Android notification controls are spread across several layers. Use Settings > Notifications > Notification history to inspect supported-device history, Settings > Notifications > App notifications to control an app, conversation settings to manage bubbles, and Notifications on lock screen to decide whether message text is visible. Exact labels and available features vary by Android version, manufacturer interface and work-profile policy.
The practical distinction is scope: a global setting affects the phone, an app setting affects every notification from one app, a category setting affects one type of alert, and a conversation setting affects one chat. Interruption controls (alerting, silent and Do Not Disturb) are separate from whether a notification is allowed to exist.
See notifications you dismissed
On a device that supports the feature, open Settings > Notifications > Notification history. Google says this page can show snoozed notifications, recently dismissed notifications and the day’s notification history. You can tap an item in Last 24 hours, or touch and hold an item under Recently dismissed to manage it.

Notification history is optional and device-dependent. Google’s Android Help warns: “Some devices may not have notification history and the settings can vary slightly among devices.” A Samsung, OnePlus, Motorola or other manufacturer interface may place the page elsewhere or use different wording. If you cannot find the menu, search Settings for notification history and check your phone’s Android version.

What history can and cannot do
- It can provide a record of supported notifications from the available history window, including items you dismissed or snoozed.
- It can let you open or manage a listed notification, depending on the app and device.
- It does not guarantee recovery of a notification from before history was available or enabled on that phone.
- It is not a universal archive: an unsupported Android build may have no history page at all.
Stop or adjust an app’s notifications
For phone-wide app controls, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, select the app and switch its notifications on or off. This is the broadest app-level control: turning the switch off prevents that app’s notification channels from notifying you.
You can also change controls from a notification that is currently visible. Touch and hold the notification, tap Settings, and adjust the controls shown for that app. This shortcut is useful when you know which alert is bothersome but do not know the app’s Settings path.
Categories provide finer control
Many apps expose notification categories (also called channels). When categories are available, configure them separately rather than disabling the entire app. For example, you might keep a security alert category enabled while silencing a marketing category. Android does not require every app to expose categories, so the list and names differ by app.

Choosing Silent is therefore different from turning the app or category off. The notification remains available for later review, but it does not announce itself with sound or vibration.
Control notification bubbles
Bubbles are a conversation-level presentation option. They do not replace the underlying notification permission: a conversation must still be allowed to notify before a bubble can appear.
Make a conversation bubble
- When the conversation’s notification appears, touch and hold it.
- Choose Bubble conversation.
- Use the floating bubble to open that conversation without first opening the full notification shade.
Stop one conversation from bubbling
- Open the bubble.
- Tap Manage.
- Choose Don’t bubble conversation.
Android also provides an app-level choice for conversations: all conversations from that app can bubble, only selected conversations can bubble, or no conversations can bubble. The exact control is exposed through the app’s notification and conversation settings and may be labeled differently by the phone maker.
A dismissed bubble can return when a new message arrives. Dismissing the floating icon is not the same as choosing Don’t bubble conversation or blocking the conversation’s notifications.

Hide message previews on the lock screen
Lock-screen privacy has two separate decisions: whether an alert is shown at all, and whether its sensitive text is revealed. In Settings, look for Notifications on lock screen; wording varies by device. Pixel documentation also exposes a Show sensitive content switch.
Choose one of three privacy levels

These choices are independent of app permission and alert style. An app can be permitted and alerting while its lock-screen text is hidden. Conversely, hiding lock-screen details does not stop sound, vibration or a notification in the unlocked shade.
Work-profile lock-screen behavior
Android Enterprise work profiles add policy-controlled privacy. Depending on Android version and administrator settings, a work notification can show that a work alert exists while hiding its sensitive details. Some deployments let the administrator or user show all work content, hide sensitive content, or show no work notifications on the lock screen. If a setting is unavailable or locked, the organization’s policy is controlling it rather than a personal notification preference.

- Open the dashboard and select a permission, such as location, microphone or camera.
- Review which apps used that permission and when.
- Tap an app to change its access.
The activity window depends on Android version: Google documents the last 24 hours on Android 12 and the last 7 days on Android 13. A phone may use different labels or omit the dashboard if the manufacturer’s build does not provide it. This dashboard audits permission use; it is not a replacement for notification history and does not list every notification an app sent.
Silence interruptions with Do Not Disturb and Modes
For temporary or scheduled quiet periods, open Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb, or open Do Not Disturb from Quick Settings. Configure which people, apps or other notification types can interrupt you, and set a schedule when appropriate.
Available modes
- Do Not Disturb: applies an interruption filter immediately or on a schedule.
- Bedtime: can apply a recurring sleep schedule and its associated filters.
- Driving: can apply driving-related interruption rules.
- Custom modes: let you define a name, schedule and notification filters for a particular situation.
Some Mode steps work only on Android 14 and newer. Earlier versions may expose Do Not Disturb without the newer Modes workflow, and a manufacturer may rename or reorganize the controls. A mode-filtered notification is not necessarily blocked permanently: it can remain in the shade or become available after the mode ends, according to the phone’s filter behavior.

Troubleshoot common notification problems
“I dismissed a notification and cannot find it.”
- Open Settings and search for Notification history.
- If the page exists, review Last 24 hours and Recently dismissed.
- If no page exists, your Android build may not support history; check the manufacturer’s documentation rather than assuming the notification was saved elsewhere.
History cannot be used to promise recovery of alerts from before the feature was available or enabled.
“One app is too noisy, but I still need some alerts.”
Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, select the app and inspect its categories. Keep necessary categories enabled and set unwanted ones to silent or off. If categories are not offered, the app may provide only an all-notifications switch.
“A chat keeps appearing as a bubble.”
Open the bubble, tap Manage, and choose Don’t bubble conversation. If new messages recreate the bubble, also review the app’s conversation-bubble choice and select only the conversations you want, or disable bubbles for that app.
“Message text is visible while the phone is locked.”
Open the lock-screen notification settings and select Hide sensitive content, or choose Show no notifications for maximum lock-screen privacy. On Pixel devices, check the Show sensitive content switch. A work profile may have a separate administrator-enforced policy.
“Do Not Disturb did not silence everything.”
Open Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb and review its people, app and notification filters. Check whether you are using a scheduled Bedtime, Driving or custom mode instead of the filter you intended. Menu behavior and newer Mode steps differ by Android version, with some features limited to Android 14 and up.
Why two Android phones show different menus
Android notification management is not one identical interface. Feature availability depends on the Android release, the manufacturer’s software skin, the app’s own notification categories, and—on managed devices—the work-profile administrator. Google explicitly documents that notification-history settings can vary slightly and that some devices do not have the feature.
When a path in this guide does not match your screen, use the Settings search field for the distinctive term—notification history, App notifications, Notifications on lock screen, Privacy dashboard or Do Not Disturb. Then confirm the scope before changing anything: phone-wide, app-wide, category, conversation or work profile. That approach preserves the alerts you still need while reducing unwanted interruptions and exposed lock-screen content.
