For place-based Android features that can tolerate a delay of a few minutes, use the Geofencing API instead of continuously polling for high-accuracy location. Geofences are designed to conserve power, but they are proximity signals—not instant, door-level arrival detectors. Reliability comes from choosing a realistic radius and delay, handling transitions and recovery, and requesting background access only when the feature truly needs it.

When geofencing is the right architecture

Use geofencing for long-running, area-based background behavior such as notifying someone after they reach or spend time near a place. Android describes the Geofencing API as optimized for battery performance and an excellent fit for long-running location notifications. It uses the Fused Location Provider to monitor defined areas rather than requiring an app to continuously request location updates. Android’s geofencing guide

Background location gathering is throttled on Android 8.0 (API 26) and later: location may be computed and delivered only a few times per hour. Android says background geofence responsiveness shifts from tens of seconds to approximately two minutes; this trade-off can improve battery performance by up to 10 times on some devices. That is Android’s platform-published upper-bound comparison, not a promise for a particular app or phone. Android’s background location limits

If the feature needs immediate turn-by-turn guidance or precise live tracking, use a visible foreground experience while that task is active. Do not keep high-accuracy background updates running just to learn whether the device reached a place. Android recommends balanced-power or low-power location for most use cases and reserving high accuracy for foreground tasks that require real-time updates. Android’s battery guidance for location

Choose boundaries and delays that match real-world accuracy

Start with a radius of at least 100–150 meters, Android’s recommended minimum range, then adjust based on the environment and validate on supported devices. A geofence that is much smaller than the location signal can produce unreliable results. Android says Wi-Fi location accuracy is usually 20–50 meters; without Wi-Fi, accuracy can range from several hundred meters to several kilometers. These are platform guidance values, not guaranteed measurements for every phone or site. Android’s geofencing guide

Consequently, a small circle around a building entrance cannot support a door-level arrival promise by itself. Set a boundary large enough for the location conditions in which the feature will be used, and describe the outcome as arrival near an area rather than exact arrival at a point.

Set a realistic notification responsiveness

For background place notifications, begin with a notification responsiveness setting around five minutes; use around ten minutes if the task can tolerate a longer wait. Responsiveness is not an exact delivery deadline. Android says geofence latency is usually under two minutes and can be shorter while moving, but background latency averages about two to three minutes and may reach six minutes after the device has been stationary for a significant period. Choose transitions to reduce noise

  • Enter: Use when reaching the area is meaningful, but expect a pass-through to count as an entry.
  • Exit: Use when leaving the area matters.
  • Dwell: Use when the person must stay in the area before the app acts. Set a loitering delay that reflects the task; Android’s real-world scenarios guide suggests about five minutes or less as a starting point. Android’s real-world geofencing scenarios

For a reminder that matters only after someone has stayed at a location, a dwell transition avoids treating every brief drive-by as a meaningful visit. Pair a dwell delay with a responsiveness setting the user can accept; neither setting guarantees an exact firing time.

Register geofences and process transitions safely

Register the desired fences with the Geofencing API and supply a PendingIntent. A broadcast receiver can inspect the incoming geofencing event and then trigger the app’s next action, such as scheduling background work or showing a notification. Keep receiver work short and hand off longer tasks to an appropriate background-work mechanism. Starting with Android S, PendingIntent mutability requirements apply, so verify the API contract and target-SDK behavior for the versions your app supports. Android’s geofencing guide

Android allows at most 100 registered geofences at a time. If the app has more possible places than that, avoid registering the entire catalog at once. A staged design can use a larger-area fence to detect entry into a region, then register smaller fences for relevant nearby places. Remove fences that are no longer needed. If finer location updates are useful while the user is inside an area, start them only then and stop them on exit. Android’s geofencing guide

Plan for registration recovery

Geofence registrations are normally restored after Google Play services upgrades, service-process restarts, or a location-process crash. The app must re-register fences that remain necessary after a device reboot, app reinstall, app-data clear, Google Play services-data clear, or a GEOFENCE_NOT_AVAILABLE alert. • Persist enough app state to reconstruct the intended active fence set.
  • Make registration idempotent, so retrying recovery does not create stale or duplicate registrations.
  • On recovery, rebuild only the fences the feature currently needs and remove obsolete ones.

Request background access only when the feature needs it

Ask for the least location access that can support the feature. If it genuinely requires all-the-time access, explain the user benefit clearly and tie the request to core functionality. Apps targeting Android 10 (API 29) or later need ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION for all-the-time access. Google Play also restricts and reviews background-location use; meeting Android’s general recommendations does not guarantee store approval. Android’s location-permission guidance

Validate the design against the user’s tolerance

Decision Prefer geofencing when… Choose another approach when…
Latency A delay of a few minutes is acceptable for a background place trigger. The feature requires immediate turn-by-turn behavior or live updates; use a visible foreground experience for that task.
Battery The app needs to know whether the device reached a defined area, rather than track continuous movement. Continuous high-accuracy location is truly essential; constrain it to the task and duration that need it.
Spatial precision The target area can accommodate a radius of at least 100–150 meters and variable location accuracy. The feature depends on precise detection at a small boundary without separate verification.
Alert noise Entry, exit, or time spent in an area is a useful signal; dwell can suppress brief pass-through alerts. A geofence transition alone cannot distinguish the exact behavior the feature needs.
Number of places The active set fits within the 100-geofence limit or can be registered dynamically. The design assumes more than 100 simultaneous registrations without a staged strategy.
Permission Background access is essential, understandable to users, and compliant with OS and store requirements. The feature can work with foreground-only access or does not justify all-the-time location.

Before release, validate the chosen radius, responsiveness, dwell delay, and recovery behavior on the Android versions and in the real environments the feature supports. Geofence delivery depends on available location inputs and device conditions: a small fence may be unreliable when network location is inaccurate, Wi-Fi is off, or data connectivity is poor.
