ANZ Home Buildings and Contents Plus combines cover for a home and its belongings, but whether it suits you depends on the sums insured, limits, exclusions, excess and quoted premium—not the Plus label alone. Its advertised extras include a capped building Safety Net, higher temporary-accommodation limits and included accidental-damage cover. Check the policy documents that apply to your purchase or renewal before deciding.

What ANZ Home Buildings and Contents Plus covers

ANZ offers building-only, contents-only and combined building-and-contents insurance, each at Standard or Plus level. Building cover is intended to help repair or rebuild the insured home after a covered event; contents cover applies to belongings. With a combined policy, assess the building and contents sums insured separately, as well as any optional cover.

ANZ Home Insurance is issued by Insurance Australia Limited under the CGU brand and distributed by ANZ; ANZ identifies CGU as part of IAG. The insurer’s policy documents—not the product name or headline feature summaries—set out the applicable terms. See ANZ’s home insurance information.

What Plus adds compared with Standard

ANZ describes Plus as including higher limits and additional features. The key published differences are the building Safety Net, temporary-accommodation caps and accidental-damage treatment. The value of those differences depends on your property, belongings and quote.

How the Building Plus Safety Net works

ANZ says: “If the cost to repair or rebuild your home is higher than your Building Sum Insured, CGU will pay up to 25% extra to help cover the gap.” The important qualifications are “up to” and the reference to the Building Sum Insured: it is a capped benefit, not unlimited replacement cover. The PDS determines when it applies and what costs qualify.

Do not treat the Safety Net as a reason to set an artificially low sum insured. Estimate current rebuilding costs carefully, then check the limit and conditions. ANZ recommends reviewing sums insured and provides a building calculator as a starting point; a calculator does not replace checking what your policy covers.

What to check for contents and valuables

Work out the current value of the belongings you want insured, and check whether the policy’s limits match the items you own. ANZ makes valuable-contents and portable-contents cover available as options. The PDS and your certificate should establish which options you selected, what item limits apply, and whether particular valuables must be separately specified.

Accidental damage is included with Plus and optional with Standard, but that does not mean every accidental loss is covered. Read the relevant definitions, exclusions and claim conditions before relying on it for a particular item or event.

Exclusions and limits matter as much as the headline benefits

ANZ’s product information gives examples of events or damage that may not be covered, including sea action, damage caused by the insured’s animals, and water escaping from a shower recess or base. These are examples, not a complete exclusions list. The applicable PDS sets out the full terms, including conditions, limits and exceptions.

Read the PDS alongside your certificate of insurance. The certificate records the cover and options applying to your policy; the PDS explains the policy terms. If a headline feature and a detail in the policy documents seem to differ, confirm the applicable wording with ANZ or the insurer before relying on the benefit.

Which policy version applies?

ANZ identifies its current PDS as applying to new policies bought from 14 June 2026 and policies renewing from 26 July 2026. If your policy was bought or renewed before the relevant date, do not assume these terms apply: check the booklet for your policy period. ANZ’s home insurance page links to product information and policy documents.

How to assess the quote before buying or renewing

  1. Confirm the cover type. Check whether the quote is for building, contents or both, and whether Standard or Plus is selected.
  2. Check the policy version. Match the purchase or renewal date to the PDS that applies.
  3. Review the sums insured. Estimate rebuilding costs and the value of your contents separately; consider whether any valuable items need to be specified.
  4. Compare excess and premium. Check the excess for the relevant claims, the quoted premium and any discounts in the current quote and ANZ’s premium, excess and discounts information. No single premium or cheapest-market conclusion follows from the product features alone.
  5. Verify options, limits and exclusions. Use the PDS and certificate to confirm accidental damage, portable or valuable-contents options, sub-limits and exclusions.
  6. Consider your circumstances. Decide whether the higher Plus limits and included accidental-damage cover justify the premium difference in your own quote.

Is ANZ Plus a good choice?

The published features make Plus worth considering if you want its higher temporary-accommodation caps, Building Safety Net or included accidental-damage cover. They do not establish that Plus is the right level for every homeowner or that it offers good value at a particular price. Suitability and cost depend on the property, location, selected sums insured, excess and policy conditions. Compare the actual quote with your needs and read the applicable documents before choosing.
