A brief Apex Legends freeze can come from a local frame-time stall, background software or game files, or a network hitch. Check the in-game Performance Display while it happens: a falling FPS reading with steady network indicators points toward local troubleshooting, while rising latency or packet loss points toward the connection or server. That split is a practical way to choose what to check next—not a definitive diagnostic test.
What a one-second freeze can—and cannot—tell you
A short pause is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A local rendering or system interruption and a network delay can feel similar in a match, and EA’s support guidance covers both. Its pages do not identify one universal cause for a freeze lasting about a second, nor do they establish how often it happens or which cause is most common.
EA describes the network effects directly: “High ping and packet loss can create lag and negatively affect your gameplay.” EA’s Apex network troubleshooting guide explains the indicators and connection checks.
Check FPS, latency, and packet loss during the freeze
- In Apex, open Settings > Gameplay and enable Performance Display.
- During the next hitch, note whether FPS falls and whether latency or packet loss changes.
- If FPS drops while latency and packet loss stay steady, begin with local performance and platform checks. If latency or packet loss rises, follow the network checks below.
EA says ping measures round-trip time and packet loss means data fails to make the round trip. The FPS-versus-network split is an inference for troubleshooting, not a formal EA diagnostic rule; more than one issue can also occur at once.

If latency or packet loss rises
Choose a nearby data center and check for service trouble
From the game’s launch screen, select the data center closest to your location. A more distant center can mean more travel time for data and higher ping or packet loss. If several or all data centers show poor conditions, check EA server status and official PlayApex updates. Server load or service problems can contribute to poor network readings; if no outage is reported and the issue persists, look at your local connection.
Check the local connection
- Consider whether other people or devices are using the same Wi-Fi, whether background apps are active, and whether the router is distant or obstructed.
- Restart the router if connection troubleshooting or an error-specific EA instruction calls for it.
- If practical, test Ethernet to see whether wireless conditions are contributing to network symptoms. A cable will not fix a local FPS drop, damaged game files, or a server outage.
EA’s broad ping guidance says under 50 ms is particularly good, under 100 ms will generally keep play running well, and above 100 ms may begin to cause lag. These are general support guidelines, not guarantees: latency below 100 ms does not rule out a brief hitch. See EA’s explanation of ping and packet loss.

If FPS falls or the readings point to a local hitch
Start with reversible PC checks
- Close background applications that may be competing for system resources, then check whether the freeze returns.
- If it continues, try a clean boot to disable background tasks that may interfere with the game.
- Test a frame-rate cap. EA also lists V-Sync as an option for matching frame rate to display refresh; treat these as troubleshooting choices, not settings that must be enabled together.
- In the EA app, go to Library > Apex Legends > Manage > Repair to check the game files. Reinstall only if repair and simpler steps do not help.
- If an error code specifically indicates a graphics-driver or installation problem, follow the instructions for that error. Update graphics drivers when the matching EA guidance calls for it.
EA’s general Apex troubleshooting guidance includes local software and performance checks. Its error-code guidance is specific to the code and version; do not apply a remedy for an unrelated error.

EA’s Australia-localized requirements page lists the following recommended PC baseline for smooth 60 fps gameplay. Meeting it is useful context, not proof that the system cannot freeze: background activity, files, drivers, network conditions, or other factors may still be involved.

Use console-specific checks rather than PC steps such as changing graphics settings or repairing files through the EA app.

- Install the latest system software for your console.
- Disconnect attached USB devices temporarily and test whether the freeze continues.
- Restart the console. EA’s PlayStation guidance also includes a power cycle; if you use external storage, try installing or running the game from internal storage.
- If the problem persists, consider reinstalling the game after the less disruptive checks.
EA’s console troubleshooting guidance includes PlayStation steps; do not assume every step applies identically to Xbox. If you contact support, note your platform, game version, whether the whole console locks up or only Apex, and any error code.
