Android phones do not share one universal video-recording time limit. A recording that stops by itself may be hitting a limit tied to a particular phone or camera mode, running out of available storage, or triggering heat protection. Start by noting how long the video records, which mode and resolution are selected, how much storage is free, and whether the phone is hot or showing a temperature warning.
Why an Android camera may stop recording
Heat protection can turn off the camera
On Pixel phones, Google says the device may limit functions when it senses excessive heat, including turning off the camera. High-definition recording can contribute to warmth; direct sunlight, an enclosed space, or demanding activity while charging can add to it. If the phone feels very hot or displays a temperature warning, stop recording, disconnect it from power if it is plugged in, move it somewhere cooler, and wait for it to cool. Google recommends stopping demanding activity and letting a hot Pixel cool before resuming use. Google’s Pixel heat guidance.

Some phones and modes have recording-time limits
Samsung says certain Galaxy phones limit UHD or 8K recording to 10 minutes to help prevent overheating. Samsung recommends switching to FHD or HD to extend recording time. This is a limit for certain Galaxy high-resolution modes, not a general Android rule; front and rear camera resolution settings may also be separate. Google’s Pixel Video Boost feature has a separate maximum recording time of 10 minutes. Do not assume this limit applies to ordinary Pixel camera videos or other Android phones. Google Pixel Camera Help: Record videos with Video Boost.
Low storage can stop a Video Boost recording
Google says a low-storage warning will stop a Pixel Video Boost recording. Video Boost creates a temporary local file for processing, and its size varies with the scene, resolution, and frame rate; it can use available device storage while processing. How to narrow down the cause
- Note when recording stops. Check whether it stops at roughly the same elapsed time each try. A repeatable 10-minute stop is a reason to inspect the selected mode and phone model—not proof of a universal limit.
- Check the camera mode and resolution. On a Galaxy phone recording in UHD or 8K, try FHD or HD and see whether the recording lasts longer. If you are using Pixel Video Boost, account for its 10-minute maximum.
- Check available device storage. This is especially relevant if a Pixel Video Boost recording shows a low-storage warning. Menu labels and storage-management paths vary by device and Android version.
- Check for heat. If the phone is unusually hot or shows a temperature warning, stop recording, unplug it if necessary, move it to a cooler place, and let it cool before trying again.
- If it still stops, identify the exact setup. Record the phone model, Android version, camera app, selected resolution or special mode, approximate stop time, and available storage. Use the manufacturer’s support for that model rather than assuming a limit applies across Android.

When the available information is not enough
Without the phone model, camera app, recording mode, stop time, and storage status, there is no reliable way to name a single cause. The manufacturer guidance above confirms specific examples for Pixel heat protection, Pixel Video Boost, and certain Galaxy high-resolution modes; it does not establish a universal duration threshold or behavior for other devices. A Google support community volunteer has also suggested freeing space, lowering quality, and restarting, but that is community advice rather than official guidance and may not apply to every camera app. Google Files Help Community discussion.
