If Android is showing a clean status bar with preset icons and no notifications, turn off Show Demo Mode in Developer options. If the phone instead behaves like a store display—restricting accounts or settings, or repeatedly launching a demo—Developer options is not the fix; contact the seller, retailer, or device manager. Android uses “demo mode” for these different situations, and their remedies are not interchangeable.
Identify which kind of demo mode is active

Menu names and locations vary by Android version and manufacturer. Android Developers documents the screenshot-oriented status-bar controls separately from Android’s retail demo setup, which uses device policy and can impose restrictions.
Turn off the screenshot-style System UI demo
- Open Settings and go to Developer options. If the menu is absent, its location and availability depend on your device and software version; Android Developers documents how to locate Developer options on supported devices.
- Find Show Demo Mode and switch it off.
- Check the status bar. Notifications and system-driven status indicators should return if this was the active setting.
Android Developers describes this option as hiding notifications and displaying a preset status bar. Its documentation also describes an Enable Demo Mode control and ADB commands for changing the status bar. The labels and controls are not necessarily identical on every manufacturer’s software.
For a technical ADB exit, AOSP documents adb shell am broadcast -a com.android.systemui.demo -e command exit. The exit action returns the system bars to system-driven state. This is a developer-oriented alternative, not a required step for ordinary Settings use. Android’s developer documentation says the demo ADB commands are verified only on Nexus and Pixel devices, so do not assume they work on every Android phone. Hide the Developer options menu
If your goal is only to remove the advanced settings screen from Settings, switch off its main control. This is separate from turning off the status-bar presentation and does not remove retail device management.
- Open Settings and select Developer options. Android.com describes the general route as Settings > System > Advanced > Developer Options; your device may place or name the menu differently.
- Switch off the main control at the top of the Developer options screen.
- Return to Settings and confirm that the menu is hidden or disabled.
For Galaxy phones, Samsung’s U.S. support guidance is to open Settings > Developer options and tap the switch at the top of the screen. Android.com gives the general shutoff pattern, while Android Developers notes that Developer options locations can differ by device. When the phone is a retail demo or managed device
A store-managed phone can restrict adding accounts, changing settings, connectivity options, and normal device use. Those restrictions come from device policy, not simply from the Developer options menu. Switching off Developer options—or changing the System UI status bar—will not necessarily release a retail configuration.

Avoid trying a destructive reset as a first step: it may erase data and is not a universal way to remove a managed configuration.

AOSP’s published exit instruction is directed to retail employees: “In order to exit retail mode, retail employees must ensure that the demo device isn’t enrolled under device management and factory reset the device from the boot loader.” The AOSP retail demo page was last updated 2026-06-17 UTC. It is platform implementation guidance, not a promise that every manufacturer provides the same consumer-facing process. If the fix does not match what you see
- Only the status bar looks artificial: look specifically for Show Demo Mode in Developer options. Turning off the whole Developer options menu is a different action.
- The menu is missing or named differently: check your manufacturer’s documentation for your exact Android version; menu placement is not uniform.
- Accounts or settings remain restricted: treat this as possible device management and contact the seller, retailer, or organization that manages the phone rather than repeatedly changing developer settings.
