Claude has two separate pricing systems: subscriptions for using Claude’s apps and token-based billing for the developer API. The Free plan costs $0, Pro costs $20 monthly (or $200 annually), Max starts at $100 monthly, Team seats cost $25 or $125 monthly depending on tier, and Enterprise starts at $20 per seat monthly when billed annually, with a 20-seat minimum. A Pro subscription does not pay for Console API calls.
For API work, Anthropic charges by input and output tokens. On Anthropic’s 2026-05-27 list-price sheet, Opus 4.7 is $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, Sonnet 4.6 is $3 and $15, and Haiku 4.5 is $1 and $5. Every subscription also has limits that reset on a rolling five-hour window; paid plans add weekly limits, and there is no guaranteed message count.
Claude plan prices at a glance
The right plan depends on whether you need occasional chats, sustained individual work, a team workspace, or organization-wide controls. Subscription prices cover Claude’s hosted interfaces and features. API requests are a separate meter unless a plan explicitly includes credits.

What the Free plan includes
The Free plan is designed for trying Claude and for intermittent personal work. It provides access through the web, desktop and mobile apps, plus web search, file creation, code execution, memory, connectors and Artifacts. Usage limits apply, so a free account can become unavailable until its window resets.
Free access is not an API development plan. If you need programmatic calls from an application, create a separate Console billing arrangement and budget for token usage.
Claude Pro: price, features and the API boundary
Pro costs $20 per month, or $200 when paid annually. The annual option works out to a $17 monthly equivalent, but the charge is made as an annual payment. Pro adds more usage than Free, Claude Code, projects, additional model access, Claude Science, and integrations with Microsoft 365 and Chrome.
Those benefits apply to the Claude product experience. Anthropic explicitly separates Pro from Console API billing: a Pro subscription does not include API usage through the Console. If you use Claude in the apps and also call a model from software, plan for both the subscription and metered API charges.
When Pro is the sensible upgrade
- Choose Pro when your work regularly reaches Free limits and you value projects, Claude Code or the listed integrations.
- Choose annual billing only if you expect to keep the subscription for the year; its effective monthly price is lower but it is not a month-to-month commitment.
- Do not buy Pro as a way to obtain unlimited or prepaid API calls; API spending remains separate.
Claude Max: higher session capacity and monthly credits
Max starts at $100 per month. Anthropic describes Max 5x and Max 20x tiers by their usage relative to Pro: 5x or 20x Pro usage in each rolling five-hour session. Max also raises output limits and provides priority access.

The “5x” and “20x” labels are not fixed message quotas. A long conversation, a demanding model, large files and feature use consume capacity differently from short prompts. Anthropic does not publish a universal message count for these plans.
Max includes monthly API credits: $100 for Max 5x and $200 for Max 20x. Credits are not the same as unlimited API access. Once the monthly credit is consumed, further API use follows the applicable billing arrangement and rates. Confirm the current Max tier price and credit terms before relying on them for a production budget.

Team plans for shared workspaces
Team is available for organizations with 2–150 users. Standard seats cost $25 per month or $20 per seat per month with annual billing. Premium seats cost $125 per month or $100 per seat per month annually, and provide five times the usage of a standard seat.
Team adds central administration, single sign-on (SSO) and connectors. Its API credits are pooled across the workspace, up to $500 per month. A pooled allowance can be useful when some members make little API use and others make more, but it still has a ceiling; budget for standard pay-as-you-go charges after the pool is exhausted.
Choosing a standard or premium seat
- Use standard seats when most members need ordinary collaborative Claude usage and predictable per-seat cost.
- Use premium seats for people whose work routinely consumes substantially more session capacity; the premium price is five times the standard monthly price on both billing schedules.
- Model the whole workspace, not just the heaviest user, because API credits are pooled while seat charges apply to each assigned user.
Enterprise pricing and controls
Enterprise is priced at $20 per seat per month when billed annually, requires at least 20 seats, and adds usage at API rates. The minimum annual seat commitment therefore starts at 20 seats multiplied by $20 per month, before any API consumption.

Enterprise controls include SCIM provisioning, audit logs, custom retention, role-based access and network controls. An optional HIPAA-ready offering is available. These controls matter when identity lifecycle, auditability, data-retention policy or network governance are procurement requirements rather than optional conveniences.
Enterprise’s seat price should not be mistaken for an API bundle. Organization API and Console usage is billed at standard pay-as-you-go rates unless a contract states otherwise.
How Claude’s usage limits work
Anthropic says every plan has limits that reset on a rolling five-hour session window, while paid plans add weekly limits. Activity across Claude on the web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code draws from one shared pool for the account.
There is no fixed number of messages per plan. Consumption depends on conversation length, the model selected and the features used. A short exchange may use far less capacity than a long project with files, code execution and extended generated output.
What happens when you hit a limit
- Wait for the rolling five-hour window or the applicable weekly allowance to reset.
- Move to a higher subscription tier if the workload is routinely constrained.
- Enable usage credits at standard API rates when that option is available and you need to continue without changing the subscription.
Because limits and prices are changeable, treat the account’s current usage display and Anthropic’s current pricing page as authoritative for a purchase decision. Do not translate “5x” or “20x” into a promised number of prompts.

Claude API pricing: token rates, not a flat subscription
Anthropic’s API is metered by tokens. Input tokens are the text and other request content sent to a model; output tokens are the generated response. The following figures come from Anthropic’s 2026-05-27 list-price sheet and are expressed per one million tokens.

Each figure is a list price from Anthropic’s 2026 sheet; it is not a promise that a cloud marketplace, contract or future price list will match it. Prompt-cache writes, cache hits, batch processing and fast mode have separate prices that vary by model and mode.
Why output can dominate an API bill
Output rates are higher than input rates for all three examples. A service that sends short instructions but requests long reports, code files or structured data can therefore spend more on generated tokens than on the prompt. Set output limits, request only the detail you need and select a less expensive model for tasks that do not require the highest capability.
Illustrative cost calculation
Suppose a request uses 100,000 input tokens and 20,000 output tokens. At Sonnet 4.6’s listed rates, the calculation is (0.1 × $3.00) + (0.02 × $15.00) = $0.60. This is an illustration of the meter, not a typical workload estimate; actual token counts, cache behavior and any batch or fast-mode pricing determine the bill.

API throughput is governed by usage tiers, request and rate limits, and organizational spend limits. Anthropic says configured limits can be viewed in the Console or through its Rate Limits API. A request can fail because of throughput even when the organization still has spending capacity, so monitor both dimensions.

Console credits and monthly invoicing are separate from an individual Pro subscription. Max and Team can include the credits described above. Invoiced organizations are billed for aggregate API and Console usage at standard pay-as-you-go rates. Keep subscription invoices, credit balances and API usage reports in separate budget lines.
Controls that prevent surprise spending
- Set an organizational spend limit appropriate to the application’s risk.
- Track input and output tokens separately; output-heavy features need particular attention.
- Use prompt caching for repeated context when its write and hit prices improve the workload economics.
- Use batch processing for asynchronous jobs when the applicable batch rate is lower than the real-time rate.
- Review rate-limit settings before a launch so retries do not amplify traffic or costs.
Anthropic direct, Bedrock, Vertex AI or Microsoft Foundry?
The model may be available through Anthropic’s own Console and through cloud platforms such as AWS Bedrock, Google Vertex AI and Microsoft Foundry. The choice is primarily a procurement and operations decision, not a shortcut around token economics.

When direct Anthropic access fits
Direct Console access is usually the simplest route for an individual developer or a small team that wants Anthropic’s own account controls, rate-limit view and billing. It keeps the API relationship and usage reporting in one place, but it may not satisfy an organization that requires all AI spending to flow through an existing cloud procurement process.

Bedrock, Vertex AI or Foundry can be preferable when your organization already standardizes on that cloud, requires its identity and network controls, or needs consolidated procurement. Confirm the platform’s model availability, regional support, rate limits, caching and batch terms, because those details can differ from direct Anthropic Console billing.
