On supported Android phones running Android 12 or later, a green status-bar indicator means an app or service is using—or has recently used—your camera or microphone. Swipe down and tap the indicator to see the source, then check its permissions if the access seems unexpected. The indicator shows sensor access; it does not prove that an app is spying on you.
What the green dot means
Android displays an indicator when an app accesses the camera or microphone. Google’s Android Help says, “When apps use your camera or mic, a green indicator will show in the top right corner of your screen.” The precise appearance and location can vary by phone maker and device, so look for the privacy indicator if your screen differs.
The indicator tells you that sensor access occurred, not what the app did with the audio or images, whether anything was saved, or why access happened. An app’s purpose and what you were doing at the time help determine whether the activity makes sense.
Identify the app or service using the sensor
- When the indicator appears, swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings or notifications.
- Tap the camera or microphone indicator to see which app or service is using, or recently used, the sensor.
- Tap the indicator again to open the relevant controls and review or manage permissions. Labels and screens may differ across Android devices.
These steps follow Google’s Android Help instructions for checking camera or microphone activity. If the indicator is no longer visible or the steps look different on your phone, use the device’s Privacy or Permission settings.

Why the indicator may remain after you stop using an app
A green indicator does not always mean the camera or microphone is active at that exact moment. Android’s platform documentation treats access as recent for a 15-second window after use ends. During that window, active and recent access can overlap in the display. If multiple apps accessed the same sensor within the recent interval, the indicator dialog may show only one recent source—not a complete history of every app.

Review sensor access in the Privacy Dashboard
The Privacy Dashboard provides a timeline of when apps used sensitive permissions, including camera and microphone access. Google documents a 24-hour history on Android 12 and a seven-day history on Android 13. Those windows are version-specific; check your phone’s dashboard for the history available on your build.
Open Settings and look for Privacy, then Privacy Dashboard. The exact path and labels can vary by manufacturer. Select Camera or Microphone to review the recorded activity and the apps associated with it. Google’s Privacy Dashboard instructions describe the Android 12 and Android 13 history periods.

Restrict access or turn off a sensor
Change an app’s permission
If an app’s access does not fit what you were doing, open its permissions from the indicator or find the app under Settings’ Privacy, Permission Manager, or Apps controls. Set Camera or Microphone access to a more restrictive option, such as “Don’t allow,” if available. The exact wording varies. An app that needs the sensor for a feature may not work normally without permission.
Disable camera or microphone access system-wide
Supported Android 12-or-later devices also provide device-wide camera and microphone controls, commonly in Quick Settings or Privacy settings. Turning a sensor off can prevent apps from using it until access is restored, and may interrupt features that depend on it. Availability and labels vary by phone. How to judge an unexpected indicator
- Check whether the app’s normal function explains the access—for example, whether you were taking a photo or recording audio.
- Use the indicator to identify the source, then consult the Privacy Dashboard for a broader timeline.
- If the access is unnecessary or unexplained, restrict the app’s camera or microphone permission, or use the device-wide toggle.
- Remember that the indicator reports access, not intent. It is a useful prompt to investigate, but not proof of spying or malicious behavior.
Android’s indicator and controls are documented for supported Android 12-and-later devices, but manufacturers can vary the presentation and settings paths. For device-specific labels and availability, consult Android’s privacy settings and permissions overview.
