If Android notifications show up only after you open an app, or arrive in a burst, check the affected app’s battery and background-data access, its notification settings, and any active interruption-reduction mode. These settings can limit background activity or hide alerts; they are not the only possible causes, and the right menu labels vary by phone and Android version.
1. Check whether battery settings restrict the app
Start with the app whose notifications are late. Battery Saver limits or turns off background activity, and Google says some apps, network connections, and features may experience delays while it is on. See whether the problem happens when Battery Saver is active or follows a battery-saving schedule. Google’s Android battery guidance explains its effects.
On Pixel phones, Adaptive Battery may reduce performance and delay notifications. Google’s documented path to review an individual app is Settings → Apps → See all apps → [app] → App battery usage → Allow background usage. Available choices and labels can differ on other devices.

Allowing an app more background use may help it work while you are not using it, but it can consume more battery. Consider changing only the affected app’s setting if timely alerts matter enough to justify that trade-off; do not disable battery optimization globally as a first step. 2. Check background data and Data Saver
Background data lets apps update or provide notifications when they are not open. If Data Saver is on, it may restrict background data access. Check the affected app’s data settings and, if available, allow its background data or mark it as unrestricted while Data Saver is enabled.
Exact controls depend on Android version, phone maker, and app. Google’s background data and Data Saver instructions include version-specific guidance and discuss Google Play Store behavior; they should not be treated as the identical path for every app on every Android phone.

3. Make sure the alert is enabled and not silent
Open the affected app’s notification settings and confirm notifications are allowed. If the app has notification categories or channels, check the category for the alert you expect: it may be set to Silent rather than alerting. On Pixel, alerting notifications can make a sound or vibrate, while silent notifications appear in the notification shade without sound or vibration. A silent alert can feel late if you do not notice it when it arrives. Google’s Pixel notification guidance also recommends checking battery-saving and interruption-reduction settings when alerts are missing or delayed.

Do Not Disturb and modes such as Bedtime or Driving can filter or silence alerts based on apps, people, interruption types, or a schedule. Review whether a mode is active now, whether it turns on automatically, and whether its notification filters exclude the affected app. A notification that is silenced or hidden during a mode may seem to arrive late when the mode ends.

Settings and instructions vary by Android release; Google notes that some of its mode guidance applies only to Android 14 and later. See Google’s guide to Do Not Disturb, modes, and schedules. If the menu names on your phone differ, search Settings for “Do Not Disturb,” “Modes,” or “notifications,” or consult your phone maker’s help.
5. Use notification history to see what happened
If your phone offers Notification history and it is enabled, check it for recent alerts, including dismissed or snoozed notifications. History can help distinguish an alert you missed from one that did not appear in the usual way, but it cannot establish why delivery was delayed. Not all Android devices have the feature, and the path varies. Google describes the availability caveat in its notification history help.

Change one setting at a time
After checking the settings above, adjust one relevant setting and observe whether that app’s alerts behave differently before changing another. This makes it easier to identify which change matters and to reverse changes that do not help. The official guidance cited here explains settings that can affect background activity, data access, or alert visibility; it does not diagnose a particular app, phone, or specific delayed notification.
