Android ranks first worldwide by smartphone sales, but the leader depends on the market. In Counterpoint Research’s Q2 2026 smartphone sales-share figures, Android had 75% globally, ahead of iOS at 20% and HarmonyOS (listed as “Harmony” by Counterpoint) at 5%. The United States was nearly even, while Android led in China and India. These are shares of phones sold during that quarter—not shares of all active phones or people using each system.
How the operating systems rank by smartphone sales
Counterpoint Research’s Q2 2026 figures rank the platforms by their share of smartphone sales in that quarter. The measure is useful for comparing new-phone purchases over the same period; it does not show how many people already use each operating system.
| Market | Q2 2026 smartphone sales share | Sales ranking |
|---|---|---|
| Worldwide | Android 75%; iOS 20%; HarmonyOS (listed as Harmony) 5% | Android, iOS, HarmonyOS |
| United States | iOS 51%; Android 49%; HarmonyOS not separately listed | iOS, Android |
| China | Android 58%; HarmonyOS (listed as Harmony) 24%; iOS 18% | Android, HarmonyOS, iOS |
| India | Android 91%; iOS 9%; HarmonyOS not separately listed | Android, iOS |
Source for all table figures: Counterpoint Research’s Q2 2026 country sales-share table and global sales-share report. Counterpoint does not list HarmonyOS separately in its US or India figures, so its omission should not be read as a zero share.
What the rankings show in each market
Worldwide: Android leads new-phone sales
Android accounted for 75% of global smartphone sales in Q2 2026, with iOS at 20% and HarmonyOS at 5%, according to Counterpoint Research. The global result puts Android well ahead in sales for the quarter, but it is not a count of installed devices. Counterpoint links iOS’s global sales share to demand for the iPhone 17 series and the launch of iPhone 17e. It also reports that global smartphone sales declined 11% year over year in Q2 2026; that is market context, not a different denominator for the operating-system shares.

China: HarmonyOS is second
China is the market where Counterpoint reports HarmonyOS separately as a substantial category: Android had 58% of Q2 2026 smartphone sales, HarmonyOS 24%, and iOS 18%. The ranking there is Android first, HarmonyOS second, and iOS third.

Smartphone sales, web usage, and installed base answer different questions. Sales share describes phones purchased in a stated period. Web-usage share reflects activity measured through web traffic and can be affected by how often different devices browse. Installed base would describe devices currently in use; the cited figures do not provide a directly comparable global ranking for that measure.

For a separate web-usage measure, StatCounter Global Stats reported Android at 67.61% and iOS at 32.36% of worldwide mobile web usage in August 2026. HarmonyOS was not separately listed in the opened table. This monthly web-usage snapshot is a different metric and period from Counterpoint’s Q2 sales ranking, so it should not be combined with or substituted for those sales figures. See StatCounter’s worldwide mobile operating-system data.
StatCounter’s all-device web-usage figures for September 2026 are broader still: Android 42.54%, Windows 28.98%, and iOS 19.45%. Those figures include desktops and other device types, so they do not rank smartphone operating systems alone. See StatCounter’s all-device data.

Which system has the largest market share?
If “market share” means Q2 2026 smartphone sales worldwide, Android is the clear leader at 75%. If it means mobile web usage worldwide in August 2026, Android also leads, at 67.61%, in StatCounter’s measure. Those answers do not establish which operating system has the largest installed base, and the sales and usage percentages should not be treated as interchangeable.
