Short answer: Ray-Ban Meta is the practical buy-now choice. It is a shipping camera-and-audio product with published phone requirements, Meta AI, open-ear speakers, and an external capture LED. Android XR is Google’s platform for headsets and glasses, developed with Samsung and Qualcomm. Google has demonstrated Gemini on prototype glasses and Samsung has announced an Android XR roadmap, but no single consumer Android XR glasses model yet has settled specifications, price, launch date, battery rating, camera details, or phone-compatibility list.
That difference matters more than any assistant comparison. You can evaluate and purchase Ray-Ban Meta today; you can evaluate Android XR’s direction, but you must wait for a specific manufacturer’s product page before treating its hardware or privacy behavior as final.
What each platform actually is
Android XR is an operating-system platform, not one finished pair of glasses
Google describes Android XR as a platform for headsets and glasses, built with Samsung and Qualcomm. Google intends Android apps distributed through Google Play to work on the platform and presents privacy for both users and nearby people as a design goal.

Ray-Ban Meta is a currently purchasable product family

Display capability: do not assume Android XR glasses will look like a phone in front of your eyes
Android XR covers both headsets and glasses, so the platform name alone does not tell you whether a particular product has a transparent display, a camera viewfinder, audio-only interaction or another design. Google’s demonstrations show Gemini experiences on glasses, but they do not publish the specifications needed to confirm a consumer model’s field of view, optical technology, resolution, brightness, text legibility, refresh rate or all-day power draw.
Ray-Ban Meta’s documented feature set is easier to characterize: camera capture, open-ear audio, microphones, wireless connectivity and assistant functions. The published specifications do not describe an in-lens display. If you need navigation arrows, live captions or persistent visual overlays, wait for a product listing that explicitly names those capabilities rather than inferring them from the Android XR brand.

Ray-Ban Meta camera specifications
Ray-Ban’s current specifications list 12 MP ultra-wide cameras on camera-equipped models. Still images can be captured at 3024 × 4032, and newer models are listed with up to 3K Ultra HD video. “Up to” is important: resolution, frame rate, stabilization, recording duration and available modes can differ between generations and software versions. Check the exact model’s specification before comparing it with a phone or action camera.
The glasses use open-ear speakers, allowing ambient sound to remain audible while music, calls or assistant responses play. Five- or six-microphone arrays are model-dependent. Open-ear audio is useful for short prompts and notifications, but it does not provide the isolation of in-ear headphones; people nearby may also hear sound in quiet surroundings.

Android XR hardware is still a product-by-product question
Google’s platform announcements do not provide a final Android XR glasses camera resolution, microphone count, speaker design, storage capacity, water rating or charging specification. Samsung’s announcement identifies Galaxy XR as the first product built on Android XR and says the wider roadmap includes AI glasses. That establishes an ecosystem direction, not one finalized glasses model. Treat every future device as a separate specification check.
AI assistants and app ecosystems
What you can expect from Meta AI now
Ray-Ban Meta integrates Meta AI into a wearable that already has cameras, microphones and speakers. The assistant’s practical value comes from hands-free questions, voice interaction and actions tied to supported services. The glasses’ documented app support includes Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Shazam. Availability can depend on region, account, phone and software version.
Do not read the app list as a promise that every phone feature works without a phone. Ray-Ban’s FAQ requires a compatible smartphone, wireless internet, a Meta account and the Meta AI app. The phone and network remain part of the operating system for setup, updates and many connected functions.
What Gemini on Android XR means today
Google has shown Gemini experiences on Android XR glasses and has used trusted testers to gather feedback. That supports the conclusion that Google is building a glasses-oriented Gemini experience, not the conclusion that a retail pair can perform a specific task today. Final voice commands, multimodal features, offline behavior, supported languages, account requirements and subscription conditions have not been established in the available product announcements.
Therefore, “Which has better AI?” has no fair benchmark answer yet. Meta AI is the available assistant on a shipping product. Gemini has the stronger announced connection to Google’s Android and Google Play ecosystem, but the glasses hardware and final software package are still unresolved.

Phone and operating-system compatibility
Ray-Ban Meta requirements
Before buying, confirm all four prerequisites: a compatible smartphone, wireless internet, a Meta account and the Meta AI app. Ray-Ban’s FAQ lists Android 10 and later or iOS 14.4 and later. Those version floors are not a guarantee that every phone running that operating-system version is supported; Ray-Ban’s official compatibility document shows that supported phone models vary.

- Identify the exact glasses model. Generation, camera configuration and regional availability can change the compatibility list.
- Check the supported-phone document for your model. Do not rely only on the Android or iOS version number.
- Update the phone’s operating system and install the Meta AI app. Use the account you intend to keep associated with the glasses.
- Confirm wireless internet access. Setup and connected assistant functions require network access; a phone that is technically compatible but offline will not provide the full experience.
- Review account and app permissions before pairing. Camera, microphone, Bluetooth and network permissions affect what the glasses can do.
Android XR compatibility is not yet a purchase-time checklist
Google says Android applications from Google Play are intended to work on Android XR, but that is a platform goal rather than a final glasses compatibility matrix. Until a manufacturer publishes a specific model page, you cannot reliably determine the required Android version, whether an iPhone can pair, which Google account tier is needed, how much phone processing is required or whether a particular carrier and region are supported.
Battery, storage and charging expectations
Ray-Ban’s battery claims are model-specific. Ray-Ban lists up to eight hours on a single charge for Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2. That is a manufacturer claim, not a universal runtime: camera recording, calls, music volume, assistant use, network conditions and temperature can shorten it. Camera-equipped models also have model-dependent storage, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth specifications, so check the listing for the exact generation.
Ray-Ban also lists up to 12 hours for camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio. That figure applies to the audio product, not to camera-equipped Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Keeping these products separate avoids comparing an audio-only endurance claim with a camera model.
Android XR glasses have no settled battery figure in the available announcements. Display brightness, continuous perception, camera use and wireless radios could materially affect endurance, but those engineering trade-offs should not be turned into a guessed number. Wait for a published capacity, runtime test conditions and charging method.

Privacy: recording indicators, data handling and bystanders
What the Ray-Ban capture LED tells people
Ray-Ban says an external capture LED signals when photos or video are being captured. Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance says taking a photo or recording video activates notification and capture LEDs. The light is a bystander signal: it communicates that capture is occurring, but it does not guarantee that everyone nearby sees it, understands it or agrees with the recording.
Use the LED as one part of responsible behavior, not as a substitute for consent. Ask before recording in private, workplace, school or sensitive settings, follow local recording and biometric-privacy laws, and stop when someone objects. A visible indicator also does not answer where footage or voice data are processed, how long they are retained or which account controls apply.
Account and cloud questions for Ray-Ban Meta
The required Meta account and Meta AI app mean that account settings are part of the privacy decision. Review permissions for the phone, microphone, camera, Bluetooth and network access; understand which features require an online connection; and check the controls presented in the current app and account documentation. The available product information establishes the account and connectivity requirements, but it does not provide a complete, model-by-model retention schedule for every photo, video, voice request or assistant interaction. Do not assume that an LED means processing is entirely local.
What is established about Android XR privacy
Android XR’s perception-tracking help information says Android XR information is used in accordance with Google’s Privacy Policy. Google’s I/O announcement says feedback from trusted testers was being gathered specifically to address privacy for users and people around them. Those statements document a policy framework and development approach. They are not an independent privacy audit and do not establish final glasses behavior, indicator design, recording controls, retention periods or bystander-notification rules.

Prescription lenses, frame choices and durability
Ray-Ban Meta is a product family rather than one frame. Prescription eligibility, lens options, colors, sizing and regional stock depend on the specific frame and listing. Confirm that your prescription is accepted, that the selected lens type supports the camera-and-audio model you want, and that replacement or servicing options are available in your country. IPX4 water resistance is listed for applicable models; that rating does not make the glasses waterproof, so verify the exact model and keep them away from submersion.
Android XR has no finalized glasses frame or prescription matrix in the available announcements. A future model may impose limits based on optical hardware, weight, thermal design or regional certification, but those are not published facts for a shipping product. Do not order accessories or lenses for a platform concept before a manufacturer identifies the model.
Which should you buy?
Choose Ray-Ban Meta now if you need a working product
- You want camera capture and open-ear audio in a product you can purchase and set up now.
- You use a phone that appears on the supported compatibility list and can meet the Android 10-or-later or iOS 14.4-or-later requirement.
- You accept the need for wireless internet, a Meta account and the Meta AI app.
- You want a documented external capture LED and are prepared to manage recording etiquette and account permissions.
- You can choose among current frame, lens and generation options after checking regional availability.
When comparing listings, verify the generation, whether it has a camera, the stated video resolution, battery claim, storage, water rating, prescription support and phone compatibility. “Ray-Ban Meta” is not one unchanging specification sheet.

- You specifically want Google’s Gemini and Android ecosystem direction and can wait for final hardware.
- You need a display or visual overlay and are unwilling to buy a product whose published feature set is audio-and-camera focused.
- You want to evaluate Google’s final privacy controls, perception behavior and bystander indicators before committing.
- You need confirmed battery life, prescription support, iPhone compatibility, price or launch timing that has not yet been published.
When an Android XR glasses product is announced, evaluate its own specification page rather than relying on the platform name. Confirm the display type, camera and microphone hardware, recording indicator, battery test conditions, charging system, phone requirements, supported countries, app availability, account policy and repair or prescription options.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying on a platform announcement alone: Android XR is an ecosystem roadmap; it is not a single retail glasses model.
- Assuming Android version equals compatibility: Ray-Ban’s supported phone models vary, even within the listed Android and iOS version floors.
- Calling a prototype a display product: Gemini demonstrations do not publish a final optical specification.

Android XR is the platform to watch if Gemini, Google Play integration or possible future glasses capabilities matter more than immediate ownership. Until a manufacturer publishes a final Android XR glasses model, compare promises as roadmap information—not as settled specifications.
