An anonymous search engine aims to keep your searches from being tied to your identity or a persistent personal profile. That does not mean it never receives your IP address, retains no query data, or makes you anonymous when you click a result. The exact protection depends on the provider’s policy and technical design.
What “anonymous search” means
In this context, “anonymous” describes the search provider’s intended handling of your activity: it aims not to create a personally identifiable search history or profile. It is not a promise that every part of using the internet is untraceable.
A provider may receive your IP address to deliver a search request while saying it does not retain that address alongside the query. Receiving an address and storing it with a search are different things. Some services may also retain de-identified or aggregate query data, or handle approximate location to provide local results. The provider’s current policy determines what those terms mean in practice.

What information might a search provider handle?
Privacy policies can differ even when services use similar labels. For example, DuckDuckGo says it does not save or share search history and does not save IP addresses alongside searches. Its policy also explains that a device sends an IP address when connecting, which DuckDuckGo uses temporarily to deliver content and for security. For local results, the company says it uses the automatically supplied IP address for a GeoIP lookup and then discards it. These are statements about DuckDuckGo’s service, not an independent audit of every system or third party.

Brave Search’s privacy notice describes collecting and storing de-identified query data, including the plain-text query, device platform, operating system, country, language, and date. It separately says anonymous local results use the device’s IP address without sharing or storing it. This illustrates why “private” does not necessarily mean that no query text is retained: check whether data is described as identifiable, how it is used, and what the provider currently says it keeps.
DuckDuckGo’s policy states: “We don’t save or share your search, chat, or browsing history when you search on DuckDuckGo, chat on Duck.ai, or use our apps and extensions.” That is the company’s description of its policy, rather than an independently established finding.

Does an anonymous search engine protect you after you click?
Not necessarily. A search engine controls the query sent to its own service; the site you visit from a result is a separate interaction. That destination may receive information about your visit and use its own tracking methods. Unless the search provider offers a separate proxy feature and you use it, private search should not be treated as anonymous browsing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Startpage describes Anonymous View as a separate way to visit result pages: it retrieves and displays the page using Startpage’s IP address and routes supporting files through the proxy. This differs from simply returning search results with privacy protections. Check whether a provider’s feature covers only searches or also the visit after a click.

A 2023 study by Brave Research authors, “Understanding the Privacy Risks of Popular Search Engine Advertising Systems”, reported navigation-based tracking on 100% of DuckDuckGo search-ad clicks in the sample they tested. That result is specific to the study’s sample; it is not a universal rate for all ads, users, or current implementations.
How search privacy differs from other privacy tools
- Private search: Addresses how a search provider handles your queries and whether it links them to you.
- Private-browsing window: Primarily affects local browser storage and session behavior; it does not by itself prevent the services you contact from receiving information about requests.
- Proxy: Can make a destination receive a request from the proxy rather than directly from your IP address. Coverage depends on how the proxy feature works and whether it is used for the destination visit.
- VPN: Changes the network path for traffic. It is a separate layer and does not, by itself, prevent a search provider or destination site from using other information to identify or track activity.
These tools address different parts of online activity. None is a universal guarantee of anonymity, and a search engine cannot control every tracking method on a destination website.

How to assess a provider’s privacy claims
Read the provider’s current policy and feature descriptions for the specific service you use. Look for clear answers to these questions:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Does the provider store query text? If so, does it say the data is de-identified or aggregated, and for what purpose?
- How does it handle IP addresses: does it receive them, retain them, or associate them with searches?
- Does it infer or request location for local results, and what does it say happens to that location data?
- Are result-page visits proxied, or do the stated protections stop at the search-results page?
- What does the policy say about sharing information with hosting, content, or advertising partners?
Policy descriptions help explain a provider’s stated practices, but a policy excerpt alone is not enough to identify a universally “most anonymous” search engine. A stronger comparative claim would require current policy review and independent technical evidence.
