There is no single best Android camera preset. The right starting point is your phone’s default Photo mode, then a few deliberate changes for the subject, light, movement, storage and privacy. Camera labels and supported features differ by manufacturer, model and software version, so use the examples below as adaptable settings rather than a universal menu path.

Start with a reliable baseline

Open the camera and begin in the standard Photo mode. Automatic exposure, autofocus and the phone’s normal computational processing are designed to handle the widest range of everyday scenes. Change a control only when the preview or the finished image shows a specific problem.

Choose the full sensor frame when you want maximum composition flexibility

Look for an aspect-ratio control in the viewfinder or camera settings. A full-sensor option records the complete available frame; a wider option crops the top and bottom for a 16:9-looking composition. Google’s Pixel Camera Help uses the labels Full image (4:3) and Wide crop (16:9). Those labels and ratios are Pixel examples, not guaranteed Android-wide names. Use the full image for photographs you may crop later, and choose the wide crop when you already want a cinematic rectangle.

Turn on composition guides if they solve a framing problem

Gridlines, a level or other composition guides can make horizons and vertical lines easier to align. Enable them under the camera’s settings or viewfinder options if you regularly tilt the phone or struggle to place a subject. Samsung documents both a level and a viewfinder grid for Galaxy S26; another phone may use different names or provide only one of them.

Keep the lens and viewfinder clear

Fingerprints and dust can make a sharp image look soft or hazy. Wipe the lens gently with a clean, soft cloth before changing advanced settings. If bright lights create halos or streaks, move the phone slightly or change the angle so the light is not striking the lens directly. Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance identifies direct bright light as a cause of glare, halos and distortion and recommends trying indirect light.

How to change camera settings on an Android phone

Because Android manufacturers design their own camera apps, the exact path is model-specific. A dependable method is:

  1. Open the camera app and select Photo, Video or the specialized mode you need.
  2. Tap the Settings gear, three-dot menu or down-arrow in the viewfinder. On some phones, frequently used controls appear directly above the shutter.
  3. Change one option, return to the viewfinder and take a test frame. This makes it clear which setting affected the result.
  4. Reopen the settings panel when you switch from stills to video; many controls are saved separately for each mode.

Google directs non-Pixel owners to separate camera help, and Samsung notes that features can vary by Galaxy model and software version. Therefore, a Pixel or Galaxy path should be treated as an example, not an instruction that every Android phone will display.

Focus and exposure: make the subject the priority

Tap to focus

When autofocus chooses the background, tap the person, animal or object that matters most. The camera normally places its focus and exposure measurement around that point. A tap is especially useful for a face near a bright window, a close object in front of a distant landscape, or a small subject surrounded by texture.

Use focus and exposure lock when the app provides it

Some camera apps show a lock after you tap and hold a subject. On supported Pixel models, tap the subject and then choose Lock to hold focus and exposure together. This is useful when you want to recompose without the camera jumping to a brighter background or a nearer object. The control is not present on every Pixel generation or other Android phone.

Tracking autofocus helps with movement

If your camera offers subject or tracking autofocus, enable it when a person, pet or vehicle is moving through the frame. Samsung lists tracking autofocus for Galaxy S26. Tracking can lose a subject in poor light, behind an obstruction or when several objects look alike, so keep the subject large enough in the viewfinder and retap if focus drifts.

Adjust exposure only after checking the preview

Automatic exposure is the safest baseline. If a face is too dark against a bright sky, raise exposure slightly after tapping the face; if highlights are blown out, lower it. Make small changes and check bright areas and shadows before shooting. Exposure controls, scales and reset gestures vary, so do not assume that a value shown on one phone maps directly to another.

Best settings for common shooting situations

Situation Starting mode and settings What to watch for
Everyday scenes Photo mode, automatic exposure, full image ratio, tap to focus when needed, optional grid Change settings only when autofocus, framing or brightness is visibly wrong.
Portraits Tap the face or eyes; use focus/exposure lock or tracking if supported; keep the subject separated from a busy background Portrait blur and face processing are model-dependent. Check hair and glasses edges before relying on the effect.
Moving subjects Photo mode with tracking autofocus when available; prioritize a clear focus point over extreme zoom Long low-light exposures can blur movement. Take several frames if the subject is unpredictable.
Night scenes Night mode or Night Sight; stabilize the phone and ask the subject to remain still Moving people, cars or leaves may blur or be rendered differently as the phone combines exposures.
Maximum detail High-resolution mode when supported; use the full image ratio and good light Larger files and slower processing are possible. The control is specialized, not an everyday requirement.
Editing later RAW plus JPEG when supported and when you have an editing workflow RAW files require compatible software, occupy more storage and usually look flat until processed.
Video for easy sharing Use a resolution and format your viewing apps support; Full HD can reduce storage use on Pixel phones Higher resolution, HDR and high-bitrate modes create heavier files and may limit compatibility.

Night photography: the settings that matter most

Use the built-in night mode

Choose Night mode, Night Sight or the equivalent low-light mode when the app offers it. These modes collect information over multiple frames and then combine it, so they need more stability than an ordinary snapshot. Google’s Pixel guidance says Night Sight requires both the subject and camera to remain completely still while the shot is taken.

Stabilize the phone before pressing the shutter

Brace the phone against a solid surface, hold it with both hands and keep it still until the capture animation finishes. A small smartphone tripod or phone mount is optional but useful for buildings, landscapes and any scene where you can wait. A stable table, wall or railing can work just as well if it is safe and does not block the lens.

Understand movement artifacts

Night processing is most predictable with still architecture, furniture and landscapes. A walking person, waving branch or passing vehicle can appear soft, duplicated or differently exposed because parts of the scene moved between frames. For a moving subject, use a normal Photo mode, add available light and take several frames rather than expecting Night mode to freeze action.

Know what the Galaxy-specific figure means

Samsung says Galaxy Night mode combines 30 images into one clear photo. That is Samsung’s description of Galaxy Night mode, not a specification for every Android night camera. Other phones may capture a different number of frames or use a different computational process.

Portraits, people and action

Lock attention on the face

Tap the face or the most important part of the subject before shooting. If the app offers a lock, use it after the focus point is correct so recomposing does not move focus to the background. On supported Pixel devices, the tap-and-Lock workflow holds focus and exposure; availability varies by model.

Choose a shutter strategy for movement

In good light, ordinary Photo mode usually gives the camera enough shutter speed to record a walking person or pet. In dim light, a longer computational exposure can produce blur. Add light, move closer to a brighter area, or accept a little more noise by using the phone’s standard mode. Do not assume that a high-resolution setting will stop motion; detail and motion-freezing are separate goals.

Check portrait effects before sharing

Portrait modes estimate depth and blur a simulated background. Inspect hair, fingers, glasses, thin straps and overlapping objects at full size. If the edge looks artificial, retake the image in ordinary Photo mode so the scene is recorded without a depth effect.

High-resolution photos and RAW: when they are worth using

High resolution is a deliberate choice

Use a high-resolution option when you need to crop a well-lit scene, make a large print or preserve fine texture. It can increase processing time and storage use, and some phones restrict it to a particular lens or lighting level. Google lists 50 MP capture for the Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL on its Pixel guidance. That list does not mean every Android phone offers 50 MP capture.

RAW plus JPEG is for an editing workflow

RAW records less-processed sensor data, while JPEG is ready to view and share. A RAW-plus-JPEG option gives you a convenient file and an editable original when the phone supports it. Choose it for difficult exposure, color or highlight-recovery work; leave it off for routine snapshots if you do not plan to edit. RAW support, file handling and the available lenses differ by model.

Do not confuse megapixels with guaranteed image quality

More pixels can preserve more information in suitable light, but lens quality, focus accuracy, motion, processing and viewing size also determine the result. The available guidance does not establish a universal quality gain or file-size amount for switching to a higher-resolution or RAW mode.

Video settings: balance quality, compatibility and storage

Pick resolution for the destination

Use the highest resolution your intended screen, editor and storage can comfortably handle. If you mainly send clips by messaging or store many hours on the phone, Full HD is a practical choice; Google documents Full HD as a Pixel option for reducing storage use. Higher resolutions are useful when you plan to crop, stabilize or display the finished video on a matching screen.

Use advanced formats only with a compatible workflow

Samsung lists high-efficiency, high-bitrate, HDR, Log and APV video formats for Galaxy S26, along with video stabilization and Auto FPS. These options are not universal Android controls. High-efficiency files may save space but can be less convenient in older editors; Log footage is intended for color grading rather than immediate sharing; high-bitrate recording consumes more storage. Turn on an advanced format only when you know the app or device that will edit and play it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stabilization and Auto FPS have trade-offs

Stabilization can make handheld footage smoother, but aggressive stabilization may crop the frame or behave differently while walking. Auto FPS can adapt capture in low light, potentially changing motion rendering. Record a short test in the location where you will shoot and inspect it on the device that will edit the final video.

Storage and privacy settings to review

Location tags

Camera apps may attach the capture location to a photo’s metadata. Google calls the control Save location; Samsung calls it Location tags on Galaxy S26. Keeping it on helps sort travel photos by place, but sharing the original file can disclose where it was taken. Disable the option in camera controls when location privacy matters, and remember that a social app may create a separate copy with its own metadata behavior.

Space-saving photo formats

Samsung documents HEIF as a space-saving photo format on Galaxy S26. Use it when your sharing and editing apps support HEIF; choose a more widely compatible format if recipients or older software cannot open it. The camera’s format choice affects workflow compatibility as well as storage.

Video storage choices

Resolution, frame rate, HDR and bitrate all influence how quickly storage fills. Review the camera’s remaining-space indicator before a long recording and move completed files to a backed-up location. Because devices use different codecs and compression levels, there is no single Android-wide number of minutes per gigabyte.

A practical setup sequence

  1. Reset your starting point: select Photo mode and the normal automatic processing profile.
  2. Set the frame: choose the full image ratio for maximum cropping flexibility, or a wide crop when that composition is intentional.
  3. Enable guides: turn on a grid or level if it helps keep architecture and horizons straight.
  4. Prepare focus: tap the key subject; activate tracking or focus/exposure lock only when the app supports it and the scene benefits.
  5. Check the light: adjust exposure slightly if the preview loses facial detail or clips bright highlights.
  6. Select a special mode: use Night mode for still low-light scenes, high resolution for a specific detail need, or RAW for planned editing.
  7. Confirm storage and privacy: review location tags, photo format and video resolution before a trip or event.
  8. Take a test frame or clip: zoom in on the result to check focus, motion blur, glare and edge artifacts before the important shot.

Troubleshooting poor results

The image is blurry

  • Clean the lens and retake the frame.
  • Tap the subject so focus is not on the background.
  • For night mode, hold the phone and subject still until capture completes.
  • For moving subjects, use ordinary Photo mode, add light or take several frames.

The photo has glare or halos

  • Inspect the lens for fingerprints or moisture.
  • Change your angle so a lamp or sun is not shining directly into the lens.
  • Use indirect light when possible. Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends changing the angle or avoiding direct bright light for this type of distortion.

The subject is too dark or the sky is washed out

  • Tap the subject that must be correctly exposed.
  • Use the exposure slider in small increments and check the brightest areas.
  • Reframe to reduce an extreme brightness difference, or add light to the subject.

The file will not open or share correctly

  • Check whether the recipient or editor supports HEIF, HDR, Log, APV or another selected format.
  • For broad compatibility, capture or export a standard format supported by the destination.
  • Keep an original copy before converting or stripping metadata.

What “best” means for your phone

The best Android camera settings are the smallest set of changes that solves the current problem: full image ratio and a grid for composition, a tap or lock for focus, Night mode plus physical stability for still darkness, and high-resolution or RAW only for a defined detail or editing need. Confirm each option in your own camera app because Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy examples demonstrate possibilities, not a universal Android interface.

Frequently Asked Questions

What settings should I use for night photos on Android?

Select Night mode or Night Sight when available, keep the phone and subject still through the capture, and use a tripod or stable surface when practical. Night modes are most reliable for stationary scenes; moving subjects can blur or appear differently exposed.

How do I change camera settings on my Android phone?

Open the camera, choose the shooting mode, then tap the gear, three-dot menu or down-arrow in the viewfinder. Change one option at a time and take a test frame. Labels and locations vary by manufacturer, model and software.

Should I always use the highest megapixel setting?

No. High resolution is useful for specific cropping, printing or detail needs when supported, but it can require more storage and processing. Automatic Photo mode is the practical everyday default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I turn on RAW photos?

Use RAW plus JPEG when you intend to edit exposure or color and have compatible software and storage. Leave it off for routine sharing if you do not need the extra editing latitude.
