Automated optical inspection (AOI) uses cameras or scanners and image-analysis software to check manufactured parts for visible defects. In electronics assembly, it is commonly used to find misplaced components and visible soldering problems on printed circuit boards. AOI automates visual inspection; it does not prove that a board works electrically or reveal every defect hidden inside it.
How does automated optical inspection work?
An AOI system illuminates a part, captures one or more images, and analyzes them against programmed inspection criteria or reference information. Depending on the system, it may compare an image with a known-good example or evaluate features using design data and rules. Controlled lighting and multiple camera views can help reveal different surface features. The system flags suspected deviations for review; operators may adjust criteria to reduce false calls.
AOI can be installed inline as part of the production flow, or operated at-line or as a stand-alone station where a person loads parts for inspection. Placement depends on the manufacturing process and on whether a defect can still be corrected at that stage. ZEISS explains AOI and inspection setups.

In surface-mount technology (SMT) assembly, AOI commonly checks component presence, position, orientation, and visible solder condition. It can flag issues such as missing or shifted parts, incorrect polarity, solder bridges, too little or too much solder, and lifted leads. Yamaha’s SMT glossary describes post-reflow checks of component placement and soldering; systems can also inspect before reflow to catch placement problems earlier.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.

AOI examines what its imaging setup can see on exposed surfaces. Its findings depend on the inspection criteria, image quality, lighting, and access to the feature being checked; it is not a universal detector for every possible defect.
AOI versus SPI, X-ray inspection, and electrical testing
These inspection methods answer different questions and are often complementary rather than interchangeable.

| Method | What it examines | Typical point in the process |
|---|---|---|
| SPI (solder paste inspection) | Deposited solder paste | After paste printing and before component placement |
| AOI (automated optical inspection) | Component placement and visible assembly features, including exposed solder joints | At a selected assembly stage; commonly after placement or reflow |
| AXI (automated X-ray inspection) | Internal or obscured structures that visible-light imaging cannot inspect, such as joints beneath a ball-grid-array package | Where needed in the production flow |
| ICT (in-circuit testing) | Electrical behavior of circuit elements and connections | At a test stage in the production flow |
SPI is not another name for AOI: SPI checks paste before components are placed, while AOI checks placement and later visible assembly condition. Likewise, a board can pass AOI yet have an internal defect or an electrical fault. The Imaging Source’s AOI glossary outlines these inspection capabilities and limits.
What is the difference between 2D and 3D AOI?
Two-dimensional AOI analyzes surface images. It can be suitable for checking visible appearance, component presence, and placement, but it cannot directly measure solder-joint height or volume. Three-dimensional AOI uses techniques such as structured light, phase shifting, or laser profilometry to derive height and shape information.

| Approach | What it measures | Best-fit considerations |
|---|---|---|
| 2D AOI | Surface image features and appearance | Consider whether the relevant defects are visible in images and whether surface inspection provides enough information. |
| 3D AOI | Surface features plus derived height and shape information | Consider whether dimensional information is needed, along with board geometry, throughput requirements, and system complexity. |
Three-dimensional inspection is not automatically necessary for every production line. The choice should follow the defect types and dimensions that must be assessed, the board geometry, throughput needs, and the inspection criteria. The cited descriptions establish the capability distinction but do not establish universal speed or cost figures for either approach.
How AOI supports quality control—and what can go wrong
AOI provides repeatable image-based checks at a chosen point in manufacturing and can help identify visible assembly deviations. Its value depends on a well-configured process: inspection parameters, lighting, calibration, resolution, thresholds, program setup, maintenance, and verification all affect what the system detects and how many false calls it generates.

IPC-9716, dated December 2024, is titled “Requirements for Automated Optical Inspection (AOI): Process Control for Printed Board Assemblies.” IPC’s published scope covers AOI setup and process control, including inspection parameters, lighting, calibration, detectability, resolution, threshold limits, program setup, measurement system analysis, maintenance, and verification protocols. Its stated purpose includes reducing false calls and supporting quality, reliability, throughput, and cycle-time goals. It is framed around printed board assembly process control and end-product classes, not as a universal pass/fail rule for every AOI application. The linked document is IPC’s official scope and table of contents, not the full standard text: IPC-9716 scope and table of contents (PDF).
What AI changes in AOI
Computer-vision AI can be used to recognize patterns in inspection images. In a February 6, 2025 release about a Chief Technologist Council white paper, IPC discussed potential performance and efficiency gains while noting that manufacturing-floor adoption challenges remain. Those potential gains should not be treated as independently verified performance results for a particular line or application. IPC chief technology officer and vice president of technology solutions Matt Kelly said, “However, several challenges must be addressed before AI can be widely adopted on electronics manufacturing production floors.” IPC’s announcement about the AI and AOI white paper.

Where is AOI used?
AOI originated in electronics inspection and is especially common in printed circuit board assembly and SMT manufacturing. In those settings, it can inspect at different stages, including before or after reflow, depending on the defects a manufacturer needs to catch and whether they can still be repaired. Nordson describes AOI systems for PCB manufacturing and SMT.
