Good internet does not guarantee that an Android app can send notifications: background activity may be restricted, notifications may be disabled or silent, or a Mode may be filtering alerts. On Pixel phones, Adaptive Battery is one possible cause—Google says it may delay notifications—but that does not establish it as the usual cause across Android devices. Check the affected app and the conditions under which alerts disappear before changing battery settings.
First identify what “not showing” means
The symptom helps narrow down the cause. Do notifications never arrive, appear only after you open the app, show up silently in the notification shade, or arrive but stay off the lock screen? These are different problems: silent notifications can still appear when you swipe down, while lock-screen settings can hide notifications that were delivered.
If your phone has notification history enabled, review it for recently dismissed or snoozed alerts. The history can help distinguish a notification that arrived but was dismissed from one that did not appear. Availability and menu labels vary by device.

On phones whose menus match Google’s instructions, go to Settings > Notifications > App notifications, select the affected app, and check that notifications and the relevant categories are enabled. You can also touch and hold a notification in the shade to open that notification’s settings. Some apps have additional notification controls inside the app.

Check whether the category is set to alert or remain silent. An alerting notification can make a sound or vibrate; a silent one may appear in the shade without those interruptions. Google’s Android notification guide covers app notifications, categories, notification history, and device variation.
Could Adaptive Battery be delaying notifications?
It could, particularly on a Pixel phone. Google says Adaptive Battery learns how you use the phone and may reduce performance and delay notifications. This is a documented possibility, not evidence that Adaptive Battery is the probable cause on every Android phone.

For Pixel instructions covered by Google’s Android 14-and-later guidance, check the affected app at Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > App battery usage > Allow background usage. The usual per-app setting is Optimized. If a particular app has a demonstrated notification problem, turning off optimization for that app is a targeted test: it allows the app to run more while unused, but can use more battery. Adaptive Battery can remain on. See Google’s Pixel guidance on Adaptive Battery and battery optimization. Labels and availability may differ on other Android devices.

Battery Saver is distinct from Adaptive Battery. Google says it limits or turns off background activity, and that apps, features, or network connections may experience delays while it is enabled. If Battery Saver is on or scheduled, temporarily turn it off and observe whether the affected app’s notifications return. Google’s Android battery guidance explains Battery Saver behavior.

See whether Android has paused the app as unused
Android can restrict an app that has not been used for a long time. Depending on the device, this can include revoking permissions, stopping background activity, and preventing notifications. Find the affected app in the system’s Unused apps view and check whether Pause app activity if unused is enabled. Turn that option off for an app that needs to send ongoing notifications. Google describes this behavior in its guide to managing unused apps.
Check Do Not Disturb, Modes, and lock-screen display
Do Not Disturb and other Modes can filter which apps are allowed to notify you. Turn Do Not Disturb off temporarily, then inspect any scheduled Modes, such as Bedtime or Driving, that might be active at the times alerts go missing. A schedule can explain why the problem happens only at certain hours. Google’s guide to Modes and Do Not Disturb explains their filters and schedules.

If the alert appears in notification history or the shade but not on the lock screen, check the phone’s lock-screen notification display settings. That symptom points to display behavior rather than necessarily indicating that the app failed to deliver a notification.
Use the timing and scope to choose what to test

Change one relevant setting at a time and retest. That makes it easier to identify the cause without disabling several battery or notification protections at once.

If notifications still do not arrive
- Restart the phone and test the affected app again.
- Install available Android system and app updates.
- Check the phone manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact model and Android version if the menu paths or labels differ.
Google’s general battery guidance recommends restarting and checking for Android and app updates when problems persist. A factory reset is not an early troubleshooting step: it removes device data, so consider it only after simpler checks and after backing up what you need.
Google’s help pages document the Pixel-specific battery behavior and general Android notification checks, but they do not establish how often Adaptive Battery causes missing notifications or that every manufacturer implements these settings identically.
