You can use an Android phone as a portable computer by connecting a supported phone to an external display and using its desktop-style interface. The two documented native options are Android connected-display desktop windowing on supported Pixel and Samsung phones, and Samsung DeX on supported Galaxy models. A portable monitor or compact keyboard-and-mouse kit can make either option easier to carry, but accessories cannot add desktop support to an incompatible phone.
First, check whether your phone supports a desktop session
Android desktop features are not universal. Google’s Android Developers Blog describes a desktop session starting on the connected display when a supported Android phone or foldable is connected. Samsung Developer describes DeX as a way to bring a PC-like experience to a larger screen using phone apps. These are distinct options, and eligibility depends on the exact phone and its software support.
Before buying accessories, check the phone maker’s documentation for external-display video output and the desktop feature you intend to use. A USB-C port alone does not establish that a phone can send video. The same applies to cables, adapters, and hubs: their plugs must fit, but they also need to carry video in the configuration you plan to use.

Option 1: Use Android connected-display desktop windowing
On supported Pixel and Samsung phones, connecting an external display can start an Android desktop session on that display. This is the Google-documented route to investigate if you want an Android desktop experience without using DeX. Check current support for your particular phone rather than assuming that every Pixel or Samsung model qualifies.

Once connected, a keyboard and mouse can make text entry and pointer-based tasks more convenient. The behavior of individual apps and their desktop support can vary, so confirm that the apps you rely on work the way you need on an external display.
Option 2: Use Samsung DeX
DeX is Samsung’s desktop-like option for supported Galaxy phones. Samsung Developer describes it as bringing a PC-like experience to a larger screen with apps used on the phone. Samsung’s DeX guidance also covers mouse and keyboard interaction. Consult Samsung’s documentation for your model to check eligibility and its supported display connections.

DeX keeps you in an Android app environment. It does not guarantee that software made for a desktop operating system will run on the phone; check the Android versions of the programs you need before relying on this setup.

A portable monitor can turn either supported desktop experience into a workstation you can carry. The monitor itself does not provide Android desktop support: it is simply the external display for a phone that already supports the required feature.

- Verify that the phone can output video and that the monitor accepts a compatible video input.
- Choose a cable, adapter, or hub that carries video—not merely one with a USB-C connector.
- If using a hub, check that it supports video and offers the power pass-through you need.
- Check how the monitor is powered and what size and weight fit your travel setup.
Power arrangements vary by phone, monitor, and connection. Keep the phone charged, and check the manufacturers’ specifications for your intended combination; the cited guidance does not establish one universal power setup or battery-life expectation.
Option 4: Keep the keyboard and mouse compact
A compact Bluetooth keyboard and mouse can make writing, browsing, and pointer-driven tasks more comfortable while keeping the kit portable. You can add them to a supported external-display session, or use supported input controls where applicable. Pairing peripherals does not turn an unsupported phone into a desktop device; the phone must still support the display experience.

Before choosing Bluetooth or USB peripherals, check how they connect to the phone or hub and whether the full setup leaves the ports and power connections you need. App behavior remains dependent on the app and desktop experience, not just the keyboard and mouse.
Set up a wired workstation
- Confirm phone support. Read the manufacturer’s documentation for external video output and the desktop feature—Android connected-display desktop windowing or DeX—you plan to use.
- Match the display connection. Check the monitor’s video inputs and choose a compatible video-capable cable, adapter, or hub. Do not infer video output from a USB-C port or connector alone.
- Plan power. Check the phone, monitor, and hub documentation for their power requirements and pass-through behavior. Connect power as the manufacturers specify.
- Connect the display and start the session. Follow the phone and display instructions. On a supported setup, the phone’s desktop experience should appear on the external display.
- Add input devices if useful. Connect a compatible keyboard and mouse, then check that the apps you need are usable in the session.
Will it replace your laptop?
It can cover tasks such as writing, browsing, and messaging if your phone supports the desktop experience and the apps you need behave well on the larger display. It is not a promise of full desktop-operating-system compatibility: the setup remains an Android app environment, and desktop support and app behavior vary. If a particular desktop-only program or workflow is essential, verify that it has a suitable Android version before depending on the phone as your only computer.

Google’s Android Developers Blog documents connected-display desktop sessions for supported Android phones, while Samsung Developer documents DeX for supported Galaxy devices. Neither establishes that all Android phones support a desktop session, nor does the guidance provide a complete model-by-model compatibility matrix or accessory compatibility list. Use the exact phone, software, monitor, and connection documentation to settle those details.
