There is no single anime that every newcomer should watch first. Start with the kinds of stories you already enjoy, then choose an approachable title you can find in your region and check its audio and subtitle options before pressing play.

Where do I even start with anime?

Think of anime as a broad medium, not one genre or one kind of show. It includes action, romance, fantasy, comedy, sports stories, science fiction and quieter character drama. Some series are aimed at younger viewers, while others explore more mature themes; check a title’s description and rating if that matters to you.

Your existing tastes are a better starting point than a prescribed watch order. If you like superhero adventures, fantasy journeys, competitive sports or gentle, low-stakes stories, look for anime that promises the same kind of experience. Genre labels are useful browsing filters, not a complete map of everything anime can be.

What should I watch first?

Choose a story type first, then treat example titles as suggestions—not a universal ranking. Crunchyroll News’ beginner guide, published in 2023 and updated in 2026, uses these examples for different interests:

#1 Best Overall
Monster collection 1 [Blu-ray]
  • English dub, Japanese language, English subtitles
What you enjoy Example to explore Why it may fit
Superheroes and action My Hero Academia A superhero-action example in Crunchyroll News’ beginner recommendations.
Fantasy Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End A fantasy example in the same guide.
Sports drama Chihayafuru A competitive sports-drama example centered on karuta, a Japanese card game.

These recommendations reflect one publisher’s editorial choices, not a consensus about the best first anime. If none of those premises appeals to you, browse by another interest—such as romance, comedy, science fiction or a grounded drama—instead.

How much time do you want to commit?

Decide whether you want a contained viewing experience or an ongoing one. A feature film or a shorter series can be a low-commitment way to try anime; a long-running or multi-season show asks for more time. Runtime and episode counts differ by title, so check the listing rather than assuming a genre tells you how long a show is.

Big O The Complete Series [Blu-ray]
  • English dub, Japanese langauge, English subtitles
  • Want a complete outing? Look for a film or a series whose listing shows a manageable episode count.
  • Prefer to watch at your own pace? An older or completed series may suit you better than following a show as new episodes arrive.
  • Want something airing now? A seasonal listing can help you discover current releases, but availability depends on the service and your region.

How to find a show you can actually watch

  1. Pick a story preference. Start with a genre or mood you already like, such as action, fantasy, sports, romance, comedy or quieter drama.
  2. Choose a manageable title. Consider whether you want a film, a shorter series, a completed show or a currently airing one.
  3. Search the service you already use. Browse its genre or category pages, or search for the specific title. Streaming catalogs differ by platform and country, and can change, so do not assume an example is available where you live.
  4. Open the title page before starting. Check the available audio and subtitle tracks for that show in your region. Language options vary from title to title; a dub or a particular subtitle language is not guaranteed.
  5. Choose the track you prefer and start watching. If the listing does not show an option you need, try another title rather than assuming the whole catalog offers the same language choices.

Subtitles or dubbed audio?

Neither option is required for a first anime. Some viewers prefer Japanese audio with subtitles; others would rather watch with a dub when one is available. Streaming help pages explain how to select available audio and subtitle tracks, but the choices depend on the individual show and region. Check the title’s playback or language controls rather than relying on a service-wide assumption.

What if the first show is not for me?

Try a different kind of story before deciding anime as a whole is not your thing. A viewer who dislikes a high-action series might enjoy a comedy, a sports drama or a quieter character story. The medium covers many styles and audiences, so one mismatch is not a reliable test of all anime.

If you want a broader view of the medium’s production industry, the Association of Japanese Animations publishes annual industry reports and English summaries. Its 2025 English summary listing is dated March 26, 2026; the existence of these reports does not point to a single recommended viewing path.
