For one-handed typing, start with Gboard or Microsoft SwiftKey: both document a compact layout that shifts to one side. For two-thumb typing on a large phone, foldable, tablet, or in landscape, SwiftKey is the clearer documented choice because it offers a split Thumb mode. Both support swipe-style typing, but available sources do not establish that either is faster or more accurate.
Choose the layout that matches how you type
“Thumb typing” can mean two different things. If you hold your phone in one hand and type with that thumb, a narrower keyboard positioned on the left or right reduces how far you need to reach. If you hold a wide device with both hands, a split keyboard separates the keys into two groups so each thumb can work on its side.
- One hand: look for a compact, side-positioned layout.
- Two thumbs on a wide screen: look for a split layout, particularly if you use a tablet or landscape orientation.
- Either style: consider whether you prefer tapping or gliding across letters, and check that the keyboard supports your languages and layouts.
How the documented options compare
| Keyboard | One-handed layout | Split-thumb layout | Swipe input | Other documented features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gboard | Google Play describes a one-handed mode that pins the keyboard to the left or right on large-screen phones. | Not documented in the reviewed official sources. | Glide typing is documented by Google. | Google Play lists voice typing, handwriting, themes, and cursor and delete gestures. |
| Microsoft SwiftKey | Microsoft documents a compact One-handed mode that can be positioned at either side. | Microsoft documents Thumb mode, which splits the keyboard in half. | Microsoft documents Flow, which lets users glide across letters. | Microsoft documents floating and tablet modes, resizing and repositioning, and multilingual typing. |
These are documented features, not a controlled comparison of comfort, typing speed, or accuracy. The best fit depends on your device, hands, languages, and preferences.

Gboard: a straightforward choice for one-handed glide typing
Google’s Gboard help explains that you can slide a finger from letter to letter to spell words. Google Play also describes a one-handed mode that pins the keyboard to the left or right on large-screen phones. That combination makes Gboard a reasonable first option if you want to reach keys with one thumb and use swipe-style input.

Gboard’s listing also names voice typing, handwriting, themes, emoji and GIF features, and gestures for moving the cursor or deleting text. Those extras may matter if you use them, but they do not demonstrate that Gboard is more comfortable or accurate for thumb typing.
Google notes that glide-typing instructions can differ on manufacturer-customized versions of Android, and some instructions apply only to Android 8.0 and up. If the documented steps do not match your device, check your keyboard’s settings and the manufacturer’s guidance. Google’s Gboard glide-typing help covers the feature.

SwiftKey: the clearest documented split option
Microsoft SwiftKey documents five Android modes: Full, One-handed, Float, Thumb/split, and Tablet. One-handed mode reduces the keyboard’s width and can be positioned on either side. Thumb mode divides the keyboard in half; Microsoft says it may be useful on larger devices such as tablets or in landscape orientation. Read Microsoft’s instructions for changing SwiftKey’s keyboard mode for the available modes.
SwiftKey’s Flow feature supports gliding over letters, and Microsoft says the gesture can continue through the spacebar into another word without lifting your finger. The current Google Play listing advertises swipe and tap input, adjustable size and layout, themes, and support for over 700 languages, with up to five enabled simultaneously. These language figures and feature descriptions are claims on the app’s listing, not an independent assessment of how well each language works for you. Set up a layout and judge it on your own device
- Decide your grip and orientation. For one-handed portrait use, try a side-positioned compact mode. For two-thumb use on a wide screen or in landscape, try SwiftKey’s Thumb/split mode.
- Enable the layout in the keyboard app. For SwiftKey, use Microsoft’s keyboard-mode instructions to choose One-handed or Thumb/split. For Gboard, look for its one-handed mode in the keyboard options; Google Play describes the keyboard as pinning to either side.
- Try ordinary typing, not just a short sample. Type the kinds of messages you actually send, including punctuation and words in your usual languages. Notice whether your thumbs reach the keys comfortably and whether the keyboard’s size and position suit your grip.
- Compare tapping with glide input if you want it. Gboard calls its feature Glide typing; SwiftKey calls its gesture input Flow. Keep the method that feels dependable to you rather than assuming a universal speed advantage.
- Check language and layout support in the app. Confirm the specific language, alphabet, and keyboard layout you need. A headline language count does not establish that every regional layout or typing behavior is available.
Privacy and other keyboard options
A keyboard processes text as you enter it, so privacy deserves a specific check. Google Play’s data-safety information for Gboard and SwiftKey is supplied by each developer; the listings caution that data practices may vary by use, region, and age. These summaries are disclosures, not a complete independent audit of every kind of processing. Review the current listing and the app’s own privacy information before deciding what to install or enable. The Gboard listing and SwiftKey listing provide the respective store disclosures.
If offline operation or open-source software is a priority, Android Authority’s roundup describes HeliBoard as an offline, open-source option with gesture typing and customization. That is a secondary-source description, not verification of a thumb-friendly layout or a guarantee about every privacy detail. Check the project’s own documentation for current behavior before choosing it. The same roundup discusses Samsung Keyboard’s Galaxy and One UI integration, but device integration alone does not establish a thumb-typing advantage. Android Authority’s keyboard-alternatives roundup provides that discovery context.
