You can use an old Android phone to extend Wi-Fi only if that phone supports sharing an existing Wi-Fi connection through tethering. Google says some phones can do this, but an ordinary mobile hotspot may share cellular data instead. Check the phone’s hotspot settings before relying on it.

Check whether your phone can share Wi-Fi

  1. Connect the old phone to the Wi-Fi network you want to extend.

  2. Open Settings and look for Hotspot, Tethering, or a similarly named connection-sharing section. The exact menu names depend on the Android version and phone manufacturer.

  3. With the phone connected to Wi-Fi, open its hotspot settings and look for an option to share Wi-Fi or an equivalent setting. Google notes that only some phones support sharing a Wi-Fi connection by tethering; its instructions do not specify a universal toggle or menu path. See Google’s Android hotspot and tethering guide.

If there is no Wi-Fi-sharing option, the phone may still offer a hotspot that uses mobile data. That is not the same as repeating the Wi-Fi network, and it may use your cellular allowance.

Set up the hotspot and test it

If the phone offers Wi-Fi sharing, enable it and use the phone’s settings to set the hotspot name and password. Connect a nearby device to that hotspot, then check that the device can reach the internet. This is a practical check; Google’s general instructions do not guarantee that the feature will work on every handset or describe performance for a particular model.

Google’s guide says a Wi-Fi hotspot can share the phone’s mobile data with up to 10 other devices. That limit is for mobile-data hotspot sharing; it does not establish how many devices a phone can support while sharing an existing Wi-Fi connection.

Know the limits before using it regularly

  • Phone support varies. The general Android hotspot instructions are not proof that every Android phone can relay Wi-Fi. If you cannot find a Wi-Fi-sharing setting, consult your phone manufacturer’s support information.

  • Range and performance are not assured. Google’s guidance does not identify which older models can share Wi-Fi or establish the range, speed, reliability, or simultaneous-client performance of that setup. Test it where you plan to use it rather than assuming it will cover a particular room.

  • Battery use matters. Google recommends plugging the phone in while tethering, turning tethering off when you finish, and enabling automatic hotspot shutoff if the phone offers it. For longer sessions, check that a charger is compatible with the phone.

Other ways to share a phone connection

Android also documents Bluetooth and USB tethering. These share a phone connection through a different link and do not, by themselves, make the phone a Wi-Fi extender. Choose a method that both the phone and the client device support. Google notes that Android USB tethering does not work with Mac computers.

Google’s automatic internet-sharing feature for personal Android devices is separate from using an old phone as a home Wi-Fi repeater. It requires both devices to use the same Google Account and have cross-device services enabled; availability and behavior vary by Android version and manufacturer. Details are in Google’s guide to connecting personal devices automatically.
