On Android, “deleted” can mean a file is in an app’s recoverable Trash, a local copy was removed while a cloud backup remains, or the item was permanently deleted from a particular app. There is no single Android-wide Trash or retention period. Start by checking which app handled the file and where it was stored.
What’s the difference between deleted and permanently deleted on Android?
Deleted may mean an item was moved to an app-specific Trash or Recently Deleted folder, where it can still be restored for a limited time. Permanently deleted means it is no longer available through that app’s documented Trash restore process. A separate copy may still exist elsewhere, such as in a cloud library or backup, but that depends on where the item was stored and whether backup had completed.
Android does not provide one shared Trash for every file manager, photo app, and cloud service. Google notes that Files app availability and steps can vary by device; a phone manufacturer may provide a different file-management app. Check the app that managed the item rather than assuming all deleted files go to the same place. Google’s Android file-management guidance explains that device-specific variation.

Files by Google
Open Files by Google and check its Trash. Items there can be restored while they remain in Trash. Google says Files by Google automatically deletes Trash contents after 30 days; deleting an item from Trash is described as permanent. Some cleanup actions, including cleaning “Junk files,” permanently delete files rather than moving them to Trash. The Trash feature’s availability can vary by Android version and rollout, so these steps may not apply to every phone or file manager. Google Files Help: Restore deleted files and Google Files Help: Trash availability describe the workflow.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Google Photos and your phone’s Gallery
Check Google Photos’ Trash and the device’s Gallery or Photos app’s Recently Deleted area separately. They are distinct locations, and the steps depend on the app and phone. Google’s documented Photos workflow says items absent from its Trash cannot be restored from that Trash; this does not establish what every device or third-party recovery method can do. Google Photos Help: Restore deleted photos and videos.
Also check the Google account and backup status. If you used Google Photos’ “Free up space” feature, it removes device copies of photos and videos that are safely backed up; backed-up copies remain viewable in Google Photos when you are signed in and online. That differs from deleting an item within Google Photos, which can affect the library and devices with backup enabled. Do not assume a cloud copy exists until you confirm the correct account and that backup completed. Google Photos Help: Free up space on your device and Android Help: Back up or restore data.

- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Google Drive
For a Drive document, check Drive’s own Trash; a local file manager’s Trash is not the same location. Google says Drive files in Trash are permanently deleted after 30 days or when Trash is emptied. Once permanently deleted, the owner and people the owner shared the file with lose access. Google Drive Help: Delete and restore files in Google Drive.

If “permanently deleted” means the item was removed from the relevant app’s Trash or the Trash retention period ended, that app’s documented restore route is no longer available. First check for another copy: the same photo may be in Google Photos, a document may be in Drive, or a separate backup may contain the item. Confirm the relevant account and backup status rather than relying on the word “deleted” alone.

How to check before giving up on a file
- Identify the app and location. Was it managed by Files by Google, a manufacturer’s file manager or Gallery, Google Photos, or Drive? Also distinguish a local device copy from a cloud-backed copy.
- Check that app’s Trash or Recently Deleted area. If the item is still there, use the app’s restore option. Menu names and steps can vary by app and device.
- For photos and videos, check both the app Trash and backup. In Google Photos, confirm the signed-in account and whether backup completed; check the phone’s Gallery Trash separately.
- For Drive files, check Drive Trash. A cloud document may not be in the phone’s Downloads folder or local file-manager Trash.
- Look for another copy if the app’s restore route is unavailable. Check other accounts, devices, or backups you already use. Do not treat an unverified backup as proof that the file is safe.
How to avoid losing files next time
- Verify backup before removing local copies. In Google Photos, confirm the item is backed up and the correct account is active before using “Free up space.”
- Keep a separate copy of important files. Google documents transferring files between an Android device and a computer over USB. Follow the phone’s transfer prompts and verify the copy on the computer before deleting the original. Android Help: Transfer files between your computer and Android device.
- Do not assume accessories work with every phone. A USB-C flash drive is only an option if the phone’s connector and external-storage support are compatible; Google’s USB transfer instructions cover a computer, not universal flash-drive support.
