For many practical wire antennas, stranded copper is a flexible, workable starting point. Choose instead by matching the wire’s strength and handling needs to the antenna’s frequency, span, supports, exposure and clearance. Copper-clad steel can suit a permanent run where strength matters; soft solid copper can stretch on a long unsupported resonant antenna and change its tuning. No one material or gauge is right for every build.
Choose wire for the installation as well as the signal
Antenna wire must carry RF current and remain at the intended length and position. Material, gauge, insulation, support spacing, weather exposure, portability and visibility all affect the choice. A wire that is electrically usable may still be a poor fit if it stretches, kinks, sags or is difficult to secure.
The ARRL identifies stranded copper, solid copper and copper-plated steel (Copperweld) as common antenna conductors in its dipole construction article. The descriptions below are practical trade-offs, not a controlled comparison of particular products.

Compare the main wire materials
| Wire type | Practical advantages | Limitations and suitable use |
|---|---|---|
| Stranded copper | Flexible and easy to handle; a reasonable default for many practical builds if its mechanical strength suits the span. | Check the product’s strength and support requirements for the actual installation. |
| Soft solid copper | Can be used in an antenna design that accommodates its properties. | ARRL cautions against soft solid copper house wire on long, unsupported resonant runs: stretching can change the installed length and detune the antenna. Solid wire can also kink during handling. |
| Copper-clad steel | The steel core provides mechanical strength, making it a candidate for permanent runs; the copper surface carries most RF current because of skin effect. | Avoid kinks and damaging bends, which can weaken solid conductor. |
| Hard-drawn copper | Electronics Notes describes it as stretching less than ordinary copper, which can make it useful for long-wire installations where reduced stretch matters. | Match it to the design and installation; the cited guidance does not establish a universally superior wire. |
How to choose a gauge
Gauge is not selected from RF current alone. The ARRL’s guidance treats strength, ease of handling, cost, availability and visibility as relevant considerations. Its dipole article recommends reasonably large wire for permanent antennas, while noting that smaller wire can work for low-profile or temporary uses and at higher frequencies. These are general practical recommendations, not a universal specification: follow the antenna design’s requirements and account for the supports and conditions at your site.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
An ARRL beginner article uses a 100-watt transmitter and approximately 50-ohm radiation resistance in an illustrative calculation. That example is not a general wire rating, and should not be extrapolated to different power levels or antenna geometries.
Insulated or bare wire?
Both insulated and bare wire can be used in HF antenna contexts. Insulation adds weight and diameter and can lower the resonant frequency for a given wire length. Insulation also varies among brands, which can complicate modeling. If you calculate or model an antenna, use the actual conductor and insulation characteristics rather than assuming all insulated wire behaves alike. See the ARRL’s supplement on antenna modeling and insulation.

Plan supports, strain relief and clearance
A dipole commonly uses a center insulator to support and isolate the feed-line connection, plus end insulators to support and isolate the wire ends. Arrange mechanical strain relief so tension on the antenna is not borne by electrical joints. Choose supports and spacing for the wire and the conditions where it will be installed.
Resonant dipole ends can reach high voltage, including at modest transmitter power, as ARRL explains in its dipole construction guidance. Keep accessible wire away from people and animals and prevent accidental contact. This general construction advice is not a site-specific assessment of grounding, structural safety, electrical-code compliance or RF exposure; follow the requirements that apply to your installation.

A practical selection checklist
- Identify the antenna design and frequency, and use its specified wire dimensions and construction requirements.
- Consider the unsupported span, support points and expected tension. Avoid soft solid copper for long unsupported resonant runs where stretching could alter the length.
- Choose a conductor that can be handled and secured without unacceptable stretching, sagging or kinking.
- Decide whether bare or insulated wire fits the installation, and account for insulation when tuning or modeling.
- Plan insulators, strain relief, weather exposure, visibility and clearance from people and animals before raising the wire.
