Neither setting is proven to be universally better for sleep. Android Night Light warms the display by reducing short-wavelength (blue) color, which can make a bright phone more comfortable in a dim room. Grayscale removes color altogether and may make colorful feeds less tempting to browse. Choose Night Light when visual comfort is the problem; try scheduled grayscale when endless scrolling is the problem. A lower brightness level, a fixed bedtime boundary, and putting the phone away usually matter more than either filter alone.
What Night Light and grayscale actually change
Night Light warms the display
Night Light shifts the screen toward red or amber tones. Google describes the feature as a way “to make it easier to use your phone in dim light” by reducing the screen’s blue color. It changes the color balance, not the content or the phone’s brightness by itself. White backgrounds can look warmer, and photographs or videos retain their colors, although those colors appear less cool.
The practical goal is comfort during low-light use. A warmer screen can feel less glaring than a cool white display, particularly when the room is dark. You still need to set brightness separately; Night Light is not a substitute for dimming the display.
Grayscale removes color
Grayscale converts the interface to black and white. Red notification badges, colorful thumbnails, game graphics and bright social-media imagery lose their color cues. Text and layout remain available, so the phone still works, but the visual reward of opening a colorful app may be reduced.

Google positions grayscale in Bedtime mode as a wind-down aid. That wording describes an intended behavioral function, not proof that the setting treats insomnia or improves sleep for every user.
Dark theme is different
Dark theme changes light backgrounds to darker ones while preserving color. It is separate from both Night Light and grayscale. A phone can use dark theme with Night Light, grayscale, both, or neither, depending on the device and Android version.
Which setting fits your reason for using the phone at night?
| What you want to change | Setting to try first | What it can realistically do | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| A cool, bright-looking screen feels uncomfortable in a dim room | Night Light | Warms the color balance; you can schedule it and lower brightness | It does not prove that sleep will improve or that blue light is the sole cause of a sleep problem |
| Colorful feeds, videos or games keep you browsing | Grayscale | Removes visual color cues and may make apps less engaging | It does not reliably reduce screen time for everyone |
| You want a routine that signals bedtime | Bedtime mode, with or without grayscale | Runs selected wind-down options on a schedule | It cannot enforce a phone-free bedtime unless you create a boundary yourself |
| You want evidence that one option is superior | Neither has a direct advantage established | You can run a personal, time-limited experiment | No available trial directly compares Android Night Light with Android grayscale |
What studies say about sleep and blue-light filtering
The evidence is mixed
A 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis of interventions that reduced short-wavelength light at night found mixed results across studies. In one pooled self-reported analysis, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index result favored the intervention (Hedges’ g = −1.25, 95% confidence interval −2.39 to −0.11; k = 3). A separate pooled analysis of total sleep time also favored the intervention (Hedges’ g = 0.51, 95% confidence interval 0.18 to 0.84; k = 3). These calculations combine only three studies for each outcome and do not isolate Android Night Light, so they cannot show that Night Light causes the difference.
A small controlled smartphone study found no significant hormone change
A randomized, double-blind, crossover study published in 2017 involved 22 healthy adults who used conventional and blue-light-suppressed smartphones during evening sessions. The investigators reported differences in sleepiness and commission errors under the two display conditions. However, measured serum melatonin and cortisol changes were not statistically significant. The sample was small and the protocol was specific; it does not establish a universal effect across phones, brightness levels or users.
What this means for Night Light
Night Light is reasonable to try for comfort, especially if a cool display feels harsh. The available studies do not justify promising a particular improvement in sleep duration, sleep quality or hormone levels. Do not treat the setting as a therapy for a sleep disorder.
What the grayscale evidence says
A 2024 paper examined a one-week grayscale intervention among Android users. Participants had lower screen time during the grayscale period, but they did not report improved sleep quality. The authors also noted that evidence about grayscale and sleep has been limited.
That result supports a narrower claim: grayscale may work as a behavioral cue that makes a phone less visually rewarding. It does not show that grayscale itself improves sleep, and it does not mean every person will use a phone less after enabling it. If you continue opening the same apps in black and white, the filter has not solved the underlying habit.

How to turn on Night Light on a Pixel
Google Pixel Help documents the following path. Labels can differ on phones from other manufacturers or on older Android releases.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & touch.
- Select Night Light.
- Turn it on, then adjust the intensity to a comfortable level.
- Under the scheduling option, choose a custom time or Sunset to sunrise when that option is offered.
On Pixel, Night Light is also available from Quick Settings. If you cannot find it, open Quick Settings and use the edit control to add the tile, or search Settings for “Night Light.” The exact tile and menu wording may vary.
How to turn on grayscale at bedtime on a Pixel
Google places grayscale inside Bedtime mode rather than in the Night Light control.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
- Choose Bedtime mode.
- Open the screen-options area and enable Grayscale.
- Set a bedtime routine or schedule so the mode starts and ends automatically.
Google’s current Pixel documentation says some steps work only on Android 14 and newer; its more detailed Bedtime mode screen-option instructions refer to Android 13 and later. Your manufacturer may expose grayscale under Accessibility, Digital Wellbeing, Modes and Routines, or another menu. Search the Settings app for “grayscale,” “bedtime,” or “color correction” if the documented path is absent.
Requirements and compatibility to check first
- Android version: Pixel instructions are not identical across releases. Google identifies some steps as Android 14-and-newer features, while its detailed Bedtime mode directions cover Android 13 and later.
- Manufacturer software: Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus and other brands can rename or relocate these controls. A missing Pixel menu does not necessarily mean the phone lacks a color filter.
- Permission and scheduling: The settings are built into Android; you do not need a separate app, account, subscription or accessory. Scheduling still depends on the phone’s clock and the options exposed by its software.
- Color-dependent tasks: Grayscale can make maps, photographs, shopping images and accessibility cues harder to interpret. Decide whether you need accurate color during the planned interval.
- Brightness: Night Light changes color balance, while brightness remains a separate control. Set both deliberately.
If a feature is absent, use the Settings search field for Night Light, eye comfort, grayscale, color correction or bedtime. Avoid assuming that “color inversion” is equivalent: inversion creates a negative-like image rather than a black-and-white display.
How to choose a setting in five minutes
Choose Night Light for visual comfort
- Your main complaint is glare or a cold-looking white screen.
- You read messages briefly and do not usually lose track of time.
- You need photographs, maps or other content to remain in color.
- You want an automatic sunset or custom-time schedule.
Start with a moderate warmth rather than the strongest available setting. Lower brightness until the display is readable without lighting up the room. If the phone still keeps you engaged, the problem is probably not color temperature alone.
Choose grayscale for a scrolling habit
- You repeatedly open colorful social feeds, short-video apps or games after intending to stop.
- Visual novelty, badges and thumbnails are stronger temptations than screen brightness.
- You are willing to tolerate black-and-white maps, photos and videos during the scheduled period.
Schedule grayscale through Bedtime mode instead of relying on memory. Keep the end time realistic: if it switches off before you actually go to bed, the cue disappears when you need it most.

Use both only as a personal experiment
Some devices let you run Night Light and grayscale together. That produces a monochrome display with a warmer tint, but no study has demonstrated an additive sleep benefit. Combine them only if the result is comfortable and makes it easier for you to stop using the phone.

Because there is no direct Night Light-versus-grayscale trial, a short personal comparison can answer which setting changes your own behavior. Keep the test behavioral rather than medical.
- Define the outcome. Pick one measurable question, such as “Do I stop browsing by 10:30 p.m.?” or “Does the screen feel less glaring while I send a final message?” Do not use a vague goal such as “sleep better.”
- Keep the schedule constant. Use the same start and end times on comparable nights. Keep brightness at a comfortable, repeatable level.
- Test Night Light first. Use it for several nights and record when you put the phone down, whether you resumed browsing, and how comfortable the display felt.
- Test grayscale next. Keep the schedule and brightness similar, then record the same observations.
- Compare behavior, not promises. If grayscale shortens browsing but makes essential tasks frustrating, it may be useful only during the final part of the evening. If Night Light improves comfort but does not change stopping time, pair it with a phone-free boundary.
Avoid changing multiple habits at once if you want to know which setting made a difference. The result is personal and does not establish a clinical effect.
Pair either filter with a stronger bedtime boundary
A display filter cannot stop an app from delivering notifications or a person from opening it. Add at least one non-filter control:
- Set a Bedtime mode schedule and enable Do Not Disturb or notification controls that your phone provides.
- Choose a specific “last check” time and place the phone out of reach afterward.
- Charge the phone away from the bed when you do not need it overnight.
- Use an alarm clock or another device if checking the time repeatedly restarts browsing.
- Keep brightness low enough that the screen does not illuminate the room, while remaining readable.
These steps address access and habit directly. Night Light and grayscale can support the routine, but neither replaces it.
Cost and what you do not need
Night Light and grayscale are built-in Android controls, so trying either one costs nothing on a compatible phone. This comparison does not require buying a new handset, screen protector, blue-light glasses, supplement or paid service. Those products cannot substitute for choosing a stopping time and reducing access to the phone. If your current device lacks one control, first check its Android version and manufacturer menus before spending money on an accessory or app.
Common problems and fixes
“I cannot find Night Light.”
Search Settings for “Night Light” or “blue light.” On a Pixel, check Settings > Display & touch and Quick Settings. A manufacturer may call the feature Eye comfort, Eye comfort shield or a similar name, and may place it elsewhere.

“Grayscale is missing from Bedtime mode.”
Confirm your Android version and look for a screen-options section inside Bedtime mode. Google’s documented instructions differ between Android releases, and some features are limited to Android 13 or 14 and later. Search for “grayscale,” “color correction” or “color inversion.” Do not confuse color inversion with grayscale: inversion produces a photographic negative, not black-and-white output.
“The schedule does not activate.”
Check the start and end times, the selected days, and whether another mode or automation overrides the schedule. Confirm that the phone’s date, time and time zone are automatic if you use sunset-to-sunrise scheduling. Test by setting a temporary schedule a few minutes ahead.

“Night Light makes the screen too orange.”
Reduce its intensity or choose a later start time. The setting is adjustable; maximum warmth is not required for the feature to be useful.
“Grayscale did not reduce my screen time.”
That outcome is possible. Grayscale changes appearance, not app limits or access. Add a bedtime boundary, notification controls or an app timer, and evaluate whether the combination changes when you stop using the phone.
“Photos and maps are hard to use in grayscale.”
Use grayscale only during the final wind-down interval, or turn it off temporarily for a task that depends on color. A routine that is too inconvenient is unlikely to last.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What neither setting can tell you
- Neither Night Light nor grayscale has been directly compared with the other in a clinical Android trial identified here.
- There is no reliable universal number for how many minutes of sleep either setting adds.
- Blue light alone has not been established as the sole cause of insomnia.
- Neither option diagnoses or treats a sleep disorder.
If difficulty falling or staying asleep persists, or daytime functioning is affected, seek advice from a qualified health professional rather than relying on a display filter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Android Night Light actually help you sleep?
It may make a cool screen more comfortable in dim light, but sleep evidence is mixed. A 2017 controlled study of 22 adults found no statistically significant melatonin or cortisol change, and no trial establishes Night Light as a treatment for insomnia.
Does grayscale make your phone less distracting?
It can remove the color cues that make feeds, badges and games visually rewarding. A 2024 one-week Android intervention found lower screen time but no improvement in self-reported sleep quality, so treat grayscale as a personal behavioral experiment rather than a guarantee.
How do I turn on grayscale at bedtime on Android?
On a Pixel, open Settings, choose Digital Wellbeing & parental controls, tap Bedtime mode, enable Grayscale in the screen options, and set a routine. Other manufacturers may place the control under Accessibility, color correction or a branded bedtime feature.

Some Android phones allow both. The result is a warmer monochrome display, but no study has shown that combining them provides an additive sleep benefit. Keep both only if the display is comfortable and helps you stop browsing.
What is the difference between grayscale and Dark theme?
Grayscale removes color while keeping light and dark tones. Dark theme changes bright backgrounds to darker ones but preserves color. They are separate controls and may be used independently.
Do I need to buy blue-light glasses or an app?
No. Night Light and grayscale are built-in settings on compatible Android devices. Check your phone’s Android version and manufacturer menus before purchasing anything; the more important additions are lower brightness, notification controls and a clear phone-away time.
What if I cannot find the setting on my phone?
Search Settings for Night Light, eye comfort, grayscale, color correction or bedtime. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android release. Google documents some Pixel steps for Android 13 and later and identifies certain steps as Android 14-and-newer features.
