Use a network reset when connectivity settings are the problem; use a factory reset only when you need to wipe the phone or resolve a serious software failure. A network reset removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and mobile-network configuration while leaving apps and personal files in place. A factory reset removes the phone’s on-device accounts, installed apps, settings, and locally stored data, returning it to the initial setup screen.

The exact menu names differ between Pixel, Galaxy, Xperia, and other Android phones. Read the confirmation screen for your model before proceeding, and make a backup and verify account credentials before any factory reset.

The difference in one view

Question Network reset Factory reset
Why use it? Repair Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, mobile-data, APN, or related connection problems. Resolve severe software instability, prepare a phone for transfer, or erase it before disposal.
What is removed? Saved network configuration and Bluetooth pairings; the precise categories depend on the phone maker and Android version. On-device accounts, installed apps, settings, and locally stored user data.
What remains? Apps, photos, messages, documents, and other personal content remain on the phone. Nothing stored locally is retained unless it is backed up and restored.
What must you do afterward? Reconnect to Wi‑Fi, re-enter passwords, and pair Bluetooth accessories again. Complete Android’s initial setup and restore backups; ownership verification may be required.
Data-loss risk Low: configuration is discarded, but user content is not. High: local data is erased and cannot be recovered without a usable backup.

Google’s Android Help gives the decisive warning: “Important: A factory reset erases all your data from your phone.” Samsung likewise describes a factory data reset as restoring factory settings and removing personal data, while its network-reset option does not erase apps or data (Google Android Help; Samsung support).

What an Android network reset erases

Saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords

The reset removes the phone’s remembered Wi‑Fi profiles. That includes network names, saved passwords, and the connection choices associated with those profiles. Your router, broadband service, and other devices are not changed. Afterward, select the network again and enter its password as if the phone had never joined it.

Bluetooth pairings

Previously paired headphones, cars, watches, keyboards, and other Bluetooth accessories are forgotten. The accessories themselves are not reset, but you must put them into pairing mode and establish each connection again.

Mobile-network and APN configuration

Mobile-data settings are returned to their default state for the device and carrier. Depending on the manufacturer, this can include cellular configuration, preferred network choices, and access-point-name (APN) entries. A custom APN or manually entered carrier setting may therefore need to be entered again. If your carrier normally provisions these values automatically, the phone should recreate them when it reconnects.

What it deliberately leaves alone

A network reset is not an uninstall operation and is not a storage wipe. Installed apps, app data, photos, videos, messages, downloads, documents, and other personal files stay on the phone. Samsung explicitly says that resetting Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile-network settings does not erase apps or data (Samsung support).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There can be additional small differences between manufacturers and Android releases. Sony notes that on Android 14, mobile-network reset and Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth reset actions may appear as separate choices. Treat the confirmation page on your model as authoritative: it should list the categories that will be discarded before you tap the final button.

What a factory reset erases

Accounts registered on the phone

The reset removes accounts from the device, including the Google account used for Android services. Removing an account from the phone does not delete the account itself or erase information stored in that provider’s cloud; it removes the local sign-in and synchronized copies from this handset. Android.com describes the reset as removing registered Google accounts, installed apps, and stored data from the device.

Installed apps and their local data

Every app installed from Google Play or another source is removed, along with its local settings, downloaded files, and data held only on the phone. You will need to reinstall apps after setup and sign in again. An app’s cloud backup can be restored only if that backup exists and you use the same account or service during setup.

Photos, messages, documents, and settings stored locally

Photos and videos saved on internal storage, text-message history, call history, downloads, locally saved documents, home-screen arrangements, accessibility choices, alarms, and system preferences are erased. A factory reset is therefore not a troubleshooting shortcut for a single connection problem.

What the reset does not promise to preserve

Anything that exists only on the handset is at risk. A reset is irreversible for data that has not been copied elsewhere. A cloud service may still hold synchronized information, but you must confirm that synchronization or a separate backup completed before wiping the phone.

Which reset should you choose?

Choose a network reset when the symptom is connection-specific

  • Wi‑Fi repeatedly refuses to join, disconnects, or reports an authentication problem after the router and password have been checked.
  • Bluetooth accessories will not pair or reconnect even after both devices have been restarted.
  • Mobile data, roaming, or a manually configured APN behaves incorrectly.
  • You want to clear damaged network configuration without touching applications or personal files.

Try ordinary troubleshooting before either reset

  1. Restart the phone.
  2. Confirm that other devices can use the same Wi‑Fi network and that the mobile carrier has service in your location.
  3. Check the password, airplane-mode state, SIM or eSIM status, and any carrier outage information.
  4. Update Android and the affected app or accessory firmware when updates are available.
  5. Forget only the problematic Wi‑Fi network or remove the individual Bluetooth pairing, then reconnect.

If those targeted actions fail and the problem remains limited to connectivity, a network reset is the lower-risk escalation.

Consider a factory reset only for a serious or intentional wipe

  • The phone remains broadly unstable after updates and less-destructive troubleshooting.
  • You cannot unlock or use the operating system normally and the manufacturer’s supported recovery process requires a wipe.
  • You are selling, returning, donating, or transferring the phone and need to remove local content.

Do not use a factory reset merely to repair one Wi‑Fi password or a single Bluetooth accessory. It creates a backup, setup, and reinstallation project that a network reset avoids.

How to perform a network reset safely

Menu wording and placement vary by model and software. Use the path that matches your phone and read the final confirmation list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common Pixel and other near-stock Android path

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap System, then Reset options.
  3. Choose Reset Wi‑Fi, mobile & Bluetooth or the similarly worded network-reset option.
  4. Review the categories shown, authenticate with your screen lock if asked, and confirm.
  5. Restart if the phone does not do so automatically, then join Wi‑Fi and pair accessories again.

Common Samsung Galaxy path

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General management, then Reset.
  3. Select Reset network settings.
  4. Review the warning and tap Reset settings; enter your PIN, pattern, or password if requested.
  5. Reconnect to each Wi‑Fi network and Bluetooth device.

Some Android 14 phones show separate controls for mobile-network settings and Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth settings. If you see two choices, reset only the category related to the fault first.

What to record before confirming

  • Wi‑Fi passwords that are not available from your password manager or router label.
  • Custom APN values supplied by your carrier.
  • Bluetooth devices that require a manufacturer-specific pairing procedure.
  • Any corporate or school network settings that an administrator will need to provide again.

How to prepare for a factory reset

Back up what you cannot replace

Use Android’s backup controls and the backup feature in each service that contains important information. Check that the backup has completed recently rather than assuming that a switch being enabled means every file is already copied. Manually export files that are excluded from your normal backup, such as downloads or data kept inside a specialized app.

  • Open the phone’s backup settings and review the most recent backup time.
  • Confirm that photos and videos have finished uploading to the photo service you use.
  • Export authenticator seeds, recovery codes, or other sign-in material that cannot be recreated after the wipe.
  • Copy documents and recordings to a computer or another secure location.
  • Check messaging apps for their own backup and restore controls.

Verify every credential needed after the wipe

Google requires account information to restore data after a reset. Confirm the Google Account username and password now, while the phone is still unlocked. If the phone uses an account from its manufacturer, keep those credentials available as well; Samsung may request Samsung-account credentials during the process.

Make sure the phone can complete setup

Charge the battery, keep a working SIM or eSIM if mobile service is needed, and know the Wi‑Fi password for the location where you will set up the phone. Without network access, account verification and backup restoration may be delayed.

For a sale or transfer

Move your files and accounts first, then start the reset from the normal Settings app whenever possible. Keep the phone with you until the welcome or initial-setup screen appears. A reset started through an alternative recovery method can trigger stricter ownership checks, so the original owner should be available to complete verification.

How to perform a factory reset

Common Pixel and other near-stock Android path

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap System, then Reset options.
  3. Choose Erase all data (factory reset).
  4. Read the list of accounts and data to be removed. Enter the screen lock when prompted.
  5. Tap the final confirmation and wait without interrupting the restart.

Common Samsung Galaxy path

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General management, then Reset.
  3. Select Factory data reset.
  4. Review the account and data summary, then tap Reset or Delete all, depending on the software version.
  5. Enter the requested screen-lock or Samsung-account credentials and allow the phone to reboot.

Names, order, and confirmation wording can change with the model, carrier edition, and Android release. If your screen offers a different path, search Settings for “factory reset” and rely on the page that explicitly says all data will be erased.

What happens after a factory reset

The phone starts at initial setup

You will see the welcome or setup flow rather than your old home screen. Select a language, connect to Wi‑Fi or mobile data, accept the displayed terms, and sign in when prompted. Restore a backup only after confirming that you are using the account that created it.

Factory Reset Protection can require the former Google account

Android’s Factory Reset Protection (FRP) is an ownership safeguard. Samsung says the phone may ask for the Google Account previously registered on it after a reset, particularly when the reset was performed by a method other than the Settings option. This is expected security behavior, not evidence that the reset failed. The legitimate owner must complete the verification; a factory reset is not a way to bypass a forgotten account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apps and settings return gradually

Restored apps may download in the background, and each app can require a fresh sign-in. Settings that were not included in backup—such as some notification choices, local files, or device-specific preferences—must be recreated manually.

After a network reset: reconnect and diagnose

  1. Join a known-good Wi‑Fi network and test a web page.
  2. Pair one Bluetooth accessory at a time, starting with the accessory you need most.
  3. Test mobile data with Wi‑Fi turned off; if it fails, check the SIM/eSIM and carrier APN instructions.
  4. Install any pending system update and restart once more.
  5. If only one network fails, test another network to distinguish a phone configuration issue from a router or carrier issue.

If connections still fail everywhere after the reset, the cause may be the router, carrier, SIM/eSIM, radio hardware, account provisioning, or a broader software fault. Escalate to the carrier or device manufacturer rather than repeating the same reset.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Confusing “forget network” with “reset network settings”

Forgetting one Wi‑Fi network affects only that profile. A network reset clears the phone’s broader Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile configuration. Use the smaller action first when one network is the only problem.

Expecting a network reset to remove malware or a troublesome app

Because apps and their data remain, a network reset cannot remove an unwanted app, repair corrupted application data, or clear a device-wide software failure. Uninstall the suspect app or use the manufacturer’s supported troubleshooting path instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Starting a factory reset without the Google password

After the wipe, setup can stop at account verification. Recover the account while the phone is still usable; do not assume that a new Google account will satisfy FRP.

Assuming a backup exists because synchronization is enabled

Synchronization status and a complete device backup are not identical. Check timestamps, open the backup details, and make an independent copy of irreplaceable files before confirming the reset.

Following instructions from another phone model

Android is not one uniform interface. Pixel, Galaxy, Xperia, and carrier-customized phones can separate network controls or use different labels. Read your model’s current support instructions and the on-screen warning instead of tapping through a familiar-looking menu.

Decision checklist

  • Only connectivity is broken: restart, check the network or carrier, then use the relevant network reset.
  • Apps and files must remain: do not choose factory reset.
  • The phone is unstable everywhere or must be handed to someone else: back up first, verify Google and manufacturer credentials, then use the factory-reset option in Settings.
  • The reset was completed: expect Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth reconnection after a network reset, or the full setup flow and possible FRP verification after a factory reset.
