Recognized revenue records goods or services delivered during a reporting period; annualized revenue estimates what a current revenue pace would amount to over a year. They answer different questions, so they are not interchangeable. The annualized figure is often a company-defined run rate, while recognized revenue follows the applicable accounting rules and the company’s performance under customer contracts.
What recognized revenue measures
Recognized revenue is the amount reported for a period as a company satisfies its promises to customers. Under U.S. GAAP’s ASC 606, a company identifies the contract and its performance obligations, determines and allocates the transaction price, then recognizes revenue when or as each obligation is satisfied. The core principle is to depict the transfer of promised goods or services in an amount reflecting the consideration the company expects to receive. The result is tied to delivery or performance during the reporting period, not simply to when the company invoices a customer or receives cash. Under IFRS, IFRS 15 provides a related framework; the applicable standard and any relevant scope exceptions depend on the company and contract. Australia’s official standard is AASB 15.
What annualized revenue measures
Annualized revenue is a projection: it takes a current revenue pace and expresses it as an annual amount. In a subscription business, this may mean multiplying a current recurring-revenue base by a factor to estimate a year’s pace. The method is not universal. A company may include different contract types or revenue components, use a particular measurement date, or make assumptions about renewals and cancellations.

Annualized revenue is therefore not necessarily the revenue earned or recognized during a completed reporting period, nor should the label alone be taken to mean audited GAAP or IFRS revenue. Annual recurring revenue (ARR) is a related operating metric often used for subscription businesses, but companies define it individually. One issuer’s SEC filing explicitly says its ARR is not calculated from recognized or unearned revenue; that definition illustrates why investors should check the company’s own methodology rather than assume a standard formula (SEC-filed ARR disclosure).
How the two figures can differ

Example: a one-year subscription
Suppose a customer signs a one-year subscription for $12,000 and receives the service evenly throughout the year. If the contract’s promises and delivery pattern support recognition evenly over that term, the company might recognize $1,000 per month as it provides the service, while describing the subscription as a $12,000 annualized pace. This is conditional arithmetic, not a rule for every contract: the promised services, delivery pattern, and applicable accounting framework determine recognition.

Billing, cash, and deferred revenue are different too
A company may invoice or collect payment before it has provided all contracted service. The portion related to performance not yet satisfied may be reported as deferred revenue or a contract liability, depending on the circumstances and the company’s presentation. Conversely, recognizing revenue for a period does not mean the company received the corresponding cash in that same period. Billing, cash collection, recognized revenue, and an annualized run rate are related but distinct measures. How to compare figures in a company report
When a company presents annualized revenue or ARR alongside recognized revenue, use these checks before drawing conclusions about growth, scale, or valuation:

- Match the time basis. Identify the reporting period for recognized revenue and the measurement date behind the annualized figure.
- Read the definition. Check which contracts, products, and revenue components are included, how the figure is annualized, and whether the company changed its method.
- Check the revenue mix. Separate recurring subscriptions from one-time sales, setup fees, usage charges, and services where the disclosure allows it.
- Review contract assumptions. Look for service start dates, term length, renewals, churn, cancellations, and price changes.
- Identify the accounting framework. Determine whether the financial statements use U.S. GAAP, IFRS, or a local equivalent, and consider any relevant scope exceptions.
- Use the latest filings. Compare the metric definition and recognized-revenue disclosures across reporting periods rather than assuming the same label guarantees the same calculation.
A run rate can help describe the scale of a current recurring business, while recognized revenue shows performance recorded over a defined period. Neither figure alone tells the full story; interpret each according to its own scope and assumptions.
