that enforces authorization, rate limits and input/output validation before the provider call.
- Monitor usage and alert on unusual geography, volume, method or error patterns.
- Rotate by creating a replacement, deploying it, verifying traffic, then revoking the old key; document the emergency-revocation owner and procedure.
OpenAI documents project-key expiration, organization or project maximum lifetimes and IP allowlisting, but exact controls depend on the account and service (OpenAI key-safety guidance).

A narrow Google exception
Google’s documentation says Gemini API authorization keys may be used in production because that API does not create resources in Google Cloud projects, and says the associated service account should have no IAM roles. That is a documented Gemini exception, not permission to generalize key-based production access to other Google APIs (Google Cloud API-key best practices).
OAuth: the correct starting point for user-owned data
What the flow provides
OAuth lets an application request an access token after the user authorizes specified scopes. The agent then calls the service with that token, and the service can enforce the granted scopes. A refresh token may obtain later access tokens without asking the person to approve every call, but refresh tokens can expire because of user actions or provider policy (Google, Using OAuth 2.0 to Access Google APIs).
Use the provider’s supported flow for the application type and request only the operations the agent needs. A read-only calendar scope is materially safer than a scope that can delete events; separate read and write tools when the product does not need both.

Implementation sequence
- Register the application with the provider and configure exact redirect URIs, environments and verification details.
- Build the authorization-code flow with a maintained OAuth library. For desktop authorization-code flows, use PKCE as recommended by Google’s OAuth guidance (Google, OAuth 2.0 Best Practices).
- Display the requested scopes and explain what the agent will do before redirecting the user to consent.
- Exchange the authorization code on your backend, not in an untrusted client, and validate state and redirect handling.
- Encrypt access and refresh tokens at rest, restrict datastore access and separate tokens by user and tenant.
- Attach the access token only to the specific tool call that needs it. Never expose it to the model prompt or return it in tool output.
- Handle access-token expiry by refreshing when permitted; if refresh fails, pause the action and ask the user to authorize again.
- Revoke tokens when the integration is disconnected, when a user requests deletion, or when compromise is suspected.
Google’s best-practice material also advises secure storage, avoiding plaintext transmission, revocation when tokens are no longer needed and encryption at rest for systems holding tokens for many users (Google OAuth 2.0 Best Practices).

OAuth is not the same as login
OAuth answers “may this application access these resources?” It is not, by itself, proof of a person’s identity for signing them into your product. Use the provider’s documented identity mechanism when you need authentication, and keep authorization scopes tied to the agent’s tools.
Service accounts and workload identity for unattended agents
Service accounts are application principals
A service account is an identity for a workload rather than an individual. In Google’s server-to-server model, the application requests an OAuth access token as the service account and calls APIs without direct user involvement (Google, Using OAuth 2.0 for Server to Server Applications). That is why “OAuth or service account?” is often a false choice: the service account can be the principal and OAuth can be the token protocol.

Prefer managed or federated credentials
Use an attached runtime identity, service-account impersonation, workload identity federation or another platform-managed mechanism that issues short-lived credentials when supported. Google Cloud’s authentication overview and service-account guidance describe these approaches and warn against unnecessary downloadable private keys (Google Cloud, Authentication for Google Cloud APIs and services; Google Cloud, Best practices for using service accounts securely).
Federation is especially valuable when the agent runs outside the resource-owning cloud: a trusted external workload identity is exchanged for a temporary token instead of distributing a persistent private key. Provider support, trust configuration and token lifetimes vary, so verify the exact integration before deployment.

Scope each workload
- Create separate service identities for ingestion, retrieval, action execution and administration when their permissions differ.
- Grant the minimum roles on the minimum resources; do not attach a broad default identity merely for convenience.
- Use impersonation or a token broker for temporary privilege elevation rather than embedding an administrator credential.
- Avoid broad domain-wide delegation unless it is essential. Google warns that it can permit impersonation of any user in a Workspace domain, including super-administrators (Google service-account guidance).
Designing a multi-tool agent without one master secret
An agent that searches a knowledge base, sends messages and changes billing data should not present one identity with all three powers. Put an authorization boundary between the model and each tool:

- Define the tool’s allowed resources, operations, data fields and rate limits.
- Give the tool a dedicated service identity or have a broker mint a short-lived token for the exact operation.
- Require explicit user confirmation for irreversible or high-impact actions, even when the credential permits them.
- Validate model-generated arguments against schemas, ownership checks and business rules before sending them downstream.
- Log the requesting user, agent run, tool, identity, resource, decision and result without logging bearer tokens.
A credential establishes which principal may call a service; it does not validate the agent’s reasoning or prevent a permitted tool from being misused. AWS guidance for agent-tool integrations pairs authentication with TLS, input/output validation, audit logging, anomaly monitoring and rate limits (AWS Prescriptive Guidance on agentic AI frameworks, platforms, protocols and tools).
A practical rollout checklist
- Map ownership: write down whether every resource belongs to a user, tenant, application or cloud project.
- Choose the principal: user OAuth for user-owned data; service identity for unattended application work; restricted key only for a compatible key-only API.
- Minimize permissions: select the narrowest OAuth scopes, IAM roles, resource policies and key restrictions.
- Minimize lifetime: use short-lived tokens, federation or impersonation; set key and refresh-token rotation schedules.
- Isolate secrets: keep keys, private keys, access tokens and refresh tokens out of prompts, client bundles, repositories, tickets and logs.
- Harden the tool boundary: use TLS, schema validation, authorization checks, confirmation for destructive actions and rate limits.
- Make operations observable: record a stable user or workload identity, tool, resource, outcome and correlation ID.
- Test failure paths: simulate expired tokens, revoked consent, disabled service accounts, leaked keys, quota exhaustion and provider outages.
- Prepare recovery: know who can revoke each credential, how to rotate it without downtime and how to investigate historical use.
Common mistakes and the corrective choice
| Mistake | Why it fails | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Putting an API key in JavaScript, a mobile package or a prompt | Anyone who can inspect the client or model context can copy and replay it. | Move the call behind a backend and issue only narrowly authorized tool requests. |
| Using one service account for every agent tool | A compromise of one component inherits every role. | Split identities or broker temporary, operation-specific tokens. |
| Requesting broad OAuth scopes “for future features” | Consent is harder to explain and a token compromise grants unnecessary access. | Start with the smallest scopes and add them through a deliberate consent change. |
| Downloading a private service-account key when federation is available | The file may persist in backups, images, laptops or repositories. | Use attached identity, impersonation or workload identity federation. |
| Assuming a valid token makes an action safe | Authentication does not check intent, parameters or business impact. | Validate inputs, enforce policy and require confirmation for consequential actions. |
| Logging complete authorization headers | Operational logs become a credential cache. | Redact secrets and log identifiers, outcomes and metadata instead. |
How to decide when provider guidance conflicts
Follow the target API’s current production documentation first, then apply your organization’s stricter controls. A provider may support keys for one API but recommend IAM for another; it may require OAuth app verification for sensitive scopes; or it may expose federation only in selected regions or runtimes. Preserve those qualifications in your design rather than turning one provider’s exception into a universal rule.
Google Cloud’s published statement is deliberately qualified: “For most APIs, we recommend you don’t use authorization keys in production environments” (Google Cloud API-key best practices). OpenAI similarly says, “For supported workloads, use workload identity federation instead of storing a long-lived OpenAI API key” (OpenAI, Best Practices for API Key Safety). In both cases, “most” and “supported” matter: verify your exact API, account and runtime.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Bottom line
Choose the identity that matches ownership and the credential lifetime that matches risk. User OAuth with least-privilege scopes is the normal answer for an agent acting for a person. A dedicated service account or federated workload identity is the normal answer for unattended application work. An API key is a compatibility option, not a default agent identity: keep it server-side, constrain it, monitor it and maintain a tested rotation and revocation path. Whatever label appears in the configuration, secure storage, least privilege, short lifetimes, auditable actions and tool-level validation are the controls that keep an agent from turning valid access into excessive access.
