An Android Service is a UI-free application component for work that should continue beyond an activity’s immediate interaction or for exposing an interface to another component. It does not automatically run on a worker thread, get a separate process, or keep running indefinitely. For most schedulable background work, Android recommends considering WorkManager; use a foreground service only when the work is noticeable to the user.
What is an Android service?
A service is one of Android’s application components. Unlike an activity, it has no user interface of its own. An app can use a service to carry out work independently of a particular screen or to provide a communication endpoint for other components.
The word “service” describes the component, not where its code runs. By default, a service runs on the main thread of its app in the hosting process. A long-running or blocking operation on that thread can make the app’s UI unresponsive. Move such work to an appropriate background execution mechanism or a worker thread; starting a service alone does not move the work off the main thread.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsServices also do not override Android’s background-execution limits. Their lifecycle and allowed execution depend on how they are started, the work they perform, the device’s Android version, and the app’s target SDK.

What is the difference between a started and bound service?
These are two ways a component interacts with a service. A service can be started, bound, or both. The choice affects who controls its lifetime and how clients communicate with it.
| Mode | How it begins | How it ends | Typical reason to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Started | A component requests that Android start it; the service receives onStartCommand(). |
The app should stop it when its work is complete, using stopSelf() or stopService(). |
Work whose lifetime is managed independently of the component that requested it. |
| Bound | A client calls bindService(); the service returns an IBinder from onBind(). |
A bound-only service generally ends when no clients remain bound. | A client needs to call methods on the service or exchange results through an interface. |
| Started and bound | The service is started and one or more clients bind to it. | Unbinding the clients does not stop the started service; the app must explicitly stop it. | The service must remain active independently while also serving connected clients. |
Managing started-service requests
A started service has a lifecycle independent of the component that initiated it. If it receives multiple start requests, account for each request before stopping it. Use the start-ID-aware stopping pattern, such as stopSelf(startId), so completion of an earlier request does not inadvertently stop work associated with a later one.

Managing bound clients
Binding gives a client an IBinder communication interface. The binder defines what the client can ask the service to do. A service bound only for clients typically remains available while at least one client is bound; once the last client unbinds, Android can destroy it. If it was also started, that rule does not end its started lifetime.
When should I use a foreground service or WorkManager?
Choose based on the work’s relationship to the user and whether it can be deferred, not simply on a desire to keep code running.

| Requirement | Direction | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Deferrable work that should run under conditions such as network availability | WorkManager or another background-task API suited to the task | Android recommends selecting a background-work API that matches the task and its constraints. |
| Ongoing work plainly noticeable to the user, such as active music playback or a user-visible fitness session | Foreground service, with an ongoing notification and the correct service type and permissions | Foreground services are intended for user-noticeable work. |
| A client needs to invoke service methods or exchange results through an interface | Bound service | Binding supplies an IBinder through which the client and service communicate. |
| Work should exist only while a client remains connected | Bound-only service | A bound-only service generally ends when no clients remain bound. |
Use a foreground service only for visible work
A foreground service is still a service, but it performs work that the user should be able to notice and displays an ongoing status notification. Android Developers says: “Only use a foreground service when your app needs to perform a task that is noticeable by the user, even when they’re not directly interacting with the app.” If the task is not important enough to justify that visible notice, choose another background-work option.
For apps targeting Android 14 (API 34) or later, foreground services must declare a type that matches their work and request the permission associated with that type. Android’s declaration guidance warns that a missing type can cause MissingForegroundServiceTypeException; omitting the appropriate specific permission can cause SecurityException. Check the current Android Developers guidance for the exact type and permission for your use case.

Use WorkManager for most schedulable background tasks
WorkManager is Android’s recommended starting point for most background tasks, particularly when work can be deferred and should respect constraints. For example, a task that should run only on an unmetered network can be expressed with a network constraint rather than treated as user-visible foreground work. Android’s services overview says developers should strongly consider WorkManager for most use cases.
IntentService is not a good choice for new apps: Android labels it unsuitable under background-execution limits and deprecated it starting with Android 11.

How should a bound service communicate with its clients?
Choose the communication mechanism based on whether client and service share a process, whether calls need to run concurrently, and how much implementation complexity and thread-safety work the app can support.
| Mechanism | Best fit described by Android | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Local Binder |
A client and service in the same app and process | The preferred simple approach for local communication. |
Messenger |
A simpler queued interprocess communication route | Requests are handled through a message queue rather than concurrent direct calls. |
| AIDL | Cases that need concurrent calls across a service interface | More implementation complexity and responsibility for thread safety. |
These options are not interchangeable labels for starting work. They define how clients communicate with a bound service. If the task is merely deferred background work, select a background-work API instead of adding a bound service without a client-interface need.
What Android version and target-SDK rules should I check?
Both the Android version on the device and the app’s target SDK matter. A rule may apply to apps running on a particular platform version, to apps targeting a particular API level, or to both. The Android Developers changes page, last updated October 1, 2026, describes the following requirements; verify the current platform guidance when implementing or updating a service.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

| Version | Requirement described in Android Developers guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Android 12 (API 31) | Apps targeting API 31 or later generally cannot start foreground services while in the background unless an exemption applies. | Whether the app is backgrounded and whether a documented exemption fits the situation. |
| Android 14 (API 34) | Apps targeting API 34 or later must declare foreground-service types and request the permission associated with the work type. | The manifest declarations and type-specific permission for each foreground-service use. |
| Android 15 (API 35) | Apps targeting API 35 or later face time limits for dataSync foreground services and the mediaProcessing type, plus restrictions on starting some foreground services from BOOT_COMPLETED. |
Whether the work uses either limited type or attempts to start a foreground service from that broadcast. |
| Android 16 (API 36) | Background jobs started from a foreground service must follow their respective runtime quotas. This includes jobs scheduled through JobScheduler and libraries such as WorkManager or DownloadManager. | Whether a job is started from a foreground service and how its runtime quota applies. |
For data transfer that responds to a user action, Android points to user-initiated data transfer jobs as exempt from ordinary job quotas. That is a specific option for the documented case, not a general exemption for all service-related work.
Practical pre-release checks
- Identify whether the work is deferrable, constrained by conditions, user-noticeable, or dependent on a client calling a service interface.
- Keep blocking or intensive operations off the app’s main thread.
- For started work, define how and when the app stops the service, including how multiple start requests are handled.
- For bound work, define the client interface and what should happen when clients disconnect.
- For foreground work, verify the ongoing notification, declared service type, and required permissions.
- Test the rules for the device’s Android version and the app’s target SDK rather than treating one API level as the only relevant condition.
Android’s official “Services overview,” “Bound services overview,” “Foreground services overview,” and “Changes to foreground services” documentation are the authoritative references for service behavior and version-specific requirements.
