Before installing an Android launcher, verify the developer and download source, then audit both ordinary app permissions and Special app access. Approve a request only when it matches a feature you intend to use. Treat Accessibility access, display-over-other-apps, and all-files access as high-impact settings—not routine setup steps. After installation, use Privacy Dashboard (when available) to review what the launcher actually accessed.
Android menus differ by manufacturer and release, so the labels below are waypoints rather than a universal script. If a launcher cannot explain a sensitive request in plain language, leave it disabled and keep your current Home app.
What an Android launcher can do
A launcher is the software that presents the Home screen, app drawer, widgets, wallpaper controls and often app search. Android shows the Home screen when no app is open. The built-in launcher already has the privileges needed for core Home-screen behavior; a third-party launcher may ask for additional access to reproduce features that are not exposed through ordinary Home-screen APIs.
To inspect built-in Home-screen options, touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen and open Home settings (the wording can differ). Android Help notes that the exact steps vary by device. This is useful before installing anything: you may already have the grid size, icon labels, gesture or widget option you wanted.

There is no universal “launcher permission list.” One app may need only the ability to become the default Home app and discover installed apps. Another may offer automation, notification badges, an overlay, cloud backup or a gesture system that requires additional access. Judge every request against the feature, not against the word “launcher.”
Pre-install checks: source, developer and disclosure
Confirm who published the app
Open the developer’s official site from a source you already trust, then match the developer name, support address and app identity in the store listing. Look for a consistent package name, update history and a privacy policy that describes data collection and sharing. Reviews can reveal crashes or intrusive behavior, but they are not proof of safety; weigh patterns and recent reports rather than a single rating.
Prefer a trusted store and keep Play Protect enabled
Google’s Pixel support guidance recommends Google Play and explains that Play Protect checks apps for potentially harmful behavior. That check is a useful layer, not a guarantee that an app is appropriate for your privacy choices. If you install an APK from another source, Android may require you to allow that source to install unknown apps. Turn that install permission off again as soon as the installation is complete. A sideloaded app may also trigger Android’s restricted-settings protections.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRead the listing for feature-to-access explanations
Before tapping Install, write down the features you actually want: for example, an app drawer, a gesture, a backup, an unread indicator or a visual overlay. During setup, compare each request with that list. A request with no visible connection is a reason to stop, search the developer’s documentation and postpone the grant.
- Check the developer identity, package name and support channels.
- Read the current privacy disclosure and recent reviews.
- Note whether the app is from Google Play or a sideloaded source.
- Decide which launcher features you will use before responding to prompts.
- Do not treat a setup wizard’s “recommended” button as evidence that a permission is required.
Audit ordinary permissions after installation
Android separates normal runtime permissions from more sensitive special access. Start with the launcher’s app-information page rather than accepting every prompt in sequence.
- Open Settings and then Apps (some devices say Apps & notifications).
- Select the launcher. If it is not listed, use Settings search for its name.
- Open Permissions and note both allowed and denied items. Menu names and grouping vary by Android release.
- For each permission, ask: “Which feature of this launcher uses this, and will I use that feature?” If the answer is unclear, choose Don’t allow or leave the setting unchanged.
- Open the launcher and test the functions you care about. A denial that breaks one optional feature does not automatically justify granting every other request.
Android’s permission model gives you control over these grants. Android Help also warns that harmful apps can request settings that put data at risk, so an explanation should be specific rather than “the app needs it to work.”

Accessibility access: the permission that deserves the most scrutiny
Accessibility access is unusually powerful. Google’s restricted-settings guidance explains that an app with Accessibility access may read screen content and interact with apps on your behalf. That can expose information displayed by other apps and can enable actions you did not manually perform.
Accessibility is not automatically malicious, and it is not automatically necessary for a launcher. A launcher that offers a feature involving screen reading, automated interaction or system-wide gesture handling should explain exactly what the service does, when it runs and how to disable it. A visual icon pack or a conventional app drawer, by itself, is not an explanation for reading other apps’ screens.
Questions to answer before enabling it
- What named feature stops working without Accessibility?
- Does the developer document what information the service can read?
- Does it operate continuously, only after a gesture, or only while a particular tool is open?
- Can you enable the feature temporarily and turn the service off afterward?
- Do you trust the developer enough to allow interaction with other apps?
On Android 13 and later, some settings are restricted for sideloaded apps. Google advises enabling restricted settings only when you trust the developer, because they can expose sensitive information. If a sideloaded launcher instructs you to bypass a warning, pause and verify the app’s source and documentation first.
How to review or revoke Accessibility
Open Settings and search for Accessibility, then look for the installed or downloaded-app services list. Select the launcher to see its toggle and description. Manufacturer labels differ, so use the Settings search box if the service is not where you expect. Turn the service off, return to the Home screen and test whether only the dependent feature stops working. If the launcher remains usable, leave Accessibility disabled.
Special app access is separate from normal permissions
Android Developers lists special permissions such as exact alarms, drawing over other apps and all-files access. They are not granted through the ordinary permission dialog. The usual route is Settings > Apps > Special app access, although a manufacturer may rename or reorganize the screens. Select a category and inspect whether the launcher is listed.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

|---|---|---|
| Display over other apps | Content that remains visible above another app. | Ask which visible launcher feature needs an overlay and whether you want that feature. Leave it off if the explanation is vague. |
| All files access | Broad storage access beyond ordinary, user-selected files. | Treat it as exceptional. Google Play policy limits broad storage access to eligible apps for essential core functionality; do not presume a launcher qualifies or needs it. |
| Exact alarms | Precisely timed scheduled actions. | Approve only if you intentionally use a documented, time-critical launcher function. A basic Home screen does not establish a need. |
| Other categories | Device-specific controls that Android classifies as special access. | Read the category description and the developer’s feature explanation before changing the toggle. |
Because there is no ordinary permission dialog for these grants, a launcher can send you directly to a Settings page. That redirect is not proof that the grant is required. You can return without enabling it, finish setup and test the launcher first.

Runtime permissions: evaluate the feature, not the category
Android does not define a permission bundle that every launcher should receive. Depending on its features, an app might request notifications, photos and videos, contacts, location, microphone, camera, phone, nearby-device or other runtime permissions. None is automatically justified by the fact that an app replaces the Home screen.
| Request you see | Feature connection to look for | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Notifications | Notification badges, launcher alerts or a notification panel supplied by the app. | Grant only if you want those alerts and understand that notification content may be visible to the app. |
| Contacts | Contact search or contact shortcuts inside the launcher. | Prefer a limited or selected-data option when Android offers one; otherwise deny until you need the feature. |
| Photos and videos | Wallpaper picker, backup or image-based customization. | Use Android’s photo picker or selected-item access when available instead of broad library access. |
| Location, microphone or camera | A clearly named widget, voice action, location-aware panel or camera shortcut supplied by the launcher. | Check whether the feature works only while in use. A general Home screen is not a reason by itself. |
| Phone, SMS or nearby devices | A documented dialer, messaging, calling-device or accessory integration. | Require a specific explanation and deny if you do not use that integration. |
If Android offers While using the app, Ask every time or a selected-items option, choose the narrowest setting that supports the feature. Revisit the permission after a few days rather than granting permanent access during first-run setup.
Installed-app visibility and app-drawer behavior
A launcher normally has to discover installed apps to populate an app drawer and search results. Google Play treats installed-app inventory as sensitive and limits broad visibility through QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES to narrow, eligible use cases. That policy does not mean every launcher request is improper, nor does it prove that a particular app complies.
Distinguish two situations:
- Normal discovery: the launcher can see the apps it needs for its core drawer or search function through Android’s available mechanisms.
- Broad inventory: the app requests visibility of essentially all installed packages, which deserves an explanation tied to a core feature.
If the app drawer is empty after you deny a visibility-related request, check the developer’s documentation and the launcher’s in-app settings. You can decide whether universal app search is worth the additional visibility; do not enable a broad grant merely to complete a setup checklist.
Use Privacy Dashboard as a retrospective check
Privacy Dashboard shows which apps accessed permission-protected data and when, making it useful after the launcher has been running for a while. On supported devices, open Settings, then Security & privacy or Privacy, and choose Privacy Dashboard. Select a permission category to view the apps and timestamps, then choose an app to change its grant. The exact route and available categories depend on the manufacturer and Android release.
Google’s help documentation describes a seven-day activity window on Android 13 and a 24-hour window on Android 12. Do not assume an older phone records the same period, and do not treat the dashboard as a complete log of every special-access setting. Use the app-information and Special app access pages for the current state of those grants.

A useful review cycle is: install with only the minimum access, use the launcher normally for a day or two, inspect the dashboard, then revoke anything that has no connection to the features you kept. This is a practical use of Android’s controls, not a claim that every launcher will continue working after every revocation.

Private Space changes what a launcher can legitimately display. Android 15’s developer guidance says a launcher that shows Private Space apps must hold the default ROLE_HOME role and declare ACCESS_HIDDEN_PROFILES. It must provide a separate container and keep Private Space apps undiscoverable while the space is locked.
For a user, the important questions are whether the launcher supports Private Space at all, where it places the separate container and whether locking the space removes those apps from search, suggestions, widgets and the app drawer. These are platform requirements for this feature, not evidence that a particular launcher implements them correctly. If Private Space is important to you, read the launcher’s Android 15 documentation and test with a non-sensitive app before moving confidential apps into it.

Changing launchers is optional. Compare the built-in Home app and the third-party candidate on the feature you actually need and the access each one requests.
| Decision factor | Keep the current launcher when… | Consider a third-party launcher when… |
|---|---|---|
| Customization | Its grid, icons, gestures and widgets already meet your needs. | A specific customization is unavailable and the new app explains its access requirements. |
| Permissions | You prefer the smaller, already-established access surface. | Every additional request has a feature-based reason you accept. |
| Privacy disclosures | The alternative’s developer, source or policy is unclear. | You can identify the publisher and understand its data practices. |
| Android integration | You rely on features such as Private Space and want the platform’s default behavior. | The launcher documents support for the Android features you use. |
| Reversibility | You do not want to troubleshoot a new Home app. | You can test it, switch back through the default-app setting and uninstall if it is not a fit. |
Android lets you change the default Home app through the device’s default-app settings, although the label and location vary. Before switching, make sure you know how to return to the existing launcher.
Common warning signs and fixes
The setup wizard insists on Accessibility
Exit the wizard and identify the feature that allegedly requires it. Read the developer’s explanation, inspect the Accessibility service description and test the launcher without the service. If the core Home screen works, leave the service off; if the feature is essential to you, enable it only after deciding that the capability and developer are trustworthy.

An overlay request appears for a simple visual feature
Return to Settings > Apps > Special app access > Display over other apps (wording varies). Ask what must remain above other apps. A wallpaper, icon or grid customization that does not need a persistent overlay should not be treated as a reason to grant one.
Android blocks a setting after sideloading
Android 13 and later can restrict certain settings for apps installed outside a trusted store. Do not bypass the warning reflexively. Verify the APK source, developer identity and requested capability. If you proceed, enable only the setting you understand, then turn off the source’s “allow installs” permission afterward.
The app drawer is missing apps
Check whether you denied an app-visibility request and whether the launcher has a filter, hidden-app list or work-profile setting. Read the app’s help page before granting broad package visibility. If universal discovery is not worth the trade-off, use the built-in launcher or another configuration that works with narrower access.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Private Space apps remain visible while locked
Lock Private Space and inspect the launcher’s drawer, search, suggestions and widgets. If apps remain discoverable, disable the launcher’s Private Space integration, switch to a launcher that documents compliant behavior or use the system launcher. Do not store sensitive apps in that space until the behavior meets your expectations.
A practical approval rule
Approve a launcher request only when four conditions are true:
- You know the exact feature that uses the access.
- The developer’s identity and installation source are trustworthy to you.
- You understand what the permission can expose or change.
- You can revoke the setting or switch Home apps if the result is unsatisfactory.
If any condition is missing, defer the request. You can finish evaluating a launcher with fewer grants, observe its behavior in Privacy Dashboard where available and make a deliberate decision later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I try a launcher without making it the default Home app?
Yes. Install and open it, test its settings and widgets, and switch the default Home app only when you are ready. Keep the existing launcher available so you can return through the device’s default-app settings if needed.
Does Play Protect prove that a launcher is safe?
No. Play Protect checks for potentially harmful behavior, but it does not replace reviewing the developer, privacy disclosure, permissions and special access the launcher requests.
Why do the Settings paths in this guide differ from my phone?
Android manufacturers and releases rename and reorganize menus. Use Settings search for terms such as Apps, Special app access, Accessibility and Privacy Dashboard when the exact path is different.
