The key icon in Android’s status bar is the VPN indicator. It normally means a VPN tunnel is connected, even if you closed the VPN app. Find the active VPN in Settings, disconnect it there or in the responsible app, then check Always-on VPN, Block connections without VPN, work-profile policies, and device management if the icon returns.
What the Android key icon means
Android uses a small key-shaped status-bar icon to show that a VPN connection is active. The icon is not a battery, password, or security-key warning. It is Android’s system-level indication that network traffic is currently being routed through a virtual private network.
A VPN can be supplied by a standalone VPN app, a manually saved VPN profile in Android Settings, a work profile, or an organization’s device-management policy. Closing an app does not necessarily disconnect its VPN service, and turning off a tunnel may not stop Android from reconnecting it if Always-on VPN is enabled.

Samsung Galaxy phones also show a connected-VPN indicator, although the exact icon can vary by model and software version. Samsung’s Knox framework has additional AlwaysOn and KeepOn behaviors for managed configurations; those behaviors should not be assumed for every Galaxy phone or every VPN app.

First identify which VPN is active
- Open Settings.
- Use the Settings search box and search for VPN.
- Open Network & internet > VPN on Google’s Android interface. A manufacturer may use slightly different wording or place the menu under a connections category.
- Review every listed VPN, including profiles you no longer remember installing. Android’s VPN page can show saved profiles and accepted VPN apps.
- Note whether the connection is an app-managed VPN, a manually configured profile, a work-profile VPN, or a control imposed by an administrator.
If selecting a listed VPN opens another application, that app owns the connection controls. Use its Disconnect or Stop control rather than repeatedly closing the app from the recent-apps screen.
If the VPN page does not make the source obvious
Do not assume that an unfamiliar name is harmless or that a familiar app is the active connection. Open each entry and read its status. A saved profile may be present without currently carrying traffic, while an accepted VPN app may start a tunnel from its own interface.
Check the notification shade as well as the status bar. Android may show the name of the VPN app or a connection-failure alert. A work profile can have a VPN that mainly serves work-profile apps, so personal apps may look normal even while the key remains visible.

Do not uninstall one merely to test the icon if it protects a work profile or is required by an administrator; first identify its settings and owner.
Disconnect the VPN without deleting it
Disconnecting is the correct choice when you only want the key icon gone temporarily and may use the VPN again.
- In Settings > Network & internet > VPN, tap the gear or settings button beside the active VPN.
- Choose Turn off or Disconnect, depending on the Android version and VPN implementation.
- If Android opens the VPN app, disconnect from the app’s own connection screen.
- Wait briefly, then check the status bar and the VPN page again.
Disconnecting stops the current tunnel but leaves the app, credentials, and saved profile available for a later connection. If the key disappears and does not return, no further change is needed.
Forget an old or unwanted VPN profile
Use Forget only when you no longer need the saved VPN configuration. Forgetting removes the saved network or profile; it is not simply another name for temporarily disconnecting.

- Open the VPN entry’s gear icon in Android Settings.
- Tap Forget and confirm.
- If the VPN came from an app, uninstalling or disabling the app may be necessary to remove its app-level configuration. Follow that app’s own removal instructions.
Do not forget a work or school VPN merely to clear an icon. A managed profile may be required for access to internal systems, and an administrator may automatically reinstall or reconnect it.
Stop Android from reconnecting the VPN
Turn off Always-on VPN
Always-on VPN tells Android to keep a VPN service connected or to reconnect it after a failure, restart, or network change. If the key icon vanishes and then returns, Always-on is one of the first settings to inspect.
- Open Settings and search for VPN.
- Open the VPN entry’s settings.
- Turn off Always-on VPN, then disconnect the current connection.
- Return to the VPN list and confirm that the service is no longer active.
Google notes that an Always-on connection that stops working produces a persistent notification that remains until the connection is restored. That notification is different from the key icon: the key represents the VPN status, while the persistent alert reports that an Always-on connection is not working.
Some app-configured VPNs do not expose an Always-on switch in Android’s standard VPN screen. In that case, open the named VPN app and look for settings such as Always-on, auto-connect, connect on startup, or trusted-network behavior.

Check “Block connections without VPN”
Android may label the lockdown setting Block connections without VPN. When enabled, Android blocks network traffic that does not use the VPN. This prevents apps from silently bypassing a failed tunnel, but it can make the phone appear offline whenever the VPN cannot connect.
- Keep it enabled when preventing traffic outside the VPN is more important than maintaining ordinary connectivity during an outage.
- Turn it off when you need the phone to use normal internet access while the VPN is unavailable and accept the loss of no-bypass protection.
Open the VPN’s settings to inspect this control. If it is locked, greyed out, or immediately restored, a work or school administrator may have applied the policy. Ask that administrator before changing it.
Choose the right fix for your situation

When the key icon remains after you disconnect
Another VPN app is connected
Android can have more than one VPN-capable app installed, although only one VPN connection normally controls system traffic at a time. Inspect the full VPN list and open any unfamiliar entry. Also check recently installed security, parental-control, firewall, antivirus, or privacy apps: some use Android’s VPN framework to filter traffic without looking like a traditional consumer VPN.

The VPN is limited to a work profile
Organizations can configure a VPN for work-profile apps only. Personal apps may appear unaffected while the VPN indicator remains present because the work profile is still connected. Open the VPN page from the main Settings app and inspect work-profile settings separately. If Android does not let you disconnect it, contact the organization’s IT administrator.
Always-on or lockdown is still enabled
Turning off the current tunnel does not necessarily disable the policy that starts it again. Reopen the VPN entry and verify both Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN. For app-managed VPNs, make the equivalent changes inside the app.
A managed device is enforcing the setting
Device-management software can configure Always-on and lockdown and can prevent the user from editing them. This is common on company-owned phones and phones with a managed work profile. A reset, app uninstall, or repeated disconnect attempt is not a reliable solution to an administrator policy; request the approved change from IT.
The icon is being misidentified
Samsung says Galaxy indicator icons vary by model and software version. Confirm the symbol by opening the notification shade and checking the VPN entry or by searching Settings for VPN. Do not treat every key-like symbol on every Android skin as proof of the same connection state.
Samsung Galaxy and Knox-specific behavior
On Galaxy devices, Samsung documents a VPN-service-connected indicator, but the visual design can differ between models and software releases. Samsung Knox documentation also distinguishes AlwaysOn from KeepOn in managed VPN deployments.

That is a managed-framework edge case, not a rule for all Galaxy phones. If the phone belongs to an employer or school, ask the administrator which Knox policy is active before changing security settings.
Persistent notification versus status-bar key
These symptoms point to different checks:
- Key icon: Android is indicating an active VPN state. Find the connection in Settings or its controlling app.
- Persistent Always-on notification: Android is reporting that an Always-on VPN stopped working. Reconnect it or disable Always-on if the policy allows.
- No internet access: Check whether Block connections without VPN is enabled. Lockdown can intentionally block all traffic while the tunnel is down.
Clearing a notification does not necessarily disconnect the VPN, and disconnecting a VPN does not necessarily remove a policy that will reconnect it.

Android version and device limitations
Google’s documented VPN flow includes steps that require Android 14 or later. Earlier versions may use different labels or expose fewer controls, so follow the closest equivalent shown on your phone rather than expecting an identical screen.
Google also notes that a VPN may be configured through a Play Store app or by an administrator. Pixel 7 and later phones and Pixel Tablet have an optimized built-in VPN by Google in countries where that service is available; availability is geographic, so do not assume the feature exists on every device or in every country.

A complete diagnostic sequence
- Confirm the symptom. Check whether you are seeing the status-bar key, an Always-on failure notification, blocked internet access, or a combination.
- Open the VPN list. Use Settings search, then open the VPN page.
- Inspect every entry. Identify the active profile, app, work profile, or administrator policy.
- Disconnect the current tunnel. Use the gear beside the entry or the controlling app’s Disconnect command.
- Disable automatic reconnection. Turn off Always-on or the app’s auto-connect option if you do not want the service to restart.
- Decide on lockdown. Leave Block connections without VPN on for no-bypass protection, or turn it off when ordinary connectivity during VPN outages is required.
- Forget only obsolete profiles. Remove a saved configuration only when you no longer need it.
- Check work-profile and administrator controls. Stop trying to override a setting that the organization owns; request the change through IT.
- Verify the result. Reopen the VPN page, check the status bar, and inspect the notification shade. A restart can be a later diagnostic step, but it does not replace correcting the VPN configuration.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Only force-closing the VPN app: the background VPN service may remain connected.
- Forgetting a profile immediately: this can remove a configuration you still need and does not necessarily stop an app from recreating it.
- Disabling lockdown without understanding the trade-off: internet access may return, but traffic can leave the phone outside the VPN.
- Changing a company policy on a managed phone: the setting may be required for compliance and may be restored automatically.
- Assuming a reboot is the fix: restarting may change the visible state temporarily while Always-on or management continues to reconnect the VPN.
When to leave the VPN connected
The key icon is not an error by itself. Leave the VPN connected when you intentionally use it for a work profile, private network, or security policy. The correct response to an unexpected icon is to identify the service and decide whether its connection, automatic reconnection, and lockdown behavior match your needs.
If the connection belongs to an employer, school, or other administrator, the safest resolution is to follow that organization’s policy. If it belongs to an app you recognize, adjust the app’s connection and auto-connect settings. If it is an obsolete saved profile, disconnect it first and forget it only after confirming that it is no longer required.

How do I find which VPN is running?
Open Settings, search for VPN, and open Network & internet > VPN on Google’s interface. Review every entry and tap one to see whether Android hands control to a VPN app.
Why does the key icon come back after I disconnect?
Always-on VPN, an app’s auto-connect setting, a work-profile policy, or administrator management may be reconnecting the tunnel. Check those controls before forgetting a profile.
What is the difference between Disconnect and Forget?

Why is my phone offline when the VPN fails?
