Android clipboard sync is not a standard feature that works with every phone and PC. For Android-to-Windows copy and paste, Microsoft Phone Link supports only Surface Duo and selected Android devices. If your phone is eligible, enable Cross-device copy and paste in Phone Link; if it is not, the general Phone Link requirements alone will not make clipboard sharing work.
This guide covers Android-to-Windows. Android-to-Android or Android-to-other-platform sharing is a different question: the cited Google and Android documentation covers local clipboard history and file sharing, not a universal shared clipboard.
First, check whether your Android phone supports clipboard sync
Microsoft Phone Link’s Cross-device copy and paste works only with Surface Duo and selected Android devices. Microsoft lists Samsung devices running One UI 2.1 or later, plus selected HONOR, OPPO/OnePlus/realme, ASUS, vivo, and Xiaomi models. Examples on its support page include the Samsung Galaxy Note20 and S21 families, HONOR Magic4 Pro and Magic6 series, ROG Phone 8 models, vivo X Fold3 Pro, and Xiaomi 14T series. These are Microsoft’s listed examples, not a complete or permanent compatibility list. Check Microsoft’s current supported-device information for your model.

Microsoft lists Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11; Android 10 or later; a shared Wi-Fi network; and the same Microsoft account for setup. Meeting those requirements does not mean the phone supports clipboard sharing. Phone Link also does not currently support multiple Android profiles or work/school accounts, according to Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements.

Turn on cross-device copy and paste
The setting that matters is Cross-device copy and paste in Phone Link on the PC. Microsoft describes it as allowing the app to access and transfer copied content. Menu wording or placement can vary with the installed app version, so look in Phone Link’s Settings rather than relying on an older screenshot.
- Confirm Phone Link is connected to your Android phone and that both devices meet the general setup requirements.
- On the PC, open Phone Link, go to Settings, and turn on Cross-device copy and paste.
- Copy a short, plain-text string on one device and try pasting it on the other. Then test in the reverse direction. This is a simple way to distinguish a one-way app or selection issue from a connection problem.
Know what sync does—and what it does not
Phone Link transfers the current clipboard item; it does not combine or preserve clipboard histories. Microsoft explains: “Every time you copy something on either device, what you copy will replace the clipboard content on both of your devices.” The supported content documented by Microsoft is text and images. Images larger than 1 MB are resized, and text formatting may be lost because the source and destination apps can handle copied text differently.

There is also a Secure Folder limitation: content copied from Secure Folder cannot be copied to the PC, even though it replaces the PC’s clipboard contents. If the clipboard seems to change but nothing useful arrives on Windows, check whether the source was Secure Folder.

Wi-Fi and mobile-data settings
Clipboard exchange requires data to pass between the phone and PC. For setup, Microsoft lists a shared Wi-Fi network. If Wi-Fi is unavailable, Link to Windows can use mobile data when its mobile-data sync option is allowed; with that option off, both devices need to be on Wi-Fi. Check the relevant Link to Windows mobile-data settings in Microsoft’s clipboard support guidance if transfers stop away from Wi-Fi or you want to avoid mobile-data use.

- What Can I do if the Bluetooth adapter can not work?: Ensure there are no other Bluetooth devices installed on the computer. If there are, disable all existing Bluetooth devices in "Device Manager", then insert the adapter and try again. (For detailed information please read the user manual)
Large selections and app behavior
If a large copied selection fails, try a smaller text selection. A successful transfer can also look different after pasting: the destination app may not preserve the source formatting, and large images are resized rather than transferred at their original size.
Troubleshoot in a practical order
Microsoft’s suggestions are first-line checks, not guaranteed fixes. Work through them in order so you can isolate a settings, selection, or connection issue:

- Confirm your Android model is on Microsoft’s supported-device list and that Cross-device copy and paste is enabled in Phone Link.
- Try copying a smaller selection, ideally a short plain-text test.
- Close and reopen both Phone Link on the PC and Link to Windows on the Android phone.
- Verify that the Phone Link connection itself is working and check whether your network or mobile-data settings permit the transfer.
- If it still fails, restart the PC as a last resort.
If you meant Android-to-Android, or need saved history
Gboard’s Clipboard is a local clipboard-history feature, not a documented cross-device sync service. Google says clipboard history clears shortly after last use, except for pinned text; open Gboard Clipboard and pin an item if you want to retain it. Turning on Gboard clipboard history alone does not establish syncing between phones or to a PC. See Google’s Gboard clipboard help.
Quick Share is for sending files such as photos, documents, and folders between Android devices and Windows PCs. It can be useful when the content can be saved or shared as a file, but it does not keep a shared clipboard current. Android describes the feature at its Quick Share page.

Do not mistake a preview for general availability
Microsoft’s July 24, 2025 Windows Insider post described a refreshed Link to Windows app that could show recent PC clipboard items in Recent activity. The announcement specified an Insider Preview build, Phone Link 1.25062.83.0 or higher, and Link to Windows Beta 1.25071.155 or higher. Those were prerequisites for that preview announcement; the post does not establish that the feature is generally available to all users now. Details are in Microsoft’s Windows Insider post.
