If your Android phone is off, an on-screen control cannot be assumed to start it: those controls require Android to be running and the touchscreen to work. First check whether the phone is truly off, rule out charging and display problems, and identify the exact make and model before trying a restart combination or ordering a part.
First determine what “won’t turn on” means
A dark screen does not prove the power button has failed. The phone could have a drained battery, a charging problem, a frozen system, or a display fault. It also matters whether Android is already running: a touchscreen workaround may help keep a working phone usable, but it is not a dependable way to electrically start a fully powered-off handset.
Check whether the phone is on with a blank display
If possible, call the phone or use another way to check for sound or vibration. Google advises contacting an authorized repair center if the phone rings while its display stays blank; that points to a possible display problem rather than a phone that is off. Check closely for a faint image, too. Google’s Android troubleshooting guide covers blank-screen checks.

Rule out a drained battery or charging-path problem
Try a working outlet, a compatible charger, and a cable known to work. You can test the charger and cable with another device or try known-working alternatives. Look at the phone’s charging port for obvious lint or damage, but do not insert metal tools.

Charging indicators vary by model. Google says a red flashing battery light can mean there is not enough charge to turn on and recommends charging for at least 30 minutes before attempting a restart. Samsung says a completely drained Galaxy may show no charging indicator and advises charging it with a Samsung-certified charger and cable. A missing indicator by itself does not establish that the button is broken. Google’s guide and Samsung India’s Galaxy instructions describe these checks.
Consider whether the phone is frozen
If the phone appears to be on but is unresponsive, a force restart may help—but only if the buttons required by that phone’s procedure still work. Samsung India’s guidance, last updated July 22, 2026, says to hold the Power/Side and Volume Down buttons together for at least seven seconds, releasing when the Samsung logo appears and the device vibrates. This is a Samsung-specific instruction, not a universal Android shortcut.

Google’s general restart guidance says to hold the Power button for 5–7 seconds. That step cannot help if the physical button does not work. Check the instructions for the exact manufacturer and model before trying a button combination: layouts and procedures differ. Google’s guide and Samsung India’s instructions explain their respective procedures.
If Android is running, use an on-screen workaround
If the phone is unlocked, Android is still running, and the touchscreen responds, you may be able to use the Accessibility Menu for available screen-lock or power-menu actions. Search Settings for “Accessibility Menu,” or follow the setup instructions for your phone’s Android version and manufacturer skin. Google’s Accessibility Menu guide explains how to enable and use it.

This is only a stopgap. The menu does not repair the switch and should not be relied on to start a phone after it has shut down. If Android is not running or the touchscreen does not work, this route is unavailable.
Check whether the power-key behavior changed
A long press that behaves differently is not necessarily a failed switch. HMD’s Australia support page gives one version-dependent example: on the described phones, a long press opens the power menu in Android 11, while Android 12 defaults to launching Assistant; Power plus Volume Up opens the power menu in that configuration. Do not assume that combination applies to other phones. HMD’s explanation is specific to its documented configuration.

Choose between a model-specific DIY repair and service
A power-button repair is not one standard Android procedure. The failed component might be a button, a flex cable, or part of a combined assembly; the needed part and disassembly steps depend on the handset. Identify the exact maker and model—and Android version, if available—before looking for instructions or parts. Do not order a generic “Android power button” replacement.

When DIY may make sense
Consider DIY only when you know the exact handset model, have a trustworthy matching repair guide, can identify the required part and tools, and feel comfortable following the procedure. The model-specific examples show why a generic kit or guide is not enough: iFixit’s ZTE ZMax Pro power-button guide lists a plastic opening tool, tweezers, and a Phillips #00 screwdriver; its Samsung Galaxy Nexus guide specifies a replacement power flex cable, a small Phillips screwdriver, a plastic opening tool, and tweezers. These are examples for those models, not universal instructions or a recommendation to repair them.

Only after finding a guide for your exact model should you consider a smartphone repair tool kit. Precision drivers and opening tools must match the job; neither a kit nor a replacement part should be chosen from the Android label alone.
When to use a repair provider
Seek professional diagnosis if the phone has physical or liquid damage, you suspect a deeper hardware fault, you cannot find a safe matching guide, or you are uncomfortable opening it. Start with the handset maker or an authorized service provider where available. Motorola India classifies nonworking buttons as a hardware issue and says options and cost depend on warranty, device condition, and the repair center’s assessment; that guidance is regional, not a worldwide price or coverage rule. If the phone is usable, back up important data before service and check the provider’s current instructions for preparing the device. Policies and procedures can change, so confirm details for your country and exact model.

- Phone maker and exact model, including model variant where available.
- Android version, if you can access it.
- Whether the phone is currently on, whether the screen shows anything, and whether it responds to calls, sound, or vibration.
- What happens when you connect a known-working compatible charger and cable.
- Any physical or liquid damage, and whether the touchscreen works.
These details help distinguish a failed button from a charging, display, or software issue and are essential for finding instructions and parts that actually fit.
