The most reliable early route in Anime Vanguards is to learn the lobby systems, push Story stages, summon with a plan, and preserve reroll resources for units you expect to keep. Build a team around damage, crowd control, and economy rather than chasing an unverified tier list, and re-check every code, rate, pity rule, and evolution cost in the live game because those details change by patch.

What Anime Vanguards asks you to learn first

Anime Vanguards is a Roblox anime tower-defense game. Your early decisions happen across several connected systems:

  • Lobby: the hub where you access stages, summons, inventory and other services.
  • Story stages: the clearest early progression route and a way to learn placement, waves and team weaknesses.
  • Summons: the main way to add units to your roster.
  • Inventory: where you inspect a unit, its level and available upgrade information before committing resources.
  • Traits: passive modifiers that can change how a unit performs. The community-maintained traits reference identifies Mandra in the lobby as the Traits NPC for rerolls and notes that a unit can arrive from a summon with a trait.

A September 14, 2026 beginner guide recommends treating Story as the initial path and avoiding the temptation to spend every Gem on the first banner. That is practical fan advice, not a guaranteed optimal route for every future patch; use the live banner and stage rewards as your final authority. Read the Getting Started guide.

The basic loop is simple: earn resources by playing, use those resources to obtain and improve units, then return to harder stages or modes with a better team. The difficult part is deciding what not to spend yet.

Your first session: a safe sequence

Use this order when you are new or returning after a long break. It minimizes irreversible spending while you learn what the current interface offers.

  1. Walk the lobby before summoning. Locate the Story entrance, summon area, inventory screen and Mandra, the Traits NPC. Menus and NPC positions can change, so read the current labels rather than relying on an old video.
  2. Open inventory and inspect your starting roster. Check each unit’s attack role, range, targeting options and upgrade buttons. Do not assume the rarity label alone tells you which unit belongs in your first team.
  3. Enter the earliest available Story stage. Treat the first clear as a tutorial for enemy paths, placement range, wave timing and how much starting currency your team needs. If a stage offers multiple difficulties, begin with the one you can clear consistently.
  4. Record the reason for a loss. A defeat caused by leaked fast enemies calls for coverage or crowd control; a defeat at the final wave may indicate insufficient damage or poor upgrade timing. This diagnosis is more useful than replacing a unit at random.
  5. Summon only after checking the current banner. Decide whether you need a damage dealer, a crowd-control option or economy support. Keep part of your Gem balance uncommitted until you understand the banner’s rules and your next upgrade target.
  6. Build a small, coherent team. Equip units that cover different jobs and that you can afford to upgrade. A larger collection of unbuilt units is less useful than a compact roster with clear roles.
  7. Revisit inventory after each meaningful upgrade. Compare the unit’s role and cost with the next Story stage. Save reroll materials for a unit that has demonstrated staying power instead of spending them simply because they are available.

Choose units by role, not by a universal tier list

No authoritative, current ranked list or matchup chart is established in the available material. A unit that excels on a long path may be awkward on a short one, and a mode with dense waves may reward control differently from a boss-focused stage. Compare candidates using the role, stage, build cost and likelihood that the unit will remain in your intended team.

Role What it contributes When to prioritize it Questions before investing
Damage Reliable single-target or area damage that removes enemies before they reach the exit. When ordinary waves survive long enough to overwhelm your placements or a boss outlasts your available damage windows. Can it attack the enemy types in the stage? Does its range fit the map? Can you afford the upgrades needed for its damage to come online?
Crowd control Slows, stuns or otherwise manages enemy movement so damage has more time to work. When fast enemies leak, groups arrive together, or your damage is adequate only if enemies remain in range. Does the stage allow enough time for the effect to matter? Is the control reliable, and does it complement rather than delay your main damage plan?
Economy support Improves the resources available during a run, allowing earlier or larger upgrades. When a stage is lost because your team cannot reach key upgrades in time, especially on maps with room for a longer build-up. What is the payback point? Can the unit be placed safely without sacrificing early defense?

A balanced roster does not require one permanent ratio of these roles. Start with enough damage to survive the first waves, add control when the map or enemy speed demands it, and use economy support only when the stage gives that investment time to pay back. The June 23, 2026 beginner guide presents these broad role categories and recommends saving upgrade materials for units that will stay useful; it does not establish a current list of named winners. See the progression and starter-tips guide.

How to decide what a unit is worth building

Before spending scarce materials, evaluate a unit in the context of your next goal.

  • Stage fit: A unit’s range, targeting and attack pattern must match the map’s path length and enemy behavior.
  • Team fit: Ask whether it fills a missing role or duplicates a job you already perform well.
  • Upgrade timing: A unit that is excellent only after expensive upgrades may be a poor first investment if it cannot help you clear the next stage.
  • Future use: Prefer a unit that can contribute across several Story stages or modes when you do not yet know your long-term roster.
  • Opportunity cost: Every Gem, Stat Chip or reroll spent now is unavailable for another unit. Write down the alternative you are giving up.

Run a unit for several clears before judging it. A single defeat can reflect placement or upgrade timing rather than a weak unit. Conversely, a unit that succeeds only on one map should not automatically receive your best trait resources.

Summons and Gem management

Summoning is exciting because it immediately expands your options, but early Gems are also your flexibility. The safest approach is intentional spending:

  1. Define the gap. Decide whether your roster lacks dependable damage, control or economy support.
  2. Read the live banner. Confirm what units are available, how long the banner lasts and which in-game rules apply. Do not rely on an old screenshot for rates or pity.
  3. Set a stopping point. Keep a reserve for the next progression need instead of treating every Gem as part of one session.
  4. Inspect the result. Check the new unit in inventory, including any trait it arrived with, before deciding whether it replaces an existing slot.
  5. Test before upgrading deeply. A summon can be useful without being your permanent carry; use a few Story clears to establish that it solves your problem.

The available fan guidance specifically cautions against spending all Gems on the first banner. It does not verify current summon probabilities, pity thresholds, guarantees or the exact cost of a multi-summon. Those values are patch-sensitive, so use the banner’s live information and official announcements when they are available.

Traits: what to do and what not to assume

Traits are passive modifiers attached to units. They can influence how a unit performs, but a trait is valuable only when it supports that unit’s role and your stage plan. A high-sounding label does not compensate for a unit that cannot cover the map or a team that lacks another essential role.

Where rerolls happen

The community-maintained Traits page identifies Mandra in the lobby as the Traits NPC. Players use a Trait Reroll there, and the same page says a unit may be summoned with a trait already attached. Because the page is community maintained, confirm the NPC’s current location and the button labels in your live lobby. Check the Traits reference.

When to spend a Trait Reroll

  • Early game: Keep rerolls while you are still replacing most of your roster. A trait on a temporary unit has limited value if that unit leaves your team after the next summon.
  • Established unit: Consider a reroll when the unit consistently fills a role in your Story progression and you understand what improvement would help it.
  • Specific stage problem: Reroll only when the potential benefit addresses a demonstrated issue, such as insufficient damage or a range-related weakness.
  • Resource reserve: Maintain enough rerolls for a future core unit. Do not consume the entire reserve chasing a particular outcome.

Exact trait odds, pity behavior and the value of individual named traits are not reliably established here. Do not treat a percentage from an old guide, video or community comment as a current guarantee. Read the live reroll screen and any current official update notes before committing.

Evolution and the Memoria question

Evolution is an upgrade path for units, but recipes, material requirements and interactions can change. The June 23, 2026 fan guide reports that Update 13.5 automatically granted designated Memoria when a unit evolved. That is an update-specific community report, not a rule you should assume still applies on October 16, 2026. Review the guide’s evolution discussion, then verify the current behavior in the evolution screen and official update notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this checklist before evolving:

  1. Open the unit’s current evolution panel and read every listed material and prerequisite.
  2. Confirm whether the evolution consumes, grants or changes Memoria in the current version.
  3. Check what happens to the unit’s level, trait, upgrades and team placement after evolution.
  4. Compare the immediate power gain with the cost of evolving a different unit that fills a more urgent role.
  5. Keep a reserve for the next Story stage unless the evolution is necessary for a clear progression wall.

Never farm a historical recipe from memory. If the panel and a dated official announcement disagree with an old guide, follow the live game and the newest announcement.

A practical resource budget

Different resources have different opportunity costs. The following plan is deliberately conservative because exact quantities and prices are not established for the current patch.

Resource Early priority Hold it for Common mistake
Gems Targeted summons that address a real roster gap. A banner or unit that fits your intended team, plus flexibility for the next stage. Spending the entire balance on the first available banner.
Trait Rerolls Usually save them while your roster is unsettled. A unit you expect to keep and a specific, observed performance problem. Rerolling every new summon before testing its base kit.
Stat Chips Use only when the unit is already part of your working team. Core units that will remain relevant across planned stages or modes. Distributing small amounts across many units and improving none enough to matter.
Evolution materials Collect while progressing, but do not assume an old recipe. An evolution that removes a known stage barrier or strengthens a long-term core. Spending materials before checking the live prerequisites and Memoria behavior.

This is a decision framework, not an announced economy table. The game’s current inventory, summon and evolution panels determine the actual costs.

How to progress through Story stages

Story Mode gives you a repeatable way to turn your roster into knowledge. Advance when you can clear a stage consistently, not merely when you get lucky once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before pressing Start

  • Check the enemy path and identify where a long-range unit can cover multiple lanes or bends.
  • Choose an opening placement that can handle the first wave without exhausting the currency needed for your next upgrade.
  • Bring at least one answer to the stage’s most dangerous enemy behavior, whether that is speed, numbers or durability.
  • Leave room for a late placement or upgrade rather than filling every slot immediately.

During the run

  1. Stabilize the first wave with the least expensive reliable damage option.
  2. Upgrade the unit that is already covering the largest threat before adding a redundant placement.
  3. Add crowd control when enemies begin leaving the damage zone or arriving in groups.
  4. Use economy support only after the opening defense is safe enough to survive its payback period.
  5. Pause between waves, if the mode allows it, to identify which leak or survival issue caused the previous problem.

After a clear or loss

Write one sentence describing the result: for example, the team handled ordinary waves but lost to a fast group, or damage was adequate but upgrades arrived too late. That sentence tells you whether to change a unit, a trait, a placement or your spending plan. It also prevents a string of impulsive summons.

What to do after finishing Story content

Finishing a Story segment does not mean every unit deserves investment. Treat the next phase as specialization:

  • Re-test your core team on harder difficulties or available modes. A unit that was sufficient for early waves may need support when enemy health or speed increases.
  • Fill the largest role gap. If damage is already comfortable, a control or economy option may improve more clears than another damage dealer.
  • Reserve resources for mode-specific teams. Do not dismantle a reliable Story squad just to copy a community recommendation aimed at a different mode.
  • Review traits after the roster settles. Trait Rerolls and Stat Chips have more value when you know which units will remain in your lineup.
  • Check current announcements before farming. New updates can alter evolution, Memoria, banners and rewards, making an old route inefficient.

Community questions often sound like “What should I do now?” or “What units should I get?” The useful answer depends on the stage you can clear, the role you lack and the resources you have left—not on a universal named-unit ranking.

Codes, rates and other details that require a live check

  • Active code strings, expiration dates and reward amounts.
  • Summon rates, pity thresholds and guarantees.
  • Exact level requirements or stage unlock conditions.
  • Trait probabilities or claims that a particular trait is guaranteed.
  • Evolution recipes, Memoria grants and ascension interactions.
  • Current unit rankings or statements that one unit is best in every mode.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes

Spending every Gem immediately

Symptom: You obtain several units but cannot respond to the next banner or progression wall. Fix: Keep a reserve, summon to solve a defined role gap and test each result before further spending.

Rerolling temporary units

Symptom: Trait Rerolls disappear while your team changes every few stages. Fix: Save rerolls for a unit that has proven useful across multiple clears and for which you can name the desired improvement.

Building only one role

Symptom: High damage still loses to fast groups, or control stalls enemies without enough damage to finish them. Fix: Compare the loss condition with the role table and add the missing function instead of duplicating the strongest-looking unit.

Trusting an old evolution recipe

Symptom: You farm materials that the current panel does not request, or Memoria behaves differently than expected. Fix: Read the current evolution screen and verify the latest update information before farming.

Using a code list as a guarantee

Symptom: A code is expired, invalid or gives a different reward. Fix: Treat dated community lists as leads; confirm eligibility and rewards in the live redemption UI.

Replacing a unit after one bad run

Symptom: Your roster changes faster than you can learn it. Fix: Repeat the stage with a different placement or upgrade order, then decide whether the unit or the strategy caused the loss.

A compact decision tree for your next action

  1. Can you clear your current Story stage? If no, diagnose the leak: damage, control, economy or placement.
  2. Do you have a unit that addresses that diagnosis? If yes, test a new placement or upgrade order before summoning.
  3. If not, do you have enough Gems for a targeted summon without emptying your reserve? If yes, read the live banner and summon deliberately; if no, keep progressing where possible and save.
  4. Is the unit solving the problem likely to remain on your team? If yes, consider Stat Chips, Trait Rerolls or evolution after checking current requirements; if no, delay scarce upgrades.
  5. Did a patch or event just change the system? Re-check codes, rates, traits, evolution and Memoria before repeating an old route.

This process turns “what should I do now?” into a measurable choice: identify the failure, select the least expensive fix, test it, and preserve resources for the next decision.
