If your day depends on keeping two apps visible, using a phone as a light desktop, installing software from outside one store, or moving folders in bulk, returning to an iPhone can feel like a downgrade. The contrast is about workflow rather than a universal Android-versus-iPhone winner. The four Android capabilities that most often create that feeling are split-screen and floating-window multitasking, desktop-style use such as Samsung DeX, broader app-distribution options, and more direct file operations.
The practical question is not simply “What Android features do you miss when using an iPhone?” It is which tasks you perform often enough that an extra tap, a missing window mode, or a restricted installation path becomes friction.
What the comparison actually measures
A 2026 Android Authority page poll with 1,047 votes gives a useful snapshot of what its readers said they missed, but it is publisher-page feedback, not a representative population survey. The percentages total 99% because of rounding.

| Reverse wireless charging | 8% |
That distribution explains why this article concentrates on software workflows. Reverse wireless charging is a real convenience on some Android phones, but the four capabilities below affect how you work, communicate, and organize data throughout the day. Exact behavior depends on the manufacturer, model, Android version, carrier, and region.

1. Split-screen and floating windows keep two tasks in view
What Android lets you do
Android’s most visible advantage for a multitasking-heavy workflow is the ability to keep two apps on screen at once. In split-screen, one app occupies the upper or left portion while another remains active below or on the right. You can research in a browser while taking notes, check a document while writing, or follow a reference image while editing another app without repeatedly opening the app switcher.
Many manufacturers add a pop-up or floating-window mode. A messaging app can sit above the current app as a movable, resizable window; the Android Authority author’s example is replying to WhatsApp without abandoning the document or page underneath. On Galaxy phones, frequently used combinations can be saved as app pairs on the home screen or in the Edge Panel, reducing the setup to one tap.
App bubbles provide another layer. Android’s official feature description for Android 17 says Bubbles can extend beyond chat-style notifications, letting users open and switch among more than two apps. The same description introduces a bubble bar interface for foldable devices. That does not mean every Android phone running an earlier version has the same controls: manufacturers and software releases determine which modes appear and how they are launched.
What the iPhone comparison means
iPhone is not devoid of multitasking. Apple supports Picture in Picture for FaceTime or video while another app is in use, so a call or video can remain visible as you work. The cited material does not establish a native iPhone split-screen mode for two general-purpose apps, however. That distinction matters if your routine is “browser plus notes” or “email plus spreadsheet,” rather than video playback in a small overlay.
On iPhone, you can still switch quickly between apps, use Slide Over-like system surfaces where Apple provides them, and keep media or a call running in supported modes. Those options do not reproduce the Android pattern of two independently interactive phone apps sharing the display. The loss is most noticeable when you refer to one app continuously while entering information into another.

- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.
- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.
- CAMERA SYSTEM: Advanced 50MP Quad Pixel camera captures sharp, detailed photos and videos in any lighting condition
- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
Who notices the difference most
- Students copying facts into notes or a study app.
- People comparing a document, invoice, or design while composing a response.
- Anyone who handles short messages without losing a long-running task.
- Foldable-phone owners who use a larger inner screen and a bubble bar.
If you rarely need simultaneous app views, the iPhone app switcher and Picture in Picture may be enough. If you perform cross-reference work several times a day, the missing split-screen pattern becomes a recurring time cost rather than a specification-sheet curiosity.
2. Desktop-style phone use turns a compatible Galaxy into a workstation
How Samsung DeX works
Samsung DeX is the clearest Android example of using a phone like a desktop computer. On a compatible Galaxy model, you connect the phone to an external display, typically with an HDMI connection, then add an external keyboard and mouse. DeX presents a desktop-like interface with a taskbar, multiple windows and workspaces, resizable applications, and drag-and-drop interactions.

The value is continuity: the phone supplies the apps and data, while the monitor provides room for several windows. The Android Authority author describes editing a spreadsheet, replying to email, and working with photos or video in this setup. Those are personal use cases, not a claim that every Android phone offers DeX or that every app behaves like a full desktop application.
Why returning to an iPhone can feel restrictive
An iPhone can send video to a monitor or television and can work with keyboards and pointing devices in supported contexts, but the cited comparison does not establish an iPhone equivalent to DeX’s windowed desktop shell. Mirroring a phone screen is different from having a taskbar, overlapping resizable windows, and a workspace designed for a large display.
For a person who occasionally plugs in a phone at a hotel or office, this may not matter. For someone who wants a pocket computer that becomes a temporary workstation, the difference is substantial. A compatible DeX setup also requires the right Galaxy model, a display input or adapter, and peripherals; those accessories add cost and another set of connections to carry.

Check support before buying around this feature
- Identify the exact Galaxy model and its current One UI and Android version.
- Confirm that the model supports DeX; do not infer support from the fact that it is an Android phone or even a Galaxy phone.
- Check whether your monitor accepts the required HDMI or adapter connection.
- Pair or connect the keyboard and mouse you intend to use.
- Test your essential apps in windowed mode, especially office, photo, video, and browser tools.
DeX is therefore a manufacturer-specific strength, not an Android-wide guarantee. If desktop mode is your deciding feature, model-level verification is more important than the operating-system label.

The broader distribution model
Android’s software model can include sources beyond Google Play. The first-person comparison names F-Droid and GitHub repositories as examples of distribution channels and describes installing apps outside the default store. For users who need an open-source utility, a project’s release build, or a tool that is absent from the main storefront, that choice can be the difference between “install” and “not available.”
Alternative distribution is not a promise that every app exists in every channel. Developers choose where to publish, updates may arrive on different schedules, and an app may be limited by country, device, or Android version. A repository can also place more responsibility on you to check the publisher, release notes, permissions, and update mechanism.
Why iPhone users experience this as a downgrade
The iPhone experience is centered on Apple’s approved distribution path, with availability and rules shaped by Apple and by local regulation. A 2026 secondary report describes regional differences in iPhone alternative distribution, but the material available here does not establish a definitive region-by-region legal account. Do not assume that an option available in one country is available in another, or that a policy described for one iOS release remains unchanged.
The fair comparison is therefore “Android can provide more distribution channels in the cited workflow,” not “iPhone can never install software outside one store.” If this issue is decisive, check Apple’s current documentation and the relevant regulator for your country before switching; regional rules can change independently of the hardware.

Use the flexibility without treating it as a safety guarantee
- Prefer the project’s own release page or a well-established repository.
- Verify the publisher and requested permissions before installing.
- Understand how updates and security fixes will reach the app.
- Keep a record of apps installed outside the default store so you can reinstall them after a reset.
- Do not infer that an app is safer, better, or supported merely because it is available outside Google Play.
This is a control-and-choice advantage for some users, especially open-source enthusiasts and technical professionals. It is also an additional maintenance responsibility that many iPhone users intentionally avoid.
4. Android file access can make phone-to-computer work feel more direct
The tasks that feel easier
In the cited author’s workflow, Android makes it easier to move files between a phone and a computer, grant an app access to folders in local storage, perform bulk file operations, and use storage-analysis or synchronization apps. Those are concrete operations: selecting many files at once, working with a known folder hierarchy, and allowing a tool to process a directory rather than handing over items one by one.
This matters for downloaded documents, camera media, project assets, recordings, and files exchanged with a desktop. A person who regularly copies a folder, renames a batch, inspects storage usage, or synchronizes selected directories may notice the difference every day.
Keep the iPhone side accurate
iPhone has file-management features and can move documents through Apple’s Files app, cloud services, sharing tools, and computer connections. The evidence here does not establish that iPhone cannot manage files. It supports a narrower conclusion: the Android workflow described by the author exposes folder-level access and bulk operations more directly for that person’s setup.
App sandboxing, provider integrations, permissions, and the specific computer you use all influence the result. An iPhone may be perfectly adequate if your files live in one cloud service and you rarely perform local batch operations. It can feel constrained if your work depends on a visible, general-purpose local storage tree.

Test your own file routine
- List the folders you use every week, including camera, downloads, documents, and project directories.
- Count how often you copy, rename, delete, or synchronize several files at once.
- Check whether each essential app can open and save to the locations you expect.
- Run one real phone-to-computer transfer, not just a photo share, before changing platforms.
- Confirm how backups and restores will handle local files that are not stored in a cloud service.
Why the downgrade feeling is personal rather than universal
The four features map to different kinds of dependence. Multitasking affects screen layout; desktop mode affects external-display work; alternative distribution affects software choice; file access affects data movement. A photographer, developer, student, office worker, and casual communicator can rank them very differently.
| If your priority is… | Android capability to investigate | iPhone question to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping reference and input apps visible | Split-screen, pop-up windows, app pairs, and bubbles | Is Picture in Picture enough, or do you need two interactive apps? |
| Using a phone with a monitor | Compatible Galaxy model with DeX | Do you need a windowed desktop, or only display mirroring? |
| Installing specialist software | F-Droid, GitHub releases, and other permitted sources | What distribution options exist in your country and on your iOS version? |
| Moving folders and batches | Local storage access and file-operation tools | Can Files, your cloud provider, and your computer handle your real folders? |
Use the table as a decision checklist, not as a scorecard. A feature you never touch should not outweigh battery life, camera performance, accessibility, support, or the apps your household already uses.
Current iPhone context: customization has changed
Older comparisons sometimes describe iPhone as offering no meaningful visual customization. Apple’s June 9, 2025 announcement for iOS 26 says the Home Screen and Lock Screen gain new customization options for app icons and widgets, including a clear look. That makes sweeping claims about an uncustomizable iPhone outdated.
Apple said iOS 26 would be available as a free update for iPhone 11 and later. Apple Intelligence features were limited to specified supported devices, languages, and regions, so check the exact iPhone, software version, language, and country before relying on an intelligence feature. These changes do not create Android-style split-screen, DeX, alternative distribution, or unrestricted folder workflows; they simply keep the comparison fair on personalization and current software support.
What switching transfers—and what it does not solve
Moving data between platforms is separate from reproducing a workflow. Android’s official switch-to-Android guidance says the upgraded transfer flow supports items including app data, call history, a Google Account, files and folders, eSIM, passwords and passkeys, and Wi-Fi networks on select devices running Android 17, with rollout to more devices. eSIM transfer remains carrier-dependent, and the classic transfer methods support different subsets.
A successful transfer can bring your information across without giving an iPhone user the Android interface habits they miss. Before changing phones, write down the exact actions behind your frustration—two apps visible, a monitor workspace, a repository install, or a folder-level batch—and test those actions on the candidate model.
A practical decision rule
Choose an Android phone when at least one of these is a daily requirement and the exact model supports it: interactive split-screen or floating windows, a verified desktop mode, a distribution source your needed app uses, or direct folder-and-batch file operations. Choose an iPhone when those workflows are occasional and you value its app ecosystem, support model, or current personalization more than the extra control.
