If your Android phone’s default camera makes video look overprocessed, Native Camera is an alternative worth checking. The N8 Media app offers a different capture path and manual controls, but neither the developer’s claims nor the available evidence establishes that it improves video on every phone. Compatibility and results depend on the device.
What is Native Camera, and what does it change?
Native Camera is an Android video camera app from N8 Media. The developer says it can bypass some manufacturer-supplied camera processing and give users more control over capture. That describes the app’s approach; it is not an independently measured guarantee of better-looking footage.
N8 Media positions the app for Pixel phones, while its Google Play listing also cautions that device capabilities vary. In particular, some phones limit the camera access available to third-party apps. Check the listing and the app’s behavior on your own device rather than assuming every feature will be available.
Which recording formats and controls are listed?
The Google Play listing describes 8-bit SDR recording as available, with an in-app upgrade, Native Camera Pro, for additional features. The developer lists these Pro options for compatible devices:

These are listed capabilities, not a promise that every Android phone supports them. The listing’s compatibility warning is explicit: “Some devices may not support every function, some devices do not give full camera access to third parties.” The app’s actual choices may therefore differ by phone.
How can you decide whether it suits your phone?
- Check the current Google Play listing for your device. Look for the recording modes and controls you need, and note which are included in Native Camera Pro.
- Confirm camera access and compatibility. A feature appearing in the listing does not establish support on every model; the developer warns that some phones restrict third-party camera access.
- Try a short recording before relying on it. Compare footage from Native Camera with your phone’s default camera in the situations that matter to you, such as indoor light or moving subjects. This is a practical check, not a published independent test result.
- Review the output and workflow. Confirm that the recording format, available controls, file location, and playback or editing support fit your needs before using the app for an important shoot.
Where does Native Camera save video, and what does its privacy policy say?
The Google Play listing says recordings are saved locally in the device’s DCIM/NativeCamera directory. N8 Media’s privacy policy, effective July 7, 2026, says captured media is stored on the device and is not sent by the app to the developer’s servers or to third parties. The policy also says the app does not collect analytics or usage data, use advertising or tracking SDKs, or create accounts.

The policy distinguishes the app’s behavior from optional backups: operating-system settings or other apps may back up a camera roll. Whether recordings are uploaded through those separate services depends on the settings and services you use.

No independent comparison or benchmark in the available sources quantifies an improvement in video quality. The phrase “by leaps and bounds” should not be read as a measured result. Native Camera’s stated appeal is an alternate processing path and additional control; whether that produces footage you prefer depends on your phone, settings, and use case.
