Android tablets are more compelling in 2026 because software is beginning to catch up with larger, more capable hardware. Google says Android 16 desktop windowing—multiple movable, resizable app windows on one screen—is planned to roll out later in 2026 on compatible devices. Meanwhile, Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab S12 models target creative and productivity work, while Lenovo’s Tab Plus Gen 2 is built around media and flexible viewing. The key caveat: features and availability depend on the exact tablet, region, and rollout date.
What makes Android tablets more interesting in 2026?
The change is not one universal new feature or a single tablet that suits everyone. It is the combination of large-screen software improvements and devices designed for distinct jobs. Android 16’s announced desktop windowing could make a compatible tablet more useful for work, while new hardware ranges from Samsung’s premium pen-focused tablets to Lenovo’s entertainment-oriented model.
That distinction matters: an Android tablet’s capabilities still depend on its model, software version, accessories, and region. Google describes desktop windowing as a planned rollout to compatible devices later in 2026, not a feature already available on every Android tablet. Google’s Android 16 announcement also describes other large-screen improvements as forthcoming.

What Android 16 desktop windowing could change
Google says desktop windowing was developed with Samsung for large-screen devices. It adds another way to work beyond a single full-screen app or conventional split screen: users can open multiple app windows, move them, and resize them on one display. That could help when a task involves keeping a document visible beside a browser, or referring to one app while working in another.

Google also mentions custom keyboard shortcuts and taskbar overflow as forthcoming, with external-display enhancements planned for future updates. These are rollout-dependent capabilities, so check the specific tablet and its current software before buying on the assumption that they are available. For occasional browsing and video, windowing may matter little; it is more relevant if you regularly switch among apps or want a tablet to handle some laptop-like tasks.
Three 2026 tablet options for different workloads
Samsung Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra and S12+: creative work and productivity
Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra and Tab S12+ on September 30, 2026. The company lists a 14.6-inch display and a 5.1 mm profile for the Ultra, and a 12.6-inch display for the Plus. Samsung says the series includes an S Pen. Its US launch announcement describes creative and productivity software, including Photoshop preloaded on the series, as well as promotional trials; bundled apps and trial terms can differ by region and over time. The larger Ultra is the more natural fit if you value maximum screen area for drawing, notes, or working across apps. The Plus offers a smaller 12.6-inch panel for people who want a large-screen tablet but do not need the Ultra’s 14.6-inch size. Those are workload-based distinctions, not a claim that either model will outperform another: the cited launch details do not establish comparative performance.

Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2: media and shared viewing
Announced June 16, 2026, Lenovo’s Tab Plus Gen 2 emphasizes watching and listening rather than mimicking a laptop. It combines a 12.1-inch 2.5K LCD with Dolby Vision and HDR10, a nine-unit JBL speaker system with Dolby Atmos, and an integrated rotating kickstand that supports portrait and landscape positions. Lenovo lists Android 16, configurations ranging from 6 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage to 12 GB and 256 GB, and microSD expansion up to 2 TB. Its stated battery figure is up to 15 hours of YouTube streaming, a manufacturer claim rather than an independent test result. Lenovo says the model is eligible for two OS upgrades through Android 18 and four years of security patches through 2030.
Lenovo names the Tab Pen Plus, Wireless Keyboard, and 68W USB-C Wall Charger as compatible accessories, sold separately. Confirm that an accessory is the right version for this exact model before ordering.

Other Samsung tiers: smaller and more varied choices
Samsung’s first-quarter 2026 interim report lists the Galaxy Tab S11 and S11 Ultra with Android 16 and One UI 8.0, alongside the Tab S10 Lite and Tab A11/A11+ families. It records the Tab A11 at 8.7 inches and the Tab A11+ at 11 inches, with microSD expansion up to 2 TB for the listed models. These details show that Samsung’s range includes more than its newest premium S12 devices; they do not establish current prices or how long each model will receive software support. - Start with your main task. For drawing and handwritten notes, consider pen support and screen area. For frequent app switching, look for a capable model and check whether it receives the large-screen software features you want. For streaming or shared viewing, screen quality, speakers, and a stable stand may matter more than keyboard support. Basic browsing does not necessarily justify a premium productivity model.
- Choose a screen size you will actually carry. A larger display can make writing, drawing, and viewing more comfortable, but also makes the tablet less compact. Compare diagonal size and display type, resolution, and how you plan to hold or mount it. The 14.6-inch S12 Ultra, 12.6-inch S12+, and 12.1-inch Lenovo illustrate distinct sizes and product priorities rather than a simple ranking.
- Check pen and keyboard costs and fit. Find out whether the pen is included, whether the keyboard is optional, and whether the exact case or keyboard fits your model. A tablet can be useful without accessories, but adding them may change the total cost and portability.
- Match storage to your library and apps. Compare built-in storage first, then confirm whether the particular model supports microSD and the maximum capacity. Expansion is useful for media and files, but does not replace checking the tablet’s built-in capacity.
- Verify software support for the exact model and region. Do not infer a support duration from the Android version listed at launch. Lenovo states a specific upgrade and security-patch policy for Tab Plus Gen 2; Samsung’s cited report lists software versions for named models but is not a full support-duration policy.
- Check phone ecosystem and connectivity. Consider the phone you use, whether you need mobile data, and whether a cellular variant works with your local carrier. - Compare local availability and the complete price. Release dates, configurations, promotions, and prices vary by region and can change. Check the current local listing, included accessories, and any trial conditions rather than relying on an unverified price or launch offer.
Accessories can change the real cost and fit
A pen, keyboard, protective cover, or charger can make a tablet better suited to a particular task, but compatibility is model-specific. Lenovo names compatible accessories for Tab Plus Gen 2 in its launch announcement. Samsung’s US March 2026 price list includes keyboard covers, protective covers, and screen protectors for named tablet models; it is US-specific and says prices may change without notice. Check the model number and current local listing before buying an accessory. Samsung’s US accessory price list is not a global price guide.

Are Android tablets good for work now?
They can be, especially for focused work such as reading, annotation, handwritten notes, drawing, and tasks that fit comfortably on a tablet. Android 16 desktop windowing could improve the experience for people who need several apps visible at once, but Google’s announced later-2026 rollout means buyers should confirm availability on the device they plan to use. A tablet is not automatically a laptop replacement: keyboard availability, app behavior, workflow needs, and the model’s software support all matter.
For creative or productivity work, the S12 series’ included S Pen and large displays make it a relevant category to consider. For video and music, Lenovo’s kickstand and speaker system address a different set of priorities. The best choice follows the work you actually do, not the assumption that every tablet needs to serve as a laptop.
