Andromeda is an experimental JavaScript and TypeScript runtime built in Rust. It combines the Nova JavaScript engine with Oxc tooling and advertises direct TypeScript execution, web APIs, GPU-backed canvas graphics and an integrated developer toolchain. Those features make it interesting for scripts, learning and visual experiments, but the project’s current guidance does not recommend it for critical production workloads.

What is Andromeda?

Bytes introduced Andromeda in issue #424, published September 17, 2025, under the heading “Rusty runtimes.” Despite that wording, the subject is not a general survey of Rust asynchronous runtimes: Andromeda is a JavaScript and TypeScript runtime implemented in Rust. The project builds on Nova, a JavaScript engine designed to be lightweight and modular for embedding in Rust projects, and uses Oxc tooling.

The project’s README describes Andromeda as a modular runtime with extensions and shell integration. Its pitch is to bring scripting, web-facing APIs, graphics and developer tools together rather than focus only on running server-side JavaScript.

What can it do?

Bytes highlighted running .ts files directly, web-standard APIs including Fetch and Web Crypto, a WGPU-backed Canvas API, and an integrated developer toolchain. Direct TypeScript execution removes a separate build step for the workflows the runtime supports; it does not, by itself, establish compatibility with every TypeScript feature or package.

The current project README documents a broader set of capabilities. These are project-described features, not independent findings about production readiness or compatibility with other runtimes.

  • Language and modules: zero-configuration TypeScript and import maps.
  • Network and storage: an HTTP server, Fetch, Web Crypto, SQLite, filesystem access and web storage.
  • Concurrency: workers.
  • Graphics and interface: GPU-accelerated canvas and optional native windowing.
  • Development: bundled developer tools, extensions and shell integration.

Bytes suggested the feature set could suit scripts, utilities, lightweight services and GPU-powered visuals. Its issue also used sub-10ms startup language, but did not provide a benchmark methodology; that figure should be treated as the newsletter’s claim, not an independently verified result.

Is Andromeda ready for production?

The Andromeda FAQ reviewed for this article identifies release 0.1.10 as current and describes the runtime as actively developed. Since that release identifier can change, check the project’s official FAQ for the current status. The FAQ recommends Andromeda for experiments, scripts and learning, rather than critical production workloads.

The project README puts the limitation plainly: “While functional, it’s not yet recommended for production use.” Treat the advertised APIs and tools as capabilities the project documents, not a guarantee that every feature is complete, stable or compatible with applications written for another runtime.

Why do Nova’s limitations matter?

Andromeda relies on Nova for JavaScript execution, so the engine’s maturity affects what developers can expect from the runtime. Nova’s documentation describes an embeddable, modular engine while also acknowledging gaps in ECMAScript support.

In a March 15, 2026 announcement, Nova maintainer Aapo Alasuutari said the engine was not fast and noted RegExp conformance problems, including unsupported lookarounds and backreferences. These are reasons to test the exact language features an application needs and to avoid assuming that Andromeda will match established runtimes in speed or compatibility. The available project materials do not provide a fair, independently measured benchmark comparison.

Who should consider it?

Andromeda is most compelling for developers curious about a Rust-built runtime, people learning how JavaScript engines and runtime APIs fit together, and experimenters who want to try TypeScript, web APIs or canvas graphics in one environment. Its documented SQLite, worker and HTTP-server features may also be worth exploring in prototypes, provided the project’s development status fits the risk.

For a critical service or a toolchain that depends on broad ECMAScript and package compatibility, the current guidance and Nova’s documented gaps call for caution. Evaluate the specific APIs, syntax, dependencies and failure-recovery needs of the application before relying on Andromeda.

How does it fit beside established runtimes?

The useful distinction is not a speed ranking: the reviewed materials do not establish one. Andromeda’s stated niche is a modular, Rust-based runtime combining direct TypeScript execution, web-style APIs, graphics support and developer tools. Its active-development status and Nova’s compatibility limitations distinguish its current risk profile from the expectations developers may bring to mature runtimes.

For any project choice, compare the runtime against the actual workload: required APIs and packages, language-feature compatibility, graphics needs, tooling, and the consequences of relying on software still in active development. A feature list alone cannot settle those questions.
