Android’s Heads Up walking-safety feature is expected to stop working sometime in 2027. Google has not disclosed a month or day. The timing comes from a banner exposed in Digital Wellbeing beta 1.49.99, so it represents a planned deprecation rather than a completed shutdown or a formally announced end-of-service date.
What is happening to Heads Up?
Heads Up is an opt-in feature in Android’s Digital Wellbeing tools. Introduced in 2021, it reminds people to pay attention when they are walking while looking at an unlocked phone. A banner activated in Digital Wellbeing beta version 1.49.99 says, “Heads Up will stop working in 2027.” The message points users toward other Digital Wellbeing tools intended to help them stay present and maintain a healthy balance with their phones.
The banner does not specify whether the change will arrive early or late in 2027, and it does not identify a particular Android release or device group that will be affected first.
What the evidence says about the timeline
| Evidence | What it shows | How certain it is |
|---|---|---|
| Digital Wellbeing beta 1.49.99 banner | “Heads Up will stop working in 2027.” | Strong indication of Google’s current plan, but no exact date |
| Digital Wellbeing v1.48.975819457.beta strings, reported September 24, 2026 | “⚠️ Walking detection is going away soon” and “Be careful while walking.” | Earlier warning that preceded the year-specific message |
| Formal Google announcement | No public rationale or shutdown schedule was identified in the reports | Not available; beta evidence can change before release |
Android Authority reported the year-specific banner on October 15, 2026, after an earlier APK teardown had found the deprecation wording in September. Because both pieces of evidence come from work-in-progress Digital Wellbeing software, Google could alter the timing, wording or rollout. The safest description is that Heads Up is scheduled or expected to be retired in 2027, not that a final shutdown date has been guaranteed.
How Heads Up worked
Heads Up monitored for signs that the phone owner was walking while the display was unlocked, then displayed a reminder to look up and stay aware of the surroundings. The feature relied primarily on the phone’s motion sensors. Users could optionally grant location access, allowing the app to distinguish indoor pacing from being out on the street.
Google first made it available on Pixel 2 and newer Pixel phones before expanding it to additional Android devices. It was designed as a safety prompt, not as a navigation system, emergency detector or guarantee that a pedestrian would notice hazards. Alerts could only help when the phone was able to infer walking and the user saw or heard the reminder.
Is Google replacing it?
No official replacement has been identified in the reported notices. The current banner directs people to explore other Digital Wellbeing features, but it does not name another tool that detects walking and issues the same type of alert.

That distinction matters: screen-time controls, focus tools and other Digital Wellbeing functions may help reduce phone use, yet they are not confirmed substitutes for motion-triggered walking reminders. Until Google publishes more detail, users should not assume that a particular existing setting will inherit Heads Up’s detection, alert timing, device coverage or privacy behavior.
Why might the feature be going away?
Google has not published a reason for the retirement in the notices described by Android Authority. The earlier beta strings offered no explanation, and the newer banner supplies only a broad invitation to use other Digital Wellbeing tools. Any claim that the decision is driven by battery consumption, low adoption, sensor accuracy, privacy concerns or a replacement project would therefore be speculation.
What Android users should do now
Check whether Heads Up is enabled
- Open Settings.
- Choose Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
- Look for Heads Up or the walking-awareness option within the available Digital Wellbeing tools.
- Review its notification and permission settings if you still want the reminders.
Menu names can vary by Android version, manufacturer and device model. If Heads Up is absent, the feature may not be supported on that phone or may already be changing through a Digital Wellbeing update.

Plan for the loss of the alert
- Do not rely on Heads Up as your only walking-safety measure; keep your attention on traffic, obstacles and other people.
- If you use location access for the feature, review that permission separately in Android’s app-permission controls.
- Watch Digital Wellbeing updates and Google’s Android announcements for a confirmed end date or a named successor.
- Evaluate any proposed alternative by checking whether it detects walking, works while the screen is unlocked, requires location, affects battery life and supports your device.
What is still unknown
- The exact day Heads Up will stop functioning in 2027.
- Whether the shutdown will happen through a Digital Wellbeing app update, an Android system update or a server-side change.
- Which Android versions and manufacturers will lose access first.
- Whether Google will introduce a feature with equivalent motion-based detection.
- How existing permissions, notification settings and stored preferences will be handled after deprecation.
For now, Heads Up remains an available Android safety feature where the installed Digital Wellbeing version supports it. The 2027 statement is an advance warning from beta software, so users should treat it as a likely change and wait for Google to provide the final schedule and any replacement details.
