Two free office alternatives appeared in October 2026, but they target different needs. WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft are open-source, Office-style desktop applications for Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD. Tiny Little Office is a browser-only collection of ten small tools built around local storage and shareable URLs rather than accounts or synchronized cloud files. The desktop projects offer broader document compatibility; the browser suite offers a simpler, more private workflow. All are early projects, so neither should yet be treated as a drop-in replacement for critical work.
What launched in October 2026
Brandon Thomas released three Rust applications—WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft—under MIT or Apache 2.0 licenses. They are free, open source and designed to resemble the familiar word-processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications in Microsoft Office. TechSpot described the software on October 13, 2026, as early alpha rather than finished office software.
Veteran developer and technology thinker Paul Ford released Tiny Little Office, covered by TechRadar on October 16, 2026. It is a free browser suite with ten separate tools and no login requirement.

WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft: the desktop-style suite
WordCraft
WordCraft runs natively on Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD, and can also run in a browser through WebAssembly. It reads and writes DOCX and supports ODT, RTF, HTML, Markdown and plain text. It can import legacy DOC files and export PDFs with selectable text, links and bookmarks.

The feature target includes Word-like ribbons, styles, tables, track changes, references and mail merge. The project is reported at 88% of Word’s ribbon-based commands, while its broader estimate is about 60% feature parity. Those figures are project estimates, not independent compatibility tests.
GridCraft
GridCraft is the spreadsheet application and uses XLSX as its native file format. Its developer reports that about 89% of Excel ribbon and menu commands and approximately 98% of worksheet functions are implemented. It is also scriptable by AI agents.
The same project describes GridCraft as roughly 50% ready for real work. That distinction matters: a high count of implemented commands or functions does not establish that complex workbooks, macros, charts or unusual formatting will behave correctly.

DeckCraft
DeckCraft opens and saves PPTX files and exports presentations to PDF. Its GitHub project claim says it reaches 79% feature parity across 191 PowerPoint features. The overall readiness estimate is about 55%.
As with the other applications, the percentage is a claim from the project, not a laboratory benchmark. Presentation fidelity should be checked by opening the exported file in the software used for delivery.

It requires no account and no cloud access. Its defining rule is “the link is the document”: edits are encoded into the URL, and sharing that URL sends an exact copy. A recipient may edit the copy, but those edits stay local and do not synchronize back to the sender.
Links can be password-protected, set to read-only or configured to expire after periods ranging from one hour to one month. Users can keep multiple files locally in the browser or choose to wipe everything when closing the page.
The deliberate trade-offs
Ford says, “There are lots of tradeoffs,” and that the design is not how web apps are normally expected to work. URLs can become unwieldy in chat, video and image uploads are not supported, and there is no live synchronized editing. Ford characterizes the model as “collaborative like handing out zines at a street fair,” rather than collaborative like a shared online document.

The code is open source and supports LLM agents. TechRadar reports that project documentation indicates Claude Code performed at least some of the work, although the exact proportion of AI-generated code is not established.

Which option fits a particular job?
Choose the desktop suite for Office-like files
WordCraft is the most suitable starting point when you need DOCX exchange, tracked changes, mail merge or PDF export. GridCraft is aimed at XLSX workbooks and formula-heavy tasks, while DeckCraft is aimed at PPTX presentations. Keep the original file and verify every important document in the software your recipients will use.

The browser suite is a better fit for a quick outline, calculator, diagram, itinerary or small document that you want to share without creating an account. Its URL-based model avoids a server account and gives the sender control over expiration and read-only settings, but it is unsuitable for media-rich documents or teams that need a single live copy.

Risks to understand before relying on either
- Alpha software can fail. Save backups and test imports, exports, formulas, fonts, links and pagination before using these tools for deadlines.
- Feature percentages are not guarantees. The reported 88%, 89%, 98% and 79% figures come from project claims or estimates, not independent testing.
- Compatibility is narrower than the headline. Supporting a file extension does not prove full fidelity for macros, embedded objects, advanced charts, animations or unusual templates.
- Tiny Little Office links can be impractical. Long URLs may be difficult to paste or preserve, and a copied document is not a synchronized team workspace.
- Local privacy still requires device care. Browser-stored files can be lost when storage is cleared, and anyone who obtains a non-protected link may be able to open the shared copy.
Why these releases matter
Both projects show a different path for AI-assisted software. Thomas’s suite tries to recreate the established desktop office model in Rust, while Ford’s suite rejects account-based web applications in favor of self-contained documents encoded in links. Thomas has explained his motivation bluntly: “I hate LibreOffice so bad. It once killed a 40-page essay I wrote the week it was due, during finals.” He also said of another established tool, “GIMP sucks. It has always sucked. There is no reason to save broken software.” Those comments explain the emphasis on replacing legacy interfaces, but they do not demonstrate production reliability.
For now, the practical conclusion is conservative: experiment with copies, keep backups and use established software for irreplaceable work until compatibility and maintenance histories become clearer.
