When an Android phone will not scan a QR code, the problem is usually simple: the camera is in the wrong mode, the code is difficult to see, or the phone does not support built-in QR scanning. Work through these fixes in order. Most take less than a minute.

1. Use the correct camera mode

Start with the regular camera app rather than a specialized mode.

  1. Open Camera.
  2. Select Photo mode.
  3. Point the phone at the complete QR code.
  4. When a banner, link, or notification appears, tap it.

On phones using Camera from Google, you can also tap QR if that option is displayed. QR scanning is not available in Portrait or Video modes in Camera from Google. QR scanning through the camera is also available only on selected devices.

On a Samsung Galaxy, open Camera, select PHOTO, and hold the code inside the viewfinder.

2. Turn on QR scanning in the camera settings

Some Samsung phones have a separate switch that controls whether the Camera app looks for QR codes.

  1. Open Camera.
  2. Tap the Settings gear.
  3. Turn on Scan QR codes.
  4. Return to PHOTO mode and try again.

The exact menu can vary by Galaxy model and software version. If the option is missing, use Samsung’s separate scanner from Quick Settings:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers.
  2. Tap Scan QR code.
  3. Point the scanner at the code.

If you do not see Scan QR code, swipe across the Quick Settings pages or tap the pencil/edit button to check whether the tile is available. Samsung’s scanner may also let you turn on the flashlight or choose a QR image from Gallery.

3. Make the screen showing the QR code brighter

A code displayed on a dim monitor, laptop, or another phone may not have enough contrast for the camera to recognize it. Increase the brightness of the screen showing the code, not just the brightness of the Android phone doing the scanning.

  • On the display showing the code, set brightness high or close to maximum.
  • Remove dark-mode overlays, dimming filters, or blue-light overlays temporarily.
  • Keep reflections and glare away from the screen.

If the QR code is printed, use a brighter room or switch on a light. Avoid placing the code directly under a harsh reflection.

4. Clean the camera lens

A fingerprint or smear over the camera lens can make the QR pattern too blurry to read, especially when the phone is trying to focus at close range.

  1. Remove the phone case if its camera opening partly covers the lens.
  2. Wipe the lens with a lens cloth or soft, clean cloth.
  3. Try scanning again without touching the camera glass.

Do not use abrasive paper or spray cleaner directly on the phone. If ordinary cleaning does not help, open the camera and check whether normal objects also look consistently blurry. A focus or camera hardware problem may be involved.

5. Hold the phone upright and keep the whole code visible

Keep the phone level and hold it directly in front of the QR code. Do not rotate the phone sharply or angle it so that one side of the code appears much smaller than the other.

Make sure all four corners of the QR code are inside the viewfinder. The three large square markers at the corners need to be visible. If part of a marker is cut off, move the phone back or adjust the code until the entire pattern is on screen.

Also avoid covering the camera lens with a finger. If the code is on a glossy surface, tilt the printed page or phone displaying it slightly to remove glare while keeping the code relatively level.

6. Change the scanning distance

Being too close is one of the most common reasons a camera cannot read a QR code. Being too far away can cause the pattern to become too small. Try both directions:

  1. Start close enough for the code to fill much of the viewfinder.
  2. Slowly move the phone backward while keeping the entire code visible.
  3. If that fails, start about one foot away.
  4. Move slowly closer until the code comes into focus.

Do not pinch-zoom immediately. Digital zoom can make the square modules harder to distinguish. Change the physical distance first, pause briefly for autofocus, and then try the link or banner that appears.

7. Scan a saved screenshot or image with Google Lens

You do not need a second device when the QR code is displayed on the same Android phone. Save a screenshot of the code, then use Lens through Chrome.

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Open a new tab.
  3. Tap the Google Lens icon in the search bar.
  4. Tap Search with your camera.
  5. Select the QR-code screenshot or image from the thumbnails.
  6. Tap the link or result that Lens identifies.

For a QR code shown directly on a webpage, touch and hold the image and select Search image with Google Lens. On a Galaxy phone, you can also save a QR code received in an email, text message, or another app to Gallery, then select it through an available scanner.

This method is useful when the camera cannot focus on a screen, when the QR code is inside an app, or when you need to scan a code from a screenshot.

8. Check Android compatibility and use another scanner

Built-in camera QR scanning requires Android 9 or later, according to Google. Older phones that cannot run Android 9 or newer may need a QR-scanning app. Camera from Google also states that its QR feature is available only on selected devices, so the Android version alone does not guarantee that the camera will show a scan result.

Check your version from:

Settings → About phone → Android version

The label may be under Software information on some manufacturers. If an update is available, check:

Settings → System → Software update

Samsung devices commonly use:

Settings → Software update → Download and install

If the phone is too old for built-in scanning, use a reputable QR app from Google Play and review its permissions before installing it. Avoid random scanner apps that request access unrelated to scanning, such as contacts, SMS, or accessibility controls.

Pixel-specific camera setting

On Pixel phones, Google documents a camera setting for scan suggestions:

Camera → Settings → More settings → Camera scan suggestions

Turn this on, return to the camera, and try the QR code again. Google Lens is another supported scanning method on Pixel phones.

When the QR code scans but nothing opens

A camera recognizing the pattern and successfully opening its destination are separate steps. If a banner or link appears, tap it rather than waiting for the page to launch automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the link still fails:

  • Check that Wi-Fi or mobile data is working.
  • Try opening the result in Chrome.
  • Confirm that the QR code has not expired, particularly for tickets, login codes, and payment requests.
  • Check the displayed address before entering passwords or payment details.

A QR code can be readable but point to a deleted page, an unavailable app, or a service that requires an account.

Quick troubleshooting checklist

Problem What to try
No banner appears Use Photo mode, enable QR scanning, clean the lens, and adjust distance.
Code is on the same phone Take a screenshot and select it through Chrome’s Google Lens flow.
Code is on a monitor Increase the monitor brightness and remove glare.
Camera stays blurry Clean the lens, remove the case, and move farther away.
Old Android phone Check the Android version and use a reputable scanner app if necessary.
Link appears but fails Tap the link, check the internet connection, and consider that the destination may have expired.

FAQ

Why is my Android camera not detecting a QR code?

The camera may be in Portrait or Video mode, QR scanning may be disabled, the lens may be dirty, or the code may be too close, too far away, dim, tilted, or partly outside the viewfinder.

Do all Android phones scan QR codes automatically?

No. Google states that built-in camera scanning requires Android 9 or later, and Camera from Google supports QR scanning only on selected devices.

Do I need to install Google Lens to scan a QR code?

Not always. Many Android phones can scan from the built-in Camera app. Samsung Galaxy phones may also have a Scan QR code Quick Settings tile. Lens is especially useful for screenshots and images already stored on the phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I scan a QR code from a screenshot on the same phone?

Yes. In Chrome, open a new tab, tap the Google Lens icon, choose Search with your camera, select the screenshot, and tap the resulting link.

Why does the QR code scan but the website does not open?

Recognition and opening the destination are separate steps. Tap the banner or link, check your connection, and consider whether the QR code points to an expired page, unavailable app, or service requiring an account.

The Bottom Line

Start with the basics: use Photo mode, enable QR scanning if your phone provides that setting, clean the lens, brighten the displayed code, and adjust the distance until the full pattern is sharp. If the code is already on your phone, use Chrome’s Google Lens image picker instead. Finally, check that the phone runs Android 9 or later and remember that a readable QR code can still lead to an expired or unavailable destination.
