Short answer: iPhone has a documented Lock Screen widget location through Apple’s WidgetKit. Android support is device- and software-dependent: Google documents the feature on Pixel Tablet, while Android 15 makes lock-screen widgets optional and a March 2025 Android Developers FAQ described wider Android Open Source Project (AOSP) availability as a future rollout. You cannot safely assume that an Android phone supports the feature without checking its exact model and version.
The two platforms also use different terms for related Lock Screen features. A widget surfaces compact information or a quick action; an iPhone control is an action button or toggle, and a Live Activity shows changing information about an ongoing event. Those experiences should not be treated as interchangeable.

What “Lock Screen widgets” means on each platform
iPhone: WidgetKit widgets on the Lock Screen
Apple documents the iPhone Lock Screen as a location for WidgetKit widgets. A widget presents a small amount of timely, personally relevant information and may offer a quick action without opening the full app. What appears depends on the individual app: Apple’s platform documentation does not mean every installed app supplies a Lock Screen widget.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Examples of suitable widget content include a compact status, a glanceable value, or an app-defined shortcut. The app developer chooses the information and actions, and the system determines how that content is displayed within the available Lock Screen space.

Android: a capability that depends on the implementation
Android does not provide a universal promise that every phone has Lock Screen widgets. Google’s Pixel Tablet help documentation describes widgets such as Clock, Timer, and Weather appearing while the tablet is locked. That is direct evidence for the Pixel Tablet implementation, not proof of identical behavior on every Android phone, tablet, or manufacturer skin.
The Android 15 Compatibility Definition Document says device implementations “MAY support application widgets on the lock screen.” “MAY” makes the capability optional: manufacturers can ship a compliant Android 15 device without exposing lock-screen widgets.
Availability: the most important difference
| Question | iPhone | Android |
|---|---|---|
| Is a Lock Screen widget location documented? | Yes. Apple documents Lock Screen widgets as a WidgetKit location. | Yes for implementations that provide the capability; Android 15 lists support as optional. |
| Can you assume every device supports it? | Apple’s documentation establishes the platform location, but individual apps still may not offer a widget. | No. Check the exact model, Android version, and manufacturer software. |
| Concrete official setup instructions | Not stated in the cited Apple capability documentation. | Google provides instructions for Pixel Tablet. |
| Evidence for a universal phone rollout | Not applicable to the Android rollout question. | Not established. A March 6, 2025 Android Developers FAQ described broader AOSP availability as a planned release after Android 16 QPR1, not as a guarantee for every current phone. |
This distinction prevents a common buying and troubleshooting mistake: seeing a feature on one Android device and assuming it is part of Android everywhere. On Android, the manufacturer’s implementation and software build are decisive.

Glanceable information
WidgetKit is designed for small, timely pieces of information rather than a full app interface. A widget can let you check a value or status from the Lock Screen, reducing the need to unlock the phone and navigate through an app. The exact content, refresh behavior, and available sizes are controlled by the app and Apple’s widget system.
Quick actions without opening the app
Some widgets expose an app-defined action directly. The action is still limited to what that widget supports; a widget is not a general-purpose replacement for the app. If an app has no WidgetKit Lock Screen widget, it cannot be added merely because the app is installed.
Do not confuse widgets with controls
Apple separately documents Lock Screen controls. A control is a button or toggle intended to perform an action, whereas a widget primarily presents information and may provide a quick action. Calling every button on the Lock Screen a widget obscures how the system and app APIs work.
Do not confuse widgets with Live Activities
A Live Activity presents ongoing, up-to-date content, such as the state of an event that is currently in progress. It is a different WidgetKit-related experience from a static or periodically refreshed Lock Screen widget. An app can support one, both, or neither.

How Pixel Tablet Lock Screen widgets work
Google’s official instructions apply to Google Pixel Tablet. They describe a separate widget screen that appears while the tablet is locked, rather than establishing a gesture or layout rule for all Android devices.
Turn the feature on
- Open Settings on the Pixel Tablet.
- Open Hub mode.
- Tap Lock Screen.
- Enable the Lock Screen widget feature.
Menu wording can change with software updates. If the setting is missing, confirm that the device is a Pixel Tablet and check for system updates before assuming the hardware lacks support.
Open the widget screen while locked
From the locked Pixel Tablet screen, swipe from the right edge to reach the widget screen. Google documents this gesture for Pixel Tablet; do not use it as an Android-wide instruction.
Add, remove, and reorder widgets
- Open the widget screen with the right-edge swipe.
- Use the screen’s management controls to add an available widget.
- Remove widgets you do not want displayed.
- Reorder the remaining widgets to change their sequence.
Google documents resizing only for select apps. A resize handle or equivalent option may therefore be absent for a particular widget even when adding, removing, and reordering are available.

Turn the feature off or clear the screen
You can disable the Lock Screen widget feature in the same Pixel Tablet settings area. Removing every widget also leaves the Lock Screen without widgets. Those are two different outcomes: one disables the experience, while the other leaves it enabled but empty.
What each platform can show and how you manage it
The practical feature set is determined by both the operating system and the app. On iPhone, an app must ship a WidgetKit Lock Screen widget before it can be selected. The widget may show a status or value and may expose an app-defined shortcut, but it is not a miniature version of every app screen. Apple’s capability documentation does not promise a particular number of widgets, a universal size set, or a common refresh schedule across apps.
On Pixel Tablet, Google specifically names Clock, Timer, and Weather as examples of widgets that can provide content while the tablet is locked. The documented management model is a dedicated widget screen: you can add, remove, and reorder entries, and resize only widgets from apps that support resizing. Tapping a widget lets you use it from that locked-screen experience, subject to the device and app’s own behavior.

For other Android devices, none of those Pixel Tablet details should be assumed. The manufacturer may expose a different panel, gesture, set of default widgets, or management screen. The March 2025 Android Developers FAQ explicitly says original equipment manufacturers can customize the trigger and set default widgets. Two devices with similar Android versions can therefore feel different even when both advertise lock-screen widget support.
Requirements, limits, and common pitfalls
- Model matters: “Android phone” is not a sufficient specification. Record the exact model and regional variant.
- Version matters: Android 15’s compatibility document makes the capability optional. A current Android version number alone does not prove that the setting exists.
- App support matters on both platforms: Installing an app does not create a Lock Screen widget if the developer did not provide one.
- Pixel instructions are device-specific: The right-edge swipe and Hub mode menu are documented for Pixel Tablet, not for Android generally.
- Third-party apps cannot manufacture a missing system surface: A widget app can provide content only where the device exposes a supported Lock Screen location.
- Related features are not substitutes: An iPhone control and a Live Activity can appear on or near the Lock Screen but have different purposes and APIs.
- Roadmaps age: The AOSP statement from March 6, 2025 is a dated plan, not proof of present support on a particular handset.
Does your Android phone support Lock Screen widgets?
The reliable answer requires three pieces of information:
- Exact model: “Android phone” is not a sufficient device description. Manufacturers can implement optional platform capabilities differently.
- Android release and build: Android 15’s compatibility rules make lock-screen widget support optional, and later releases may change the implementation.
- Manufacturer software: The system interface, trigger gesture, privacy controls, and default widgets can be customized by the device maker.
Look in the phone’s own Settings and Lock Screen customization screens for a widget option, then consult the manufacturer’s support page for that model and build. The absence of an option is meaningful evidence that the feature is not exposed on that installation; installing a third-party widget app cannot create a system Lock Screen surface that the manufacturer did not implement.
What the 2025 Android roadmap did—and did not—say
In an Android Developers FAQ dated March 6, 2025, Product Manager Tyler Beneke and Software Engineer Lucas Silva wrote: “Lock screen widgets will be available in AOSP for tablets and mobile starting with the release after Android 16 (QPR1).” The statement was a roadmap for AOSP availability at that date, not a promise that every phone would receive the feature immediately or that every manufacturer would enable it.
The same FAQ said original equipment manufacturers could customize the trigger for the experience and could set default widgets. Consequently, two devices running related Android versions may expose different gestures, default content, or settings. Because the statement is dated, verify the current software documentation for a phone before treating the roadmap as its present capability.
Placement and interaction compared
| Capability | iPhone Lock Screen widgets | Pixel Tablet implementation | Other Android devices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where content appears | On the iPhone Lock Screen as a WidgetKit location. | On a separate widget screen reached from the locked screen. | Not stated; depends on the device implementation. |
| How it is opened | Apple’s cited capability documentation does not specify a universal user gesture. | Swipe from the right edge while locked. | Not stated; the Android Developers FAQ says manufacturers may customize the trigger. |
| Available management | Individual app offerings and Apple’s Lock Screen system determine what can be added. | Add, remove, and reorder widgets; resize widgets only for select apps. | Not stated; do not assume Pixel Tablet controls exist. |
| Typical interaction model | Glanceable information and app-defined quick actions. | Glanceable content and tapping a widget to use it while the tablet is locked. | Not stated until the manufacturer documents the feature. |
Privacy and authentication considerations
Lock Screen content is visible before a full unlock, so choose widgets according to the information you are comfortable displaying nearby. A calendar, timer, weather reading, or device status may be harmless in one setting but sensitive in another. The cited platform material establishes the widget capability, not a universal privacy policy for every app or device.
Whether tapping a widget reveals more information, requires authentication, or opens an app is controlled by the operating system and app implementation. Treat a lock-screen shortcut as a convenience, not as proof that the underlying action bypasses the device’s security model.

Choosing between the platforms for this feature
Choose iPhone when predictable platform availability matters
Apple’s documentation gives developers a defined WidgetKit Lock Screen location. That makes the platform’s basic capability easier to reason about: you still need an app that supplies a widget, but the operating-system location is documented rather than optional per device implementation.
Choose an Android device only after checking the model
Android can provide a useful lock-screen widget experience, as the Pixel Tablet documentation demonstrates. However, the feature is not a safe basis for a blanket “Android supports this” claim. Confirm the exact device’s settings, software version, and manufacturer documentation. If the feature is essential, ask for a demonstration on the same model and build you intend to use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose based on the interaction you actually need
If you need a compact status and an app-defined shortcut, either platform may fit where the required app exposes the feature. If you need an ongoing, changing event display on iPhone, look for a Live Activity rather than a widget. If you need a button or toggle, look for an iPhone control. On Android, first establish that the device exposes any lock-screen widget surface at all.
Product and purchasing context
Google Pixel Tablet is a concrete, documented hardware example for the Android experience. Its documentation is useful when you are evaluating the feature, but the existence of lock-screen widgets is not by itself a recommendation to buy that tablet. The platform material does not establish a universal device price, subscription fee, or support policy for other manufacturers. If you publish a product link or affiliate reference, verify the current listing and the applicable program before using it.
For an organization standardizing devices, test the exact shipping build rather than relying on an Android version label. Record the available trigger, default widgets, add/remove controls, resizing behavior, and what appears before authentication. Those details are implementation choices and may change with an over-the-air update.

No widgets appear on an iPhone Lock Screen
- Check whether the specific app offers a WidgetKit Lock Screen widget; installation alone does not guarantee one.
- Distinguish the missing item from a control or Live Activity, since those are separate experiences.
- Install available app and system updates, then revisit the Lock Screen customization interface.
No widget option appears on a Pixel Tablet
- Confirm that you are using Google Pixel Tablet, the device covered by Google’s instructions.
- Check Settings > Hub mode > Lock Screen and enable the feature.
- Update the tablet if the documented setting is absent or behaves differently.
- Remember that an empty widget screen can result from removing every widget, even when the feature remains enabled.
No widget option appears on another Android device
- Record the exact model, Android version, and manufacturer software version.
- Search that manufacturer’s support documentation for “Lock Screen widgets” rather than relying on instructions for Pixel Tablet.
- Check whether the device maker uses a different trigger or a separate panel; the Android Developers FAQ says OEMs may customize the trigger.
- Do not infer support from Android version alone: Android 15 lists the capability as optional.
What is likely to change
The March 2025 Android Developers FAQ described a planned AOSP release after Android 16 QPR1 for tablets and mobile. As releases and manufacturer updates arrive, menu names and device coverage may change. That roadmap should be treated as a dated statement of intent. For a purchase, deployment, or support decision, the authoritative answer is the current documentation and settings for the specific device.
Apple’s WidgetKit documentation similarly describes the platform capability, not a permanent catalog of every app’s widgets. App developers can add, remove, or change their widget offerings independently of Apple’s general feature documentation.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: iPhone offers a documented WidgetKit Lock Screen location, but each app must provide a compatible widget. Android support is optional and implementation-specific: Pixel Tablet has documented Clock, Timer, and Weather widgets with a right-edge widget screen, while other phones require model-by-model verification. Treat controls and Live Activities as separate iPhone features, and never infer Android support from the operating-system version alone.
