If your Android location is missing, inaccurate, or jumping around, check system Location, the affected app’s permission, and your reception before assuming the GPS hardware has failed. Android may estimate location using GPS alongside Wi-Fi, cellular signals, and sensors, so the right fix depends on whether the problem is missing coordinates, a wide uncertainty circle, or incorrect direction.

First, identify what “GPS not working” means

Android location is not necessarily a GPS-only reading. On devices with Google Play services, Location Accuracy can combine GPS, nearby Wi-Fi access points, cellular signals, and sensor data when available. This can help indoors or near buildings, where satellite signals may be blocked or weakened. A slow or inaccurate reading alone does not prove the phone’s GPS hardware has failed. Google explains how Location Accuracy works.

  • No location or an old location: Check device Location and the app’s permission first.
  • A blue dot with a large circle: Maps is uncertain about the position; reception or available location signals may be poor.
  • The dot is roughly right but the beam points the wrong way: Check compass orientation and calibration.
  • The problem occurs only in one app: Focus on that app’s permission and settings before troubleshooting the entire phone.

Some devices, including some Wi-Fi-only tablets, do not have GPS. The available location signals and sensors also vary by device. Google’s Android guidance describes the combined service, while Google Maps Help explains the accuracy indicators and troubleshooting cues.

Work through these Android location checks

1. Turn on the phone’s Location setting

Open Settings → Location and make sure Location is on. This is the device-wide setting: if it is off, apps cannot get the phone’s location through normal location access. Menu labels can differ by Android version and manufacturer; search Settings for “Location” if you do not see that path.

  • Android supported (app required)
  • Built-In Roof Mount Magnet

2. Confirm the affected app’s location permission

In Settings, open the affected app’s permissions and allow location access. Android 12 and later distinguish approximate from precise access. An app can have location permission while being limited to approximate location, so check that the permission level matches what you need. This is separate from device-wide Location Accuracy. Google’s Android instructions cover Location Accuracy, and Google Maps Help covers app location troubleshooting. The exact permission menu varies by phone.

3. Check Location Accuracy

Location Accuracy helps Android combine available signals rather than relying only on GPS. Google documents these paths:

4. Check Airplane mode and connectivity

If Maps says accuracy is affected, turn off Airplane mode and enable Wi-Fi or mobile data as appropriate. Wi-Fi and cellular signals may assist a location estimate even when the phone is not connected to those networks for internet access, depending on device settings and service availability. Google Maps Help includes these checks for location accuracy.

5. Test outdoors with a clearer view of the sky

Move away from indoor, underground, or obstructed areas and check the location again outdoors. Tall buildings and multi-storey car parks can block or weaken satellite signals. In Google Maps, a wide circle around the blue dot indicates greater uncertainty; it is not by itself evidence of a damaged receiver. Google’s Maps guidance describes the circle and reception-related checks.

6. Temporarily turn off Battery Saver

As a diagnostic check, disable Battery Saver and see whether the location stops jumping around. Google lists this as a troubleshooting step for a drifting or unstable Maps location; it is not a universal explanation for GPS problems. Google Maps Help provides the check.

7. Calibrate the compass when direction is wrong

If the blue-dot beam is wide or points the wrong way, move the phone in a figure eight a few times until the beam narrows and points in the right direction. If Maps displays an on-screen calibration prompt, follow it. Compass calibration addresses orientation; it does not repair weak GPS reception or establish that the coordinates are wrong. Google’s Maps instructions describe the figure-eight motion.

8. Restart the phone

If the location remains wrong after the relevant checks, restart the phone and test again. Google’s Maps guidance says, “If your location is still wrong, you can restart your Android phone or tablet.” Google Maps Help: Find and improve your location’s accuracy in Google Maps – Android.

What location accuracy figures do—and do not—mean

Google Maps Help describes satellite-based location at an approximate scale of around 20 metres and mobile-tower location at a scale of a few thousand metres. These are broad descriptions, not guarantees for every phone, setting, or environment; Maps does not promise that a particular device will reach either figure. Google’s explanation contrasts the approximate scales.

When to seek device-specific help

If location fails across multiple apps even outdoors, after checking permissions, Location Accuracy, connectivity, and restarting, contact the handset maker or a qualified repair provider for model-specific diagnosis. Those symptoms warrant further investigation but do not establish a failed antenna or receiver on their own. Some Wi-Fi-only tablets also lack GPS, so check your device’s specifications if it never provides satellite location.
