Anthropic has put OpenTelemetry trace export for Claude into public beta. Announced October 14, 2026, the feature sends telemetry from the Messages API, Claude Managed Agents, and Claude SDKs to an OTLP-compatible observability platform, so Claude activity can be investigated beside the rest of an application’s traces.
What Anthropic launched
The beta covers model calls, agent turns, tool use, MCP server calls, latency, token counts, and request or session identifiers. Anthropic says traces from Claude Code or Cowork can also be viewed alongside Claude Platform agent telemetry. OpenTelemetry is vendor-neutral, so the same export path can feed an existing observability stack rather than forcing a separate Claude-only viewer.
Claude spans follow the OpenTelemetry GenAI semantic conventions with Anthropic-specific attributes. The published span reference identifies convention commit e57c543b, dated September 24, 2026, and warns that span names and attributes may change while the feature is in beta.

The SDK emits spans for Python, TypeScript, C#, Go, Java, PHP, and Ruby.

How to configure API trace export
An organization administrator configures API export in the Claude Console. The destination is an OTLP/HTTP endpoint reached over HTTPS, normally on port 443, with authentication credentials supplied in request headers.
- Open the Claude Console as an organization administrator and add an OpenTelemetry destination.
- Enter the observability provider’s OTLP/HTTP endpoint and the required request-header credentials.
- Use the Console’s delivery test to verify that the endpoint accepts spans.
- Choose the destination’s content mode: metadata only or full content.
- Monitor the destination status after enabling it. The Console reports Healthy, Failing, No data, or Disabled.
Console API tracing covers requests from any client that uses the Messages API or Managed Agents. SDK tracing is narrower: it applies to clients instrumented with an Anthropic SDK. Teams can enable either path independently or use both to connect Claude spans with their own application spans.

How SDK tracing works
For SDK export, install the Claude SDK for your language and register a tracer provider in the application. The provider sends spans through the application’s OpenTelemetry pipeline, allowing Claude model calls and tool activity to appear in the same trace as surrounding services. The exact setup is language-specific, so keep the SDK’s instrumentation configuration aligned with the collector or backend already used by your team.

All of these are named as OTLP destinations; actual setup effort, retention, access controls, geographic processing, dashboards, evaluation tools, alerting, and cost views depend on the provider. When choosing one, check whether it already serves your engineering and security teams, whether it accepts the required OTLP/HTTP headers, and how it handles prompt and response data.
Decision factors for a destination

Metadata-only versus full-content traces
Each destination and SDK client has a content mode. Metadata-only is the default and includes identifiers, timing, status, token counts, and selected agent, tool, and MCP metadata. Full content adds prompts and responses, subject to span-size limits.

Organizations subject to HIPAA, FERPA, or K-12 data-handling restrictions export metadata only, regardless of the selected content mode. That rule should be treated as an enforcement boundary, not as a setting to work around.
Span-size limits and truncation
Full-content spans hold up to 0.75 MB by default. Anthropic says that limit can contain an English context of about 200,000 tokens; a full 1-million-token context is about 4 MB. When content exceeds the applicable limit, it is shortened and the span is marked anthropic.content.truncated=true. A truncated span is therefore not evidence that the model received only the retained text.

Beta limitations and failure recovery
Exported spans are best effort. Delivery can lose spans, and unsampled requests may have no span at all, so traces are not a complete ledger of API usage. Use Anthropic’s Usage API when complete API-key usage accounting is required.

- Each delivery has a total 10-second timeout, including a resend without compression.
- A destination can be automatically disabled after all deliveries fail for 24 hours.
- After correcting the endpoint, credentials, network access, or backend problem, an administrator can re-enable the destination in the Claude Console.
- A Healthy status confirms the destination is accepting the Console’s checks; it does not turn best-effort tracing into guaranteed accounting.
A practical rollout plan
- Start with metadata-only export in a non-production or narrowly scoped organization.
- Confirm that the OTLP endpoint, headers, firewall rules, and provider permissions work by using the Console test.
- Instrument SDK clients with a tracer provider where application-level trace correlation is needed.
- Verify that model calls, tool calls, MCP activity, latency, tokens, and IDs appear as expected, and check whether content is being truncated.
- Define retention and access policies with the observability provider before enabling full content.
- Monitor delivery status and backend ingestion, while using the Usage API for authoritative usage totals.
