Android privacy is best managed as an ongoing access review, not as one master switch. Check which apps have actually used sensitive permissions, give each app only the access its feature requires, prefer the shortest duration and lowest precision that still work, and revisit the choices after installing or abandoning apps. Android versions and manufacturer software use different labels and locations, so search Settings for the control named in each section if your menus do not match.
Audit access before changing it
Privacy Dashboard shows recent use
Open Settings and search for Privacy dashboard. The dashboard groups recent camera, microphone, location and other permission activity by app. Select a permission type or an app to see when access occurred, then open that app’s permission page if the activity is unexpected or no longer necessary. Google documents a history covering the previous 24 hours on Android 12 and the previous seven days on Android 13; do not assume the same window on every release. - Search Settings for Privacy dashboard.
- Choose a permission category, such as Location, Camera or Microphone.
- Review the listed apps and the times they accessed it.
- Tap an app to open its permission controls and change access if needed.
The dashboard is an audit and a shortcut to settings; it does not itself block an app. A legitimate background operation can appear in the list, while an old app that has not been used recently may still retain access until you remove it.

Search Settings for Permission manager or App permissions. Permission Manager groups apps by data type, including camera, microphone, contacts, location, photos and videos, nearby devices, notifications, phone and SMS. Use it when you want to inspect every app that can reach one category. Use an individual app’s App info or Permissions page when you already know which app needs review. Google describes both routes in its Android permission guide.

Depending on the permission and Android release, an app may offer Allow all the time, Allow only while using the app, Ask every time or Don’t allow. An option can be absent when the app or device does not support that access pattern. Android can also pause unused apps and remove their permissions automatically; leave that protection enabled when your phone offers it, particularly for apps installed once and forgotten.
Location: separate access, precision and device controls
Choose how long an app can receive location
In Permission Manager, open Location, select an app and review the choices your phone presents. Allow all the time permits background access; Allow only while using the app limits normal access to active use; Ask every time or Allow when sharing may be available for occasional requests; and Don’t allow blocks the app’s location permission. A navigation, safety or deliberate location-sharing feature may require background access, while a static reader or calculator normally has no credible location need. Denying access can disable maps, geotagging, nearby recommendations or other location-dependent functions.
Approximate and precise are different choices
On Android 12 and later, an app can receive approximate or precise location when both choices are available. Google describes approximate location as an area of about 3 square kilometers; precise location represents the device’s exact location. A weather app may work with an approximate area, whereas turn-by-turn navigation or a location-sharing feature may need precision. The app’s precise-location permission is separate from the phone’s overall Location Accuracy setting. Details are in Google’s guide to app location permissions.

Device Location Accuracy is not an app permission
Search Settings for Location Accuracy to control how the device estimates its position. When enabled, Android can combine GPS, Wi‑Fi, cellular networks and device sensors to improve the estimate. Changing this device-level setting does not automatically grant an app permission, and granting an app precise location does not by itself turn Location Accuracy on or off. Google explains the device setting at Manage your Android device’s location settings.
Turning off device location also does not remove every possible location signal. Google notes that local results and ads can still be based on your IP address. Treat the device switch, each app’s duration choice and the approximate/precise choice as three separate decisions.
Camera and microphone controls
Use the indicator to investigate access
On Android 12 and later, a green indicator appears in the upper-right corner when an app uses the camera or microphone. Google’s official wording is: “When apps use your camera or mic, a green indicator will show in the top right corner of your screen.” Tap the indicator to identify the app or service, then tap again to inspect its permission details. Per-app permissions versus a system-wide block
For a normal review, search Settings for Camera permissions or Microphone permissions, select an app and choose the available duration. A video-call app needs camera or microphone access only for the call feature; an app with no recording, calling, scanning or voice-input function has no obvious reason to retain it.

Turning either tile off blocks that sensor for all apps and services until you turn it back on. This is a useful temporary hard stop or a stronger device-wide restriction, but video calls, recording, voice typing, accessibility tools and other sensor-dependent features will fail while the tile is disabled. If a camera or microphone suddenly stops working, check these global tiles before troubleshooting the app.
Android ad privacy settings
Search Settings for Ad privacy. The menu can contain three independent controls. Their names and availability can change as Android features roll out and as apps adopt them.

These switches limit the specific Android mechanisms named above, not advertising as a whole. Google says you may continue to see ads related to removed topics or blocked apps, and personalization can also depend on advertising-ID settings and an app’s own policy. Read Google’s Android ad-privacy explanation before treating an opt-out as an ad blocker.
Other privacy controls you may see
Google’s Pixel overview lists additional controls that are separate from app permissions. Other manufacturers may omit them, rename them or place them elsewhere.
- Lock-screen notification visibility: controls whether notification content is readable before the phone is unlocked. Hiding sensitive content reduces shoulder-surfing risk but makes messages less convenient to preview.
- Clipboard access notices: alert you when an app reads copied text. The notice helps identify unexpected reads; it does not prevent a permitted read.
- Autofill: determines which service supplies saved passwords, addresses or payment details to apps and websites. A more restrictive service can reduce exposure but may require more manual entry.
- Activity controls: govern types of activity saved to your account. Disabling a category reduces that saved history while potentially limiting personalization or history-based features.
- Location History: manages a separate account history of places and trips; it is not the same switch as an app’s live location permission.
- Ads and usage diagnostics: provide additional choices about advertising-related data and diagnostic reporting. Turning diagnostics down can reduce shared usage data but may give the manufacturer less information for troubleshooting.

A practical starting configuration
The following is a conservative baseline, not a promise that every app will behave identically. Adjust it when a feature you intentionally use requires more access.

Fix common privacy-setting problems

| An app stopped working after a change | Return to its App permissions page and grant the narrowest option that supports the feature, such as while-in-use instead of all-the-time. Some apps require a permission before they will open a related screen. |
| Location is inaccurate or a map cannot navigate | Check the app’s precise-location toggle, its duration, the device’s Location Accuracy setting and whether the global Location switch is on. These are separate controls. |
| Camera or microphone access fails everywhere | Open Quick Settings and restore the Camera or Microphone tile. A system-wide tile overrides individual app grants while it is off. |

Why your phone may not match these labels
Google’s Pixel documentation describes one device family, while other Android manufacturers can move controls, use different wording or delay a feature. Android version also affects what appears: the documented dashboard history differs between Android 12 and Android 13, and sensor indicators and global camera/microphone switches are Android 12-era features. Confirm the version and model shown in About phone, then use Settings search rather than assuming a path from another phone. Permission choices also depend on the app declaring a capability and on regional or staged feature availability.
