To set up a separate Work Profile on an Android phone, first ask your employer’s IT team which enrollment method it supports. Your organization may start setup when you add a managed Google account, or it may require an approved enterprise management app. Follow the prompts from that route; Android does not offer a universal self-service setup that works independently of your employer.
What an Android Work Profile separates
A Work Profile creates a managed space for work apps and their data, separate from your personal apps and data. Work apps usually show a briefcase badge, and may appear together in a Work tab in the app drawer. In the standard Work Profile model, your organization manages work apps and data while your personal apps, files, and usage remain private. Company-owned devices or other management modes can apply some policies to the personal profile or the whole device, so the exact boundary depends on how the organization manages the phone. Google’s overview of Work Profile features explains the separation and management model.
Check eligibility and the enrollment route
Before changing settings, confirm with IT that your organization supports Work Profile enrollment and ask which steps to use. Google’s Android Enterprise guidance lists these minimums: personally owned devices running Android 5.0 or later, and company-owned devices running Android 8.0 or later; both require at least 2 GB of RAM. Meeting those minimums does not guarantee enrollment: the phone, Android version, and organization’s management setup must also be supported. Android Enterprise’s device-support guidance has the requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Google Workspace or Cloud Identity: Your administrator may allow setup by adding your managed work account and following the device prompts.
- Another enterprise mobility management provider: IT may direct you to install and open its approved management app, then enroll from there.
Do not select a management app on your own. The organization determines which enrollment route and app are authorized. Device screens differ by manufacturer and Android version. Google’s Workspace walkthrough is specifically for Pixel phones running Android 8.0 Oreo or later; it warns that other devices may have different steps. Google Workspace’s Android setup guide describes that example.

Set up the Work Profile
- Ask IT for the enrollment instructions. Confirm whether you should add a managed Google account or use a particular EMM app, and whether the phone must meet any organization-specific requirements.
- Start with the route IT specifies. For a managed Google account, open the account setup or sign-in flow your administrator provides and follow the prompts. If IT specifies another provider, get its app from Google Play, open it, and begin enrollment as directed. Do not install a different app if the expected one is unavailable; ask IT for help.
- Accept profile setup and security prompts. On Google’s Pixel example, Android Device Policy may be installed when prompted. Continue through the profile setup, accept the organization’s management terms, and set a screen lock if required. Other phones can present different wording or screens.
- Install or open approved work apps. Apps may be offered during setup or distributed later through managed Google Play or the organization’s management system. If expected apps are missing, contact IT rather than downloading substitutes.
- Check that enrollment finished. Look for the Work tab or work apps marked with a briefcase badge. If the icons are gray, the Work Profile may be paused.
Find and pause work apps
After enrollment, work apps are generally grouped in the Work tab of the app drawer, though the exact location varies by phone. You can pause or resume the profile from that tab or from a supported Work Profile tile in Quick Settings. Pausing stops work apps from running and prevents their work notifications until the profile is turned back on. On company-owned phones, an administrator may limit how long the profile can stay paused. See Google’s instructions for pausing or turning on a Work Profile.
Understand privacy, sharing, and removal
What your organization can manage
In the standard personal-device Work Profile arrangement, the organization manages the work profile rather than your personal apps and data. Administrators can enforce work-profile security policies and remove work data. On a company-owned phone, management can extend to some personal-profile settings or the overall device. Ask your administrator what applies to your specific device and ownership arrangement. Android Enterprise’s management-feature guidance describes these distinctions.

Removing the profile
Removing a Work Profile from a personal phone deletes the apps and data stored locally in that profile. Before removal, sync or back up anything you need according to your employer’s policy. A factory reset is broader: it deletes both work and personal data. For removal steps and consequences, consult Google’s Work Profile overview and your IT team.

Troubleshoot a missing profile or apps
- No Work tab or profile settings: Check that the organization supports Work Profile enrollment and that setup completed. Android 14 and later may expose searchable Work Profile settings, but the navigation varies by device.
- No work apps appear: Your administrator may need to approve or distribute them through managed Google Play or the EMM system. Ask IT to check the assignment; do not install a different management app.
- Work icons are gray or notifications stopped: The profile may be paused. Turn it back on from the Work tab or a supported Quick Settings control.
- Setup screens do not match the instructions: The documented Workspace flow is Pixel-specific, and manufacturers and organizations can use different prompts. Stop if you are unsure what a management permission means and confirm the next step with IT.
