ANZ Contents Standard is a renter’s contents policy for personal belongings, with cover for listed events such as storms, floods, theft and accidental glass breakage, subject to policy terms. Its optional benefits include accidental damage, electric motor burnout, portable contents and valuable contents. Whether it fits depends on the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), your belongings, location, excess and quote—not the summary alone.

How does contents insurance work for renters?

A landlord’s building insurance covers the building, while landlord-owned items such as carpet, curtains or blinds belong to the landlord’s cover. It does not insure a renter’s personal belongings. Your own contents policy is intended to cover belongings you own, such as furniture, clothing, electronics, kitchen appliances, medical items and accessories. ANZ’s renter guidance explains this distinction.

Contents cover is not a guarantee that every item will be paid for after any loss. The policy defines insured events, exclusions, limits, excesses and how claims are assessed. Read those terms alongside your Certificate of Insurance, which records the cover selected for your policy.

What does ANZ Contents Insurance cover you against?

ANZ describes Contents Standard as “Flexible protection for common insured events” and gives storms, bushfires, floods, theft and vandalism to the home as examples. Its renter guidance also lists natural events including cyclones and earthquakes, theft or attempted theft, and accidental breakage of glass as benefits for Standard and Plus, subject to policy conditions. These are summaries, not a substitute for the effective PDS. See ANZ’s contents insurance overview.

Are my portable items covered for loss or damage outside my rented home?

Portable Contents is an optional benefit, but the public summary does not specify the precise places, events, item categories or limits it covers. Do not assume that choosing it automatically protects every item everywhere, or that standard contents cover follows possessions outside the home. Check the current PDS for the benefit’s scope, exclusions and item limits, then confirm what you selected in your Certificate of Insurance.

What is the maximum sum insured for valuable contents?

ANZ’s FAQ dated 31 January 2025 said an individual selected valuable item could be covered up to $10,000 unless it was separately specified. That is older FAQ information, not a confirmed current limit. Check the PDS that applies to your policy and your Certificate of Insurance for the current item cap, any requirement to specify an item, and any category sublimits. ANZ’s FAQ is dated 31 January 2025.

How much contents cover should I choose?

Set the sum insured using the cost to replace your belongings at today’s prices, rather than what you paid for them or what you think they might sell for second-hand. ANZ recommends reviewing whether the amount is sufficient and considering local risks such as bushfire or flood exposure. Its renter guidance also advises checking conditions, limits and optional benefits.

A sum insured is not necessarily the amount paid for every claim: policy limits, exclusions, the excess and claim terms can affect settlement. The current PDS and Certificate of Insurance are needed to establish how those rules apply.

What should you verify before choosing ANZ Contents Standard?

The PDS linked by ANZ is designated for policies commencing from 14 June 2026 or renewing from 26 July 2026. Confirm that it is the document applicable to the start or renewal date of the policy you are considering; terms can change between versions. The available public summary does not establish current Standard premiums, excess amounts, claim settlement rules, general contents sublimits, detailed exclusions or the precise scope of optional portable cover. Obtain the current quote and policy documents rather than relying on older figures.
