Sometimes—but not on every phone or playback route. Android’s normal audio path can mix sources and apply volume control and effects. USB bit-perfect playback is an optional capability on supported Android 14 implementations, while Bluetooth audio is encoded using a codec supported by both the phone and headphones. A lossless file alone does not guarantee that the signal reaching your headphones remains bit-for-bit unchanged.
What “lossless” does—and does not—tell you
Lossless describes the source file: its audio data can be decoded without losing information from the original encoding. It does not, by itself, describe every step after playback begins. The app, Android’s output route, the phone’s audio implementation, and the connected device can all affect the signal.
A useful distinction is between a lossless file and a bit-perfect playback path. Bit-perfect means the digital stream reaches the output without changes such as sample-rate conversion, volume scaling, effects, or mixing. Whether that happens depends on the route and support across the playback chain.
USB audio: bit-perfect playback is optional
For USB output, Android’s usual framework behavior includes mixing audio sources and applying volume control and effects. Android 14 also provides preferred mixer attributes for USB devices. An optional BIT_PERFECT mode can direct a supported implementation to send audio without volume scaling, sample-rate conversion, audio effects, or DSP mixing. In that mode, volume control is handled by the hardware instead.

This is not a universal switch that every Android phone or music player supports. The phone’s audio hardware abstraction layer (HAL) must implement the capability, the playback app must request it, and the DAC must be recognized as the output. A USB-C DAC dongle can provide a wired output, but it cannot add missing app or phone support.
What to check on a USB setup
- Confirm that Android routes playback to the USB DAC rather than the phone speaker or another output.
- Check whether the player documents support for bit-perfect or Android USB preferred mixer attributes.
- Look for device-specific information about USB audio and HAL support; Android’s API availability alone does not establish that a particular phone implements the mode.
- Check how volume works. In bit-perfect mode, the hardware rather than Android’s software volume scaling controls it.

Bluetooth: the codec is negotiated, not guaranteed by the music label
With Bluetooth, Android selects a codec that both the phone and the receiving device support, then sends audio through the selected codec’s encoder. Codec support and priority depend on device implementations. A music service’s “lossless” label describes the source or service tier; it does not prove that the Bluetooth link is transmitting that audio losslessly.

Check the active codec if your phone exposes it, and verify support on both the phone and headphones. A codec name alone is not enough to establish that a particular connection is bit-perfect or lossless. Android’s Bluetooth documentation describes codec negotiation and routing in Bluetooth services.

aptX Lossless is a conditional exception
Qualcomm says aptX Lossless can provide CD-quality 16-bit/44.1 kHz lossless playback when link conditions permit. Its announcement also says the system scales down when radio-frequency conditions are congested. Both the transmitting phone and receiving headphones need compatible support, and the actual connection must be using that mode. This is Qualcomm’s product claim, not a general guarantee about Bluetooth audio.
Qualcomm announced the technology on August 31, 2021, and described its conditions in its aptX Lossless announcement.

LE Audio is a different Bluetooth route
Android 13 includes built-in support for Bluetooth LE Audio, and Android identifies LC3 as its default codec. That support does not establish that a connection is bit-perfect lossless. Confirm that both devices are actually using LE Audio, then consult their documentation for the specific fidelity claim. Android’s overview is Bluetooth Low Energy Audio.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Diagnose the route before changing settings
- Identify the output. Determine whether playback goes through USB to a DAC or over Bluetooth. These routes have different constraints.
- For USB, verify the whole chain. Check the app, phone implementation, DAC recognition, and whether bit-perfect mode is supported and requested.
- For Bluetooth, verify both ends and the active connection. Confirm codec compatibility and, for a lossless claim such as aptX Lossless, whether the connection is actually using that mode under current radio conditions.
- Do not treat a higher sample-rate setting as proof. The documentation cited here does not establish that changing Android Developer options makes playback bit-perfect.
Does Android often resample lossless music, or will you hear the difference?
The available documentation establishes that Android’s ordinary mixer can process audio and that optional USB bit-perfect behavior exists; it does not establish how often phones resample lossless playback across the Android ecosystem. Nor does it establish a universal audible effect. A specification or codec label alone cannot tell you whether a listener will hear a difference in a particular setup.
